Book Synopsis Difficult Reading by : Jason R. Marley
Download or read book Difficult Reading written by Jason R. Marley and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Difficult Reading offers a new approach to formal experimentation in Caribbean literature. In this insightful study, Jason Marley demonstrates how the aggressive, antagonistic elements common to the mid-twentieth-century Caribbean novel foster emotional responses that spark new forms of communal resistance against colonial power. Marley illustrates how experimental Caribbean writers repeatedly implicate their readers in colonial domination in ways that are intended to unsettle and discomfort. In works such as Denis Williams’s The Third Temptation, Wilson Harris’s The Secret Ladder, and Vera Bell’s overlooked prose poem Ogog, acts of colonial atrocity—such as the eradication of Indigenous populations in Guyana, the construction of the Panama Canal, or the disenfranchisement of Afro-Jamaican communities—become mired in aesthetic obfuscation, forcing the reader to confront and rethink their own relationship to these events. In this way, new literary forms engender new forms of insight and outrage, fostering a newly inspired relation to resistance.

Book Synopsis Caribbean Literature in Transition, 1920–1970: Volume 2 by : Raphael Dalleo
Download or read book Caribbean Literature in Transition, 1920–1970: Volume 2 written by Raphael Dalleo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years between the 1920s and 1970s are key for the development of Caribbean literature, producing the founding canonical literary texts of the Anglophone Caribbean. This volume features essays by major scholars as well as emerging voices revisiting important moments from that era to open up new perspectives. Caribbean contributions to the Harlem Renaissance, to the Windrush generation publishing in England after World War II, and to the regional reverberations of the Cuban Revolution all feature prominently in this story. At the same time, we uncover lesser known stories of writers publishing in regional newspapers and journals, of pioneering women writers, and of exchanges with Canada and the African continent. From major writers like Derek Walcott, V.S. Naipaul, George Lamming, and Jean Rhys to recently recuperated figures like Eric Walrond, Una Marson, Sylvia Wynter, and Ismith Khan, this volume sets a course for the future study of Caribbean literature.

Book Synopsis Comparative Perspectives on Environmental Policies and Issues by : Robert A. Dibie
Download or read book Comparative Perspectives on Environmental Policies and Issues written by Robert A. Dibie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Perspectives on Environmental Policies and Issues presents tools and concepts about environmental policies in several developed and developing countries. It explores a broad survey of ecological modernization theory, ecological feminism theory, environmental justice theory, the concept of sustainability, and research on environmental policies. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and focus groups, and are used to analyze social, economic, and environmental impact on people. The book specifically discusses how the earth’s basic life-supporting capital (soils, forests, species, fresh water and oceans) is degraded or depleted to provide for human needs, and how air pollution and acid precipitation, are causing widespread injury to humans, forests, and crops. Realistically, over-taxing of natural resources and ecological systems throughout the world has promoted economic growth and created increasing opportunities for people while also advancing social injustice. The use of the environment to accomplish social and economic transformation raises fundamental issues for the study of environmental policy and the natural ecological system. As human beings exploit the natural environment to meet present needs, they often will destroy resources needed for the future generations. Thus, environmental policies are enacted to ensure that social and economic impacts of the environment are compatible with the limits of natural systems. Offering an intuitive and crystal-clear explanation of the key concepts and principles of environmental policies and sustainable development, this volume is suitable not only for environmental science students, but also for instructors, practitioners, researchers, and academics.

Book Synopsis Race, Sexuality and Identity in Britain and Jamaica by : Gemma Romain
Download or read book Race, Sexuality and Identity in Britain and Jamaica written by Gemma Romain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of the extraordinary, but ordinary life of, Patrick Nelson. His experiences touched on some of the most important and intriguing historical themes of the twentieth century. He was a black migrant to interwar Britain; an aristocrat's valet in rural Wales; a Black queer man in 1930s London; an artist's model; a law student, a recruit to the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps and Prisoner of War during the Second World War. Through his return to Jamaica after the war and his re-migrations to London in the late 1940s and the early 1960s, he was also witness to post-war Jamaican struggles and the independence movement as well as the development of London's post-war multi-ethnic migrations. Drawing on a range of archival materials including letters sent to individuals such as Bloomsbury group artist Duncan Grant (his former boyfriend and life-long friend), as well as paintings and newspaper articles, Gemma Romain explores the intersections of these diverse aspects of Nelson's life and demonstrates how such marginalized histories shed light on our understanding of broader historical themes such as Black LGBTQ history, Black British history in relation to the London artworld, the history of the Second World War, and histories of racism, colonialism and empire.
Book Synopsis Inside Jamaican Schools by : Hyacinth L. Evans

Book excerpt: Students and teachers of education in the Caribbean have long relied on ethnographic research from North America to enrich their understanding of life in schools and classrooms. Based on actual experiences from the perspectives of both students and teachers, this collection of ethnographic research articles provides the first up-close view of Jamaican schools and classrooms. Hyacinth Evans and her research team used careful, well-executed interviews and participant observation methods. The result is an insightful view of the ways society's tensions are played out in educational settings, the ways personalities are shaped and identities formed in face-to-face interactions, and the ways circumstances and experiences in the Jamaican setting affect teaching and learning. The articles examine - Student-teacher interaction - Teacher authority - how it is maintained, nurtured, or eroded - The social construction of student interest and attention versus disruptiveness and apathy - Consequences of streaming children in perceived ability groups - Standard Jamaican English (SJE) methods and their effectiveness in teaching Creole-speaking students - Teaching and learning in schools where mater
Book Synopsis Decolonising Lifelong Learning in the Age of Transnational Migration by : Shibao Guo
Download or read book Decolonising Lifelong Learning in the Age of Transnational Migration written by Shibao Guo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decolonising Lifelong Learning in the Age of Transnational Migration examines how colonialism has shaped migration and migrants’ transnational learning experiences. With the development of modern transportation and advanced communication technologies, migration has shifted from international to transnational, characterised by the multiple and circular migration across transnational spaces of migrants who maintain close contact with their country of origin. The book interrogates the colonial assumptions and Eurocentric tendencies influencing the current ideological moorings of lifelong learning theories, policies, and practices in the age of transnational migration. It calls for an approach to lifelong learning that aims to decolonise the ideological underpinnings of colonial relations of rule, especially in terms of its racialised privileging of ‘whiteness’ and Eurocentrism as normative processes of knowledge accumulation. This volume cover a wide range of topics, including: • Theorising decolonisation in lifelong learning and transnational migration • Decolonising racism, sexism, and settler colonialism • Decolonising knowledge production and recognition • Decolonising the life course • Decolonising lifelong learning policies • Decolonising pedagogic and curricular approaches to lifelong learning Overall, the chapters represent the collective efforts of the contributors in attempting to decolonise lifelong learning in the age of transnational migration. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Lifelong Education.
