The book offers an account by studying the problem in connection with its five important agent, viz. the family, the church, the school, the state and the industry. The title `Jaina System of Education` that the book bears might be more appropriately replaced by `Educational Systems found in Jaina Literature` inasmuch as the Brahmanical the secular and the vocational education have also been dealt with. It is a historical fact that there were no watertight compartments in India separating Jainism Buddhism and other cognare schemes of life and caltgion. They all contributed harmoniously towards the development of culture as whole. Necessarily the contributions of these several systems in the field of education were inseparably mixed up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has a rich tradition of learning and education from the time immemorial. These were handed over generation to generation either through oral or written media. The basic characteristics of Ancient or Hindu civilization is that it has been moulded and shaped the course of its history more by religious than by political or economic influences. The Early Educational System in India was based on the conception of Brahmacharya, which laid greater emphasis on carya than mere learning. The system was established on the tie of constant association between the teacher and the taught. The Sanskrit word for pupil was antevasin, while acarya stood for the preceptor. A student was known by the word Brahmachari. The religious student belonging to the caste of Brahmana, Kshatriya or Vaisya was known by the term Varni. As a pupil, he was known as Chatra because his duty was always to be at his teacher's service and to protect him from any harm just like an umbrella. The antevasin was to lead the life of a regular Brahmacharin in the house of his teacher. Special hostels for female students had also come into existence known as Chatrisala i.e., Lady's Hostel.

However, these sumptuous streams of education later fell into a period of ignorance and disrepair. The country’s education system lost its credibility, and was seen as inferior to the European systems. This book describes the magnificence of the history of education in India during the Vedic, Jain, Buddha, and Islamic periods, and during colonial British rule and the post-Independence era.

The author has tried to put the essence of Jaina religion and philosophy in a very clear way so that any student of religion or philosophy can easily trace out Jainism with a view of history, cosmology and cosmography. The three heterodox sects react against the ritualistic creed of the Vedists. The cult of Ajivikas was founded by Makkhali Gosal, the contemporary of Mahavira Vardhamana, on the basis of strict determinism with a belief in the all-embracing rule of Niyati (principle of order). According to Gosal, It was Niyati which ultimately governed our action, controlled phenomena and left no room for human volition. It will through new height on an interesting and significant aspect of India's past, and will encourage further research. This book is divided into fifteen chapters discussing elaborately different aspects of the subject matter. The comprehensive Bibliography and Index are the added features for the researchers for comparative as well as further study of yet unexplored areas.

Yet it is one of the least known, largely because its scriptures have remained less known than those of the other world religions. The present book is the first and only comprehensive and detailed description of the entire canonical literature of the Jainas, both extant and not extant. The author was unusually qualified for the task, having spent over a decade cataloging Jaina manuscripts in the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. It includes two copious indices, one of authors and one of titles. It is an indispensable reference work for serious students of religion.
