Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jadeite Objets d’Art Indeed the last great aesthetic discovery of the Emporer Qianlong, reigning from 1736 to 1796, hidden high amid the impenetrable forested hills of remotest Myanmar. Only decades later in 1863 would the French mineralogist Alexis Damour name the stone jadeite. This stone emerged in interesting times, an artistic golden age. The historical carvings of China for nearly seven millennia had given way to a new era. By 1880 impressionism, though disdained early in its day, was well entrenched within the artistic milieu. Affluent British, Americans and to a lesser extent the continental Europeans, the commercial class if you will, demanded new ideas and ornate objects, looking to decoration as a mark at once of quality and change. With centuries of training and skills in the arts and crafts, Chinese artisans developed a unique design and style, in effect an infrastructure, that aesthetically captured the romance and mystery of the orient, and comfortably served as the backdrop for c! arved flowers and dragons alike in rare and important jadeite carvings - carvings of both cabochons and cabinet pieces. The best of both were frequently glorified in opulent settings and homes of the affluent, a fashion trend that continued for decades, concentrated as to its high season from 1900 to 1920, yet ranging from perhaps as early as 1880 to 1940, arguably ending with the all consuming world war. Winds of change were blowing and by 1950 modernism had arrived and with that age the recent past and its relics migrated to the nations’ attics and archives, at least under the best of circumstances. And like those with even the sincerest of intentions and with the greatest respect for the past, the modernists had their respective new era lives to lead. Records lost, writings long since misplaced, carvings cautiously placed in overcrowded musty Victorian attics. And so for decades, the light has been dimly lit, perhaps as Qianlong would have wanted it, yet history has a way! of locating those pilgrims of the past who in retrospect offered a vibrant message and timeless imagery. Jadeite Objets d’Art brings to light an impressive quantity of information on the stone as well as an in-depth analysis of the epic works from the early, middle and late periods these works of art flourished. It features in vivid color many works that have never been published and focuses on seminal carvings, many of which have rarely been seen. No single publication, coupled with an extensive array of images of jadeite carvings, has heretofore concentrated solely on this dramatic and mysterious stone. Significant archival and original records have been carefully and thoroughly researched. Additionally the reader will find critical information on the stone and related data including an historical perspective, mineralization, commercialization and evaluation considerations as well as a cataloged listing of objects from an extensive and important collection and a discussion of certain of the techniques utilized by master artisans of these carvings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olmec Art at Dumbarton Oaks presents the Olmec portion of the Robert Woods Bliss Collection of Pre-Columbian Art. It illustrates all thirty-nine Olmec art objects in color plates and includes many complementary and comparative black-and-white illustrations and drawings. The body of Pre-Columbian art that Robert Bliss carefully assembled over a half-century between 1912 and 1963, amplified only slightly since his death, is a remarkably significant collection. In addition to their aesthetic quality and artistic significance, the objects hold much information regarding the social worlds and religious and symbolic views of the people who made and used them before the arrival of Europeans in the New World. This volume is the second in a series of catalogues that will treat objects in the Bliss Pre-Columbian Collection. The majority of the Olmec objects in the collection are made of jade, the most precious material for the peoples of ancient Mesoamerica from early times through the sixteenth century. Various items such as masks, statuettes, jewelry, and replicas of weapons and tools were used for ceremonial purposes and served as offerings. Karl Taube brings his expertise on the lifeways and beliefs of ancient Mesoamerican peoples to his study of the Olmec objects in teh Bliss collection. His understanding of jade covers a broad range of knowledge from chemical compositions to geological sources to craft technology to the symbolic power of the green stone. Throughout the book the author emphasizes the role of jade as a powerful symbol of water, fertility, and particularly, of the maize plant which was the fundamental source of life and sustenance for the Olmec. The shiny green of the stone was analogous to the green growth of maize. This fundamental concept was elaborated in specific religious beliefs, many of which were continued and elaborated by later Mesoamerican peoples, such as the Maya. Karl Taube employs his substantial knowledge of Pre-Columbian cultures to explore and explicate Olmec symbolism in this catalogue.

Stan Leaming, Canada's leading jade geologist, was fascinated by this unusual gem; he is credited with pioneering the emergence of the jade industry in British Columbia. Leaming shares his unique insight into the science and magic of jade in this passionate exploration of the green stone's development from prehistoric tool to objet d'art. The reader is invited along with Leaming, a fascinating subject in himself, on a trip around the world as he hunts for the stone of heaven throughout BC and Canada, the United States, Mexico, Europe, Siberia, China, and even Down Under, where black jade is found. This book examines jade's appeal as a global industry, a divine inspiration, a medium for artistic expression and even as a precipitator of some bizarre crimes. Rockhounds casual and serious will appreciate this comprehensive celebration of jade, enhanced with maps and photographs. The 16-page colour section includes photos of jade art by Lyle Sopel, Deborah Wilson and other incredible sculptors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geochemical methods of prospecting for and evaluation of minerals are applied widely today at all stages of geological exploration. However, geochemical methods of prospecting for many classes of non-metallic minerals have not been elaborated. This book is a completely revised, updated and expanded edition of the publication by the same authors, which was published in 1987. The contains a collection the latest data on geochemical prospecting for non-metals, which is valuable in view of the anticipated increase of consumption and utilization of non-metallic minerals in the future. The information on various types of raw material is presented in the following sequence: 1) general data (genetic types, conditions of formation, geological prospecting indications); 2) indicator minerals and elements; 3) geochemical methods of prospecting along dispersion trains and haloes, plus hydrogeochemical and geobotanical methods; 4) primary endogenic haloes; 5) vertical geochemical zonality; 6) methods, stages and sequence of work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gemstones is the first attempt in English to bring together the geological, mineralogical and gemmological developments that have taken place during the last thirty years. Though there have been many gemstone books published in that time, most have been concerned, understandably and rightly, with the science of gem testing and have covered that area very well. Details of the geological occurrence of many of the classic gemstones, and of nearly all those which have only recently been discovered, have been less adequately dealt with. Coverage has been restricted to a number of papers in a wide variety of geological and mineralogical journals. Gemstones hopes to get the balance right. In the preparation of the book all the journals and monographs in the field have been consulted so that the book should stand for some years as the authority to which gemmologists and others turn in the first instance. Ease of reference and depth of coverage make Gemstones both a reference book and a bench book. Acknow ledgements I am grateful to Brian Jackson of the Department of Geology, Royal Museums of Scotland who read the manuscript and painstakingly indicated places where amendment or alteration was needed. I am also grateful to the publishers of the books on which the line illustrations are based. The colour plates present in the book derive from a number of sources, which I would like to acknowledge as follows. Plates 1, 4-15 and 17 Crown copyright reserved.
