It will be noticed that in the following pages the writer frequently follows the diction of Hakluyt, though not closely enough to require special acknowledgement. Those parts of the narrative which are placed in quotation marks are the writer's own translations' as literal as he can make them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacques Cartier, His Life and Voyages In thus enlarging the number of his judges, the writer ventures to express the hope that the same kindly criticism which he has so far met with, may attend him in the wider field. Whatever of imperfection there may be in his work, he can at least honestly say, that his earnest endeavour has been to set out in plain and truthful language the facts connected with the earliest dawn of Canadian history, and to give an accurate and faithful picture of the central figure in the scene. To that end the original records have been diligently studied and compared, and the most trivial statements of fact, whenever practicable, carefully verified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mariner of St. Malo: A Chronicle of the Voyages, of Jacques Cartier How like or unlike the features of Cartier this picture in the town hall may be, we have no means of telling. Painted probably in 1839, it has hung there for more than seventy years, and the record of the earlier prints or drawings from which its artist drew his inspiration no longer survives. We know, indeed, that an ancient map of the eastern coast of America, made some ten years after the first of Cartier's voyages, has pictured upon it a group of figures that represent the landing of the navigator and his followers among the Indians of Gaspe. It was the fashion of the time to attempt by such decorations to make maps vivid. Demons, deities, mythological figures and naked savages disported themselves along the borders of the maps and helped to decorate unexplored spaces of earth and ocean. Of this sort is the illustration on the map in question. But it is generally agreed that we have no right to identify Cartier with any of the figures in the scene, although the group as a whole undoubtedly typifies his landing upon the seacoast of Canada. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacques Cartier and His Four Voyages to Canada: An Essay, With Historical, Explanatory and Philological Notes It is with the third mentioned of these composi tions that I have now to deal, and I will briefly draw attention to the salient points of the essay in question. Mr. Stephens himself, in a few prefatory words, informs us that its motif, if it may be so called, has been to give all the facts concerning Jacques Cartier known up to the present time and he believes that his pages contain everything of value now known about Cartier. First, then, an account is given of the brave explorer's life, of which, as we are all aware, not much can now be ascertained, apart from what we learn from the Voyages. Next, Mr. Stephens has translated from the original French. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cartier: Sails the St. Lawrence By logbooks we mean the original narratives which were written from Cartier's own records of his voyages. It is believed that parts of the original narratives were written by Cartier, and other parts by a person, unknown to us today, who based his text on Cartier's logbooks. To simplify matters, these narratives are referred to in our story as the logbooks of Cartier. Like real detectives, modern historians have searched the European libraries, the town records, and the old secret papers of the kings for scraps of information which have contributed greatly to our understanding of these voyages. We are especially indebted to the research work of Dr. H. P. Biggar, a Canadian historian, who has written two books which we have used as source material through the courtesy of his publishers, the Public Archives of Canada. The first of these books is The Voyages of jacques Cartier, published with translations and notes; the sec ond, A Collection of Documents Relating to j'acques Cartier and the S iear de Roberval, from which we have gathered many of the facts in our chapter on the Portuguese spy, the King of France, and the Emperor of Spain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anticipations of Cartier's Voyages, 1492-1534 When Balboa, twenty years after Columbus's discovery, made, it more palpable that south of the Isthmus of Panama there was a substantial barrier to western progress, and when ten years later Magellan pierced this southern barrier at its Antarctic extremity, it still remained a problem to find out the true character of the northern barrier to western progress, and to find a place to enter the land along a northern parallel far enough to reach the historic India. Inside each of us lives an explorer who yearns to visit the great unknown. Feed the adventurer in you with Origins of a Journey, more than 120 stories of history’s most famous travellers and their finest adventures. These are the tales behind the history’s bravest pioneers, bringing you from the ocean’s black depths to the top of Mount Everest. Harriet Tubman ferries fugitive slaves along the Underground Railroad—not once, not twice, but 19 times. Teddy Roosevelt risks life, limb, and sanity as he charts the Amazon’s River of Doubt. Buoyed by the voice of God, Joan of Arc travels to Vaucouleurs to petition Charles for a chance to fight for France. Charles Darwin notices several different finch species while touring the Galápagos Islands, fundamentally changing how we understand life. Spanning from 500 BC to today, Origins of a Journey teaches us that there is always value in an adventure, no matter how small—or doomed—it may be.
