Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jacob's Room is Virginia Woolf's experimental third novel, set in England as the country moves inex- orably toward the outbreak of World War I. The text reprinted in this Norton Critical Edition is the first British edition produced by the Woolfs at the Hogarth Press, with the original layout and paragraph spacing." "A generous Contexts section provides extracts from Woolf's diaries and letters as well as comments on the novel from her fellow writers and friends, among them E. M. Forster and T. S. Eliot. Three of Woolf's short stories - "The Mark on the Wall," "Kew Gardens," and "An Unwritten Novel" - are included, allowing readers to trace Woolf's experimentation with the new narrative method she used in Jacob's Room. A fourth short story, "A Woman's College from Outside," was originally intended by Woolf to be Chapter 10 of Jacob's Room and is therefore also reprinted in this volume. Finally, Woolf's classic essay "Modern Novels" provides insight into her literary aesthetic and technique." ""Criticism" is divided into two sections. The first, "Contemporary Reception and Reviews," collects personal responses to Jacob's Room from Lytton Strachey and E. M. Forster as well as eleven reviews from contemporary periodicals. The second, "Critical Essays," offers insightful interpretations by Judy Little, Alex Zwerdling, Kate Flint, Kathleen Wall, and Edward L. Bishop. A Selected Bibliography is also included."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "No plainer manifestation of the modernist trend in contemporary English fiction may be found than in Virginia Woolf's Jacob's Room"-The New York Times "I have seldom read a cleverer book...it is exquisitely written, but the characters do not vitally survive in the mind because the author has been obsessed by details of originality and cleverness."-Arnold Bennett Virginia Woolf's third novel, Jacob's Room (1922), is a penetrating look at one man's life from childhood until his untimely death in the first World War. On the surface, this could be considered an anti-war novel, yet it is a wildly inventive experimental work that dispels traditional forms of narration. The nebulous central character, Jacob Flanders, is strangely is absent from the novel, yet the spaces he traversed are not. In telling the story of Jacob through the perspective of the characters he encountered through his short life, Woolf has created an exceptional contemplation of memory, time, and identity. Subverting the bildungsroman genre, Jacob's Room recounts a short and unsettled life through related incidents, fleeting impression, and delirious stream-of-conscience passages. Through an almost cinematic lens, glimpses of Jacob's early life are recollected through his mother; the idyllic time spent with her children and her uneasy experiences living a widower's life. Through other voices, Jacob arrives at Cambridge, where he is able to socially integrate despite his humble upbringings. After graduating, he leaves for London, where he interacts with a wide range of individuals, both impoverished and from the wealthy class; yet he never fully connects to a meaningful human relationship. Jacob, questioning whether he is a failure, decides to leave London and travels to Greece. Fortunes abroad turn precarious, and he returns to London only to be sent off to the war, where he is killed in action. As E.M. Forester remarked at the publication of Jacob's Room, "A new type of fiction has swum into view." Woolf has created a transformative reading experience conveying the emptiness of one individual's life by leaving out the traditional elements of plot and character, yet she manages to question the ways we fail to see each other as we actually are. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Jacob's Room is both modern and readable.

It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, after many years, back in print. This is a new and freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: John kept trotting up and slapping down in her lap grass or dead leaves which he called 'tea, ' and she arranged them methodically but absent-mindedly, laying the flowery heads of the grasses together, thinking how Archer had been awake again last night; the church clock was ten or thirteen minutes fast; she wished she could buy Garfit's acre. ...Flanders could have asked to do such a thing, and the elder boys were getting beyond her, and must be got ready for school, and it was more than most clergymen would have done, coming round after tea, or having them in his own room -as he could fit it in-for the parish was a very large one, and Mr. ...Floyd's letter again, and her breast went up and down when she came to the word 'love, ' but not so fast this time, for she saw Johnny chasing the geese, and knew that it was impossible for her to marry any one-let alone Mr. ...Floyd spoke about the King's Navy (to which Archer was going); and about Rugby (to which Jacob was going); and next day he received a silver salver and went-first to Sheffield, where he met Miss Wimbush, who was on a visit to her uncle, then to Hackney-then to Maresfield House, of which he became the principal, and finally, becoming editor of a well-known series of Ecclesiastical Biographies, he retired to Hampstead with his wife and daughter, and is often to be seen feeding the ducks on Leg of Mutton Pond. ...Jarvis was just the sort of woman to lose her faith upon the moors-to confound her God with the universal that is-but she did not lose her faith, did not leave her husband, never read her poem through, and went on walking the moors, looking at the moon behind the elm trees, and feeling as she sat on the grass high above Scarborough... Yes, yes, when the lark soars; when the sheep, moving a step or two onwards, crop the turf, and at the same time set their bells tinkling; when the breeze first blows, then dies down, leaving the cheek kissed; when the ships on the sea below seem to cross each other and pass on as if drawn by an invisible hand; when there are distant concussions in the air and phantom horsemen galloping, ceasing; when the horizon swims blue, green, emotional-then Mrs.

Book excerpt: Jacob's Room is the third novel by Virginia Woolf, first published on 26 October 1922.The novel centres, in a very ambiguous way, around the life story of the protagonist Jacob Flanders and is presented almost entirely through the impressions other characters have of Jacob. Thus, although it could be said that the book is primarily a character study and has little in the way of plot or background, the narrative is constructed with a void in place of the central character if, indeed, the novel can be said to have a 'protagonist' in conventional terms.

Book excerpt: Jacob's Room is Virginia Woolf's first truly experimental novel. It is a portrait of a young man, who is both representative and victim of the social values which led Edwardian society into war. Jacob's life is traced from the time he is a small boy playing on the beach, through his years in Cambridge, then in artistic London, and finally making a trip to Greece, but this is no orthodox Bildungsroman. Jacob is presented in glimpses, in fragments, as Woolf breaks down traditional ways of representing character and experience. The novel's composition coincided with the consolidation of Woolf's interest in feminism, and she criticizes the privilege thoughtless smugness of patriarchy, the other side', the men in clubs and Cabinets'. Her stylistic innovations are conscious attempts to realize and develop women's writing and the novel dramatizes her interest in the ways both language and social environments shape differently the lives of men and women.

Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf's playful exploration of a satirical »Oxbridge« became one of the world's most groundbreaking writings on women, writing, fiction, and gender. A Room of One's Own [1929] can be read as one or as six different essays, narrated from an intimate first-person perspective. Actual history blends with narrative and memoir. But perhaps most revolutionary was its address: the book is written by a woman for women. Male readers are compelled to read through women's eyes in a total inversion of the traditional male gaze. VIRGINIA WOOLF [1882–1941] was an English author. With novels like Jacob’s Room [1922], Mrs Dalloway [1925], To the Lighthouse [1927], and Orlando [1928], she became a leading figure of modernism and is considered one of the most important English-language authors of the 20th century. As a thinker, with essays like A Room of One’s Own [1929], Woolf has influenced the women’s movement in many countries.

Jacob is described to us, but in such indirect terms that it would seem better to view him as an amalgam of the different perceptions of the characters and narrator. He does not exist as a concrete reality, but rather as a collection of memories and sensations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meyer Son: A Novel No one ever knew just how early was Jacob Strauss' advent. Once a wag of the younger branch of the service declared his belief that Jacob slept in some unknown corner of the apartments, but he had been crushed by the old man who bitterly resented even the implication of such an indignity to the firm. Jacob came with quiet tread into the private office of Nathan Meyer this morning and with more than his customary keen search of vision. From under his shaggy eyebrows his bright eyes glanced seemingly at every object in the room. They used to say that Jacob took a mental inventory of every separate thing, great or small, in the private office of his beloved chief. He would know if a single book were out of place.
