Book excerpt: Marilyn Kallet's The Love That Moves Me is a collection of love poems inspired by Dante's Inferno, as well as by Rimbaud's relationship with Verlaine, and by Orpheus and Euridice. These days Beatrice and Dante find themselves in France, Indiana, and in East Tennessee, bickering at Nascar. Love is the unifying factor, song is the vehicle, descent is a constant, with re-emergence thankfully part of the narrative. Surrealist humor abounds as Benjamin Péret bursts some Romantic bubbles with his exclamations. This is a sensual and resonant collection offering hints of heaven in the love lyrics, touching upon a range of emotions and forms, from traditional pantoums to experimental verse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II, Houston has become a burgeoning, internationally connected metropolis—and a sprawling, car-dependent city. In 1950, it possessed only one highway, the Gulf Freeway, which ran between Houston and Galveston. Today, Houston and Harris County have more than 1,200 miles of highways, and a third major loop is under construction nearly thirty miles out from the historic core. Highways have driven every aspect of Houston's postwar development, from the physical layout of the city to the political process that has transformed both the transportation network and the balance of power between governing elites and ordinary citizens. Power Moves examines debates around the planning, construction, and use of highway and public transportation systems in Houston. Kyle Shelton shows how Houstonians helped shape the city's growth by attending city council meetings, writing letters to the highway commission, and protesting the destruction of homes to make way for freeways, which happened in both affluent and low-income neighborhoods. He demonstrates that these assertions of what he terms "infrastructural citizenship" opened up the transportation decision-making process to meaningful input from the public and gave many previously marginalized citizens a more powerful voice in civic affairs. Power Moves also reveals the long-lasting results of choosing highway and auto-based infrastructure over other transit options and the resulting challenges that Houstonians currently face as they grapple with how best to move forward from the consequences and opportunities created by past choices.

Book excerpt: It is shocking that although just one per cent of children are taken into care by local authorities, almost 30 per cent of prisoners have been in care. Ben Ashcroft’s heart-rending account of abandonment, loneliness and rejection in family life, the care system and beyond begins at age nine and ends with him turning his life around after being moved from pillar to post, crime, drugs, ‘going missing’ and custody. Ten years on, he works to motivate young people from similar backgrounds to believe that they can do the same; that whatever life throws at them they should “Never, ever, give up”. It is also a warning to parents, professionals and carers alike: to listen to what young people have to say, to make time for and reassure them and to recognise the often small but important things that make a difference in the bewildering world of growing-up. ‘Challenges the core concepts we have as members of society, or indeed as child care professionals’: Dr Peter McParlin (from the Foreword). The book was described as inspirational, powerful, emotional, compelling and required reading for anyone interested in the care system when released on Kindle, e.g. ‘An inspiring and moving account of the trauma and distress caused to a young boy by his family and our care system’: Sarah ‘A very raw book but this only adds to the sense of passion and honesty with which it is written’: Fiona Sorsby, Bingley, West Yorkshire. ‘This motivational read is such a hard hitting tale it’s heartfelt and gives such a clear first-hand account of life living in a care home A brilliant worthwhile read about a man who truly turned his life around’: Stacey Spencer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. G. Sebald meets Maggie Nelson in an autobiographical narrative of embodiment, visual art, history, and loss. How do the bodies we inhabit affect our relationship with art? How does art affect our relationship to our bodies? T Fleischmann uses Felix Gonzáles-Torres’s artworks—piles of candy, stacks of paper, puzzles—as a path through questions of love and loss, violence and rejuvenation, gender and sexuality. From the back porches of Buffalo, to the galleries of New York and L.A., to farmhouses of rural Tennessee, the artworks act as still points, sites for reflection situated in lived experience. Fleischmann combines serious engagement with warmth and clarity of prose, reveling in the experiences and pleasures of art and the body, identity and community.

Book excerpt: The heart-stopping third installment in the New York Times bestselling Shatter Me series, which Ransom Riggs, author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Hollow City, called "a thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love." With Omega Point destroyed, Juliette doesn't know if the rebels, her friends, or even Adam are alive. But that won't keep her from trying to take down The Reestablishment once and for all. Now she must rely on Warner, the handsome commander of Sector 45. The one person she never thought she could trust. The same person who saved her life. He promises to help Juliette master her powers and save their dying world . . . but that's not all he wants with her. The Shatter Me series is perfect for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalizing romance like Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu. Tahereh Mafi has created a captivating and original story that combines the best of dystopian and paranormal and was praised by Publishers Weekly as "a gripping read from an author who's not afraid to take risks." Don’t miss Defy Me, the shocking fifth book in the Shatter Me series!
