Book excerpt: What does it mean to be masculine? These eleven men thought they knew, following in the footsteps of their fathers, marching to society’s drumbeat of manhood: A man is strong. A man doesn’t cry. A man is the provider. A man does it alone... in the course of their lives, each of these very different men found this same rigid idea of manhood standing between them and their happiness. Standing between them and being a fully realized man. Standing between them and their relationships. Standing between them and their heart’s path. Instead of building them up and making them stronger, they found themselves chained and isolated by these standards of masculinity. In these soulful interviews conducted by intuitive healer and author Alyssa Ditch, these eleven men candidly share their ascent into becoming real men: from heartache to healing, failure to triumph. Join her, as she dives into the hearts of these eleven brave men to understand how these fully-realized men had cast away society’s limitations on ‘masculinity’, rising to become better men for themselves, their families, and their communities. Learn the tools and techniques that worked for each of them on their journey to self-discovery. Be inspired by the example they set for all men, as it makes us think anew... ‘What is healthy masculinity?’
Download or read book Four Screenplays written by Syd Field and published by Delta. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, you can write a great screenplay. Let Syd Field show you how. “I based Like Water for Chocolate on what I learned in Syd's books. Before, I always felt structure imprisoned me, but what I learned was structure really freed me to focus on the story.”—Laura Esquivel Technology is transforming the art and craft of screenwriting. How does the writer find new ways to tell a story with pictures, to create a truly outstanding film? Syd Field shows what works, why, and how in four extraordinary films: Thelma & Louise, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Silence of the Lambs, and Dances with Wolves. Learn how: Callie Khouri, in her first movie script, Thelma & Louise, rewrote the rules for good road movies and played against type to create a new American classic. James Cameron, writer/director of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, created a sequel integrating spectacular special effects and a story line that transformed the Terminator, the quintessential killing machine, into a sympathetic character. This is how an action film is written. Ted Tally adapted Thomas Harris's chilling 350-page novel, The Silence of the Lambs, into a riveting 120-page script—a lesson in the art and craft of adapting novels into film. Michael Blake, author of Dances with Wolves, achieved every writer's dream as he translated his novel into an uncompromising film. Learn how he used transformation as a spiritual dynamic in this work of mythic sweep. Informative and utterly engrossing, Four Screenplays belongs in every writer's library, next to Syn Field's highly acclaimed companion volumes, Screenplay, The Screenwriter's Workbook, and Selling a Screenplay. “If I were writing screenplays . . . I would carry Syd Field around in my back pocket wherever I went.”—Steven Bochco, writer/producer/director, L.A. Law, Hill Street Blues

Download or read book Evidence written by Arthur Best and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-15 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a tested selection of interesting modern cases that help students learn the rules, recognize difficult issues of application, examine the policy choices inherent in the rules, and build their case-reading and analytical skills, Evidence: Practice, Problems and Rules, Fourth Edition is focused on preparing students for bar passage and law practice. Concise notes, relatively few in number, maximize the likelihood that students will engage with them. Examples of provocative minority approaches frame the Federal Rules choices. Essay-style problems and multiple-choice questions are presented throughout, with suggested analyses for every problem provided in the Teachers Manual. New to the 4th Edition: • Covers recent changes to the Federal Rules residual hearsay exception and the trend towards strengthened judicial control over admissibility of expert opinion that may have only weak support. • United States v. Gallagher (4th Cir. 2024), offering a modern illustration of out-of-court words that are not hearsay because they are introduced to show their effect on a person who reads them. • Shellman v. State (Georgia 2024), which applies a state’s residual exception in conjunction with a state precedent allowing consideration of how the statement is consistent with other evidence in the case. • United States v. Huskey (4th Cir. 2024), which examines weak corroboration as a basis for rejecting admissibility under the residual exception. • Reflects Rules amendments, effective in December 2024, related to extrinsic evidence of prior inconsistent statements, treatment of a predecessor-in-interest’s statements as an opponent’s statement when offered against a successor-in-interest, and broadening the corroborating circumstances a court must consider in applying the hearsay exception for statements against penal interest. Professors and student will benefit from: • Clear organization. • Straightforward introduction to each section and case. • Modern interesting cases that reinforce reading and analytical skills; remembering the rules; recognizing difficult issues of application; examining the policy choices inherent in the rules. • Concise notes; relatively few in number; maximize the likelihood that students will engage with them. • Examples of provocative minority approaches to frame the Federal Rules choices.

Book Synopsis The End of the Road by : Alasdair Fotheringham
Download or read book The End of the Road written by Alasdair Fotheringham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first detailed account of the Festina affair, which ripped apart the 1998 Tour de France and irrevocably changed cycling. The Tour de France is always one of the sporting calendar's most spectacular and dramatic events. But the 1998 Tour provided drama like no other. As the opening stages in Ireland unfolded, the Festina team's soigneur Willy Voet was arrested on the French–Belgian border with a car-load of drugs. Raid after police raid followed, with arrest after arrest hammering the Tour. In protest, there were riders' strikes and go-slows, with several squads withdrawing en masse and one expelled. By the time the Tour reached Paris, just 96 of the 189 starters remained. And of those 189 starters, more than a quarter were later reported to have doped. The 1998 'Tour de Farce's' status as one of the most scandal-struck sporting events in history was confirmed. Voet's arrest was just the beginning of sport's biggest mass doping controversy – what became known as the Festina affair. It all but destroyed professional cycling as the credibility of the entire sport was called into question and the cycling family began to split apart. And yet, ironically, the 1998 Tour was also one of the best races in years. The End of the Road is the first English-language book to provide in-depth analysis and a colourful evocation of the tumultuous events during the 1998 Tour. Alasdair Fotheringham uncovers, step by step, how the world's biggest bike race sank into a nightmarish series of scandals that left the sport on its knees. He explores its long-term consequences – and what lessons, if any, were learned.

Download or read book Skinflick written by Joseph Hansen and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DAVE BRANDSTETTER Death claims investigator Dave Brandstetter navigates the opposing realms of evangelical Christianity and the porn business while tracking a lost girl in late 1970s Los Angeles. Lon Tooker certainly fits the profile: big, strong, a Marine Corps veteran, and recently the target of evangelical crusader Gerald Dawson’s wrath. Tooker’s adult toys and pornography store on the local skid row has recently become the target of Dawson’s church men’s group and their destructive masked raids on “un-Christian” businesses. When Dawson is strangled to death by someone of Tooker’s size and ability, the police see a smut-peddler with a motive. Case closed. But death claims investigator Dave Brandstetter doesn’t like it. By all accounts Tooker is a softy incapable of such a crime. Actual evidence is nonexistent and assumptions many. And Dave particularly doesn’t care for assumptions based on someone’s sex life. But Dave is also navigating new personal territory. His father’s death has left him bereaved and for the first time in a long time without a job. Dave quit the insurance company his father built and has struck out on his own as a private investigator. Add in his breakup with his recent partner and he’s a man unencumbered. It’s the late 1970s and Dave may be aging a bit but he’s still handsome, wealthy, and recently in possession of a new convertible Triumph. Looks like it’s not all hard work.
Book Synopsis Kooks and Degenerates on Ice by : Thomas J. Whalen
Download or read book Kooks and Degenerates on Ice written by Thomas J. Whalen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Bruins’ 1970 Stanley Cup championship season by reliving all the moments in Kooks and Degenerates on Ice. While the United States seethed from racial violence, war, and mass shootings, the 1969-70 “Big, Bad Bruins,” led by the legendary Bobby Orr, brushed off their perennial losing ways to defeat the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup Finals for their first championship in 29 years. In Kooks and Degenerates on Ice: Bobby Orr, the Big Bad Bruins, and the Stanley Cup Championship That Transformed Hockey, Thomas J. Whalen recounts all the memorable moments from that championship season. Behind the no-nonsense yet inspired leadership of head coach Harry Sinden, the once laughingstock Bruins became the talk of the sporting world. Nicknamed the “Big, Bad Bruins” for their propensity to out-brawl and intimidate their opponents, the team rallied around the otherworldly play of Bobby Orr and his hard-hitting teammates to take the NHL by surprise in a season to remember. Kooks and Degenerates on Ice brings to life all the colorful personalities and iconic players from this Stanley Cup-raising team. In addition, the season is placed into its historical context as the United States struggled with issues of war, race, politics, and class, making this a must-read for sports enthusiasts, hockey fans, and those interested in twentieth-century American history.
