Book excerpt: Winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Fiction Winner of the Gotham Book Prize One of Barack Obama's "Favorite Books of the Year" Oprah's Book Club Pick Named one of the Top Ten Books of the Year by the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and TIME Magazine A Washington Post Notable Novel From the author of The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, the National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird, and the bestselling modern classic The Color of Water, comes one of the most celebrated novels of the year. In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project’s drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride’s funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird. In Deacon King Kong, McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood’s Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself. As the story deepens, it becomes clear that the lives of the characters—caught in the tumultuous swirl of 1960s New York—overlap in unexpected ways. When the truth does emerge, McBride shows us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion. Bringing to these pages both his masterly storytelling skills and his abiding faith in humanity, James McBride has written a novel every bit as involving as The Good Lord Bird and as emotionally honest as The Color of Water. Told with insight and wit, Deacon King Kong demonstrates that love and faith live in all of us.

Book excerpt: After years of resisting the undeniable pull toward the hunky geek, Starr discovers that fate has decided to take matters into its own hands. History repeats itself and she finds herself face to face with the seriously sexy male that she had been trying to forget. Will the fiery and independent Starr let Deacon in? Or does her heart have too many scars? THIRD BOOK IN THE ORION'S ORDER SERIES Orion's Order returns in another addictive installment about their secret world of magic and mystery. A world where the power of love prevails in the fight against an ancient evil force. DEACON Starr. The bane of my heart's existence. For years, we danced a flirty, banterous duet full of hot tension. Since the second we met, I knew there was something about her. It was like our stories were stars that mingled in the night sky and twinkled brighter in a desperate attempt for someone to read their shining story. Except, when I took the lead of our dance and had her heart spinning and knees weak, she ran in the other direction (or rather, sped off into the night on a motorcycle) with the taste of our kiss still lingering on our lips… and my heart crushed beneath the tires. Somehow, I ended up in another relationship with a fine female who doesn't twist my heart with wicked games. She is probably better for me. Yet, I can't stop thinking about the female who keeps her distance from me. The female who made it clear she doesn't want me. The female who is determined to put weed killer on anything that buds between us. The female who has my heart in her hands and doesn't even know it. STARR If life has taught me anything it's that there's only one thing you can truly count on: yourself. And I have built my life with this in mind. My job? Bounty hunter. I'm my own boss and, yeah, you guessed it—no partner… by design. Family? None. Friends? One. But I sure as hell don't rely on her for anything. Not that she isn't reliable or anything. Again, it's just how I roll. My love life? It's complicated. Hashtag: How in the hell had my love life become a damn Facebook status? So, yeah, I was doing just fine on my own… until a certain male waltzed into my life. And stole my hunt… for the second damn time. Devour this addictive series at your own risk... + Happily Ever After + Sexy Paranormal Romance + Multiple POV + Mature Content + This series is meant to be read in order for the best reading experience ------------------------ DEACON'S STAR is an adult paranormal romance. For more than a century, her homeland the Northern Alliance has fought the Kingdom of Tressor in what has come to be known as the Perpetual War. While her people look upon the conflict with reverence, Myranda’s hate for the war has made her an outcast. When she finds a precious sword among the equipment of a fallen warrior, she believes her luck may have changed. Little does she imagine that the treasure will draw her into an adventure of wizards and warriors, soldiers and rebels, and beasts both noble and monstrous. The journey will teach her much about her potential, about the origins of the war, and about the threat her world truly faces. Will Myranda unlock the secret of bringing peace once and for all, or will the world be lost to the Perpetual War?

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Deacon King Kong and The Good Lord Bird, winner of the National Book Award for Fiction: The modern classic that Oprah.com calls one of the best memoirs of a generation and that launched James McBride's literary career. More than two years on The New York Times bestseller list. As a boy in Brooklyn's Red Hook projects, James McBride knew his mother was different. But when he asked her about it, she'd simply say 'I'm light-skinned.' Later he wondered if he was different too, and asked his mother if he was black or white. 'You're a human being! Educate yourself or you'll be a nobody!' she snapped back. And when James asked about God, she told him 'God is the color of water.' This is the remarkable story of an eccentric and determined woman: a rabbi's daughter, born in Poland and raised in the Deep South who fled to Harlem, married a black preacher, founded a Baptist church and put twelve children through college. A celebration of resilience, faith and forgiveness, The Color of Water is an eloquent exploration of what family really means.

Book excerpt: How Can Deacons Mobilize Service in the Church? Deacons are essential to a church's health—yet confusion abounds regarding their biblical job description. What's their God-given role in a local congregation and how do they relate to the church's overall mission? In this short book, Matt Smethurst makes the case that deacons are model servants called to meet tangible needs, organize and mobilize acts of service, preserve the unity of the flock, and support the ministry of the elders. Clearing away common misconceptions, Smethurst offers practical guidance for deploying deacons and helping churches to flourish.

The most of us, it does not matter whether we're Priest, Deacons, religious, laity, or whoever we are, we can all be deceived. As I have said, there's a thin line between the truth and a lie".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a deacon? More than fifty years since the restoration of the permanent diaconate by the Second Vatican Council, the office of deacon is still in need of greater specificity about its purpose and place within the mission and organizational structure of the Church. While the Church is more than a social reality, the Church nonetheless has a social reality. Our understanding of the diaconate therefore benefits from a theological discussion of the divine element of the Church and a sociological examination of the human element. Understanding the Diaconate adds the resources of sociology and anthropology to the theological sources of scripture, liturgy, patristic era texts, theologians, and magisterial teachings to conclude that the deacon can be understood as “social intermediary and symbol of communitas” who serves the participation of the laity in the life and mission of the Church. This research proposes the deacon as a servant of the bond of communion within the Church (facilitating the relationship between the bishop/priest and his people), and between the People of God and the individual in need. Thus authentic diaconal ministry includes a vast array of many concrete contexts of pastoral importance where one does more than simply serve at Mass.
