Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This documentary history covers a period of Irish political and dramatic climax that had an impact not only on the nation, but on the world as well. During these years both Ireland and its major theater attained a position, however precarious, of stability. De Valera and the Republicans laid down their arms and entered politics, while, by a state subsidy, the Abbey was formally recognized as the Irish National Theatre. The importance of these years goes far beyond Ireland itself because the Irish masterpieces of Sean O'Casey - The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock, and The Plough and the Stars - made an impact upon world drama nearly as profound as that of Luigi Pirandello or of Eugene O'Neill. As this book is a documentary history, the story is told primarily through the words of the writers, actors, producers, critics, and members of the audience who themselves lived and created the story. However, these contemporary accounts are frequently amplified and put into modern perspective, particularly at crucial moments such as a major production, a final production, or a death. The authors have particularly done so with writers of some importance such as Edward Martyn, William Boyle, or T.C. Murray. Since the theater of these years was especially influenced by the state of the country, the authors give considerable space to the disruptive political events of the times. Always, however, this is done from the particular vantage point of the theater and its workers, for the Irish theater vigorously reacted to and quickly assimilated the turbulent political events of the day: the raids, the reprisals, the burnings, and the murders. These 1,800 days really break into two periods. The first comprises the violence of the Black and Tan War, the exhaustion that led to the treaty, and the bitterness occasioned by the treaty that led to the culminating ferocity of the civil war. The second is politically and theatrically a time of consolidation and assimilation. The two early plays of O'Casey might well be seen as symptoms of this healing process. The wound in the body politic was deep, however, and not to be so quickly or so easily healed; moreover, such matters as The Plough row and O'Casey's departure from Ireland inevitably seem to be later, more lasting symptoms of divisions that still fester in Ireland today. The authors' account of Ireland's drama is not merely confined to the capital city of Dublin, but also to Belfast, Cork, and the provinces. Also included are a full bibliography and cast listings of all the significant new plays produced or published during the period.

Book excerpt: Growing up in 1970s Wisconsin, Carolyn Hermann dreams of becoming a special-education teacher. But she has no idea how demanding her chosen vocation will be until she begins her first job: teaching autistic children in Midlands, South Carolina. Carolyn's class contains five high-functioning little boys, one of whom, Casey Ross, captures her imagination. Convinced that he is emotionally disturbed rather than autistic-partly because she believes his mother is remote and uncaring-Carolyn fantasizes about curing Casey even though her program director supports the diagnosis of autism. The following year Carolyn is assigned to teach a class of severely disabled students. Dealing with them is an enormous challenge, and she misses Casey. Burned out after two difficult years, Carolyn leaves teaching to become a homemaker and mother. Yet, despite the fulfillment she finds in this role, she feels like a failure for abandoning her students. Many years later Carolyn has returned to teaching and attends a convention where she encounters Casey's mother, now a disability-rights attorney. The two women reconnect and find that they have a great deal in common. And finally, their reunion provides the answer to a question that's haunted Carolyn for decades: Whatever happened to Casey Ross?

Book excerpt: * Instant NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY bestseller * * GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER for BEST DEBUT and BEST ROMANCE of 2019 * * BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR* for VOGUE, NPR, VANITY FAIR, and more! * What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic. "I took this with me wherever I went and stole every second I had to read! Absorbing, hilarious, tender, sexy—this book had everything I crave. I’m jealous of all the readers out there who still get to experience Red, White & Royal Blue for the first time!" - Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners "Red, White & Royal Blue is outrageously fun. It is romantic, sexy, witty, and thrilling. I loved every second." - Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John P. Marquand’s classic espionage series features Imperial Japan’s most skillful spy and the cloak-and-dagger intrigue of Asia between the world wars. In Your Turn, Mr. Moto, the abrupt cancellation of a transpacific flight strands World War I flying ace Casey Lee in Tokyo, leaving him with little choice but to accept a lucrative job offer from Japanese secret agent Mr. Moto. The mission begins on a steamship bound for Shanghai, where Casey’s fellow passengers include Mr. Moto and Sonya, a beautiful exile from White Russia. When a Chinese man turns up dead in Casey’s stateroom, the trio is caught up in a dangerous game of subterfuge, the outcome of which might just determine the fate of their nations. Set in 1930s Peking, Thank You, Mr. Moto, follows Tom Nelson, a jaded American expatriate, as he tries to help a gorgeous art dealer clear her name and find the real killer of a British ex-army officer trafficking stolen goods. The search leads Tom and Eleanor Joyce straight into the clutches of General Wu Lo Feng, a notorious warlord from the North who has surreptitiously entered the city. Tom and Eleanor’s only hope for survival is Mr. Moto, but can they trust the enigmatic spymaster—or are they pawns in a secret plot with stakes as monumental as they are sinister? In Think Fast, Mr. Moto, a Honolulu gambling establishment has become a key strand in a web of political and financial intrigue stretching all the way to the Far East. Sent to convince his cousin, Eva, to close the casino, Wilson Hitchings uncovers the plot and realizes just how much danger his family is in. He and Eva have no choice but to trust Japanese secret agent Mr. Moto, who claims to be in Hawaii on a similar mission. With a cast of shady international characters tracking their every move, this unlikely trio could be facing odds far too long to beat. First serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, the popular and acclaimed Mr. Moto Novels, which were the inspiration for eight films starring Peter Lorre, provide some of the most compelling and realistic depictions of spycraft in early twentieth-century fiction.
