Book excerpt: Through an innovative and wide-ranging exploration this book examines the reality behind the assumption that the idea of a universal ruler became increasingly irrelevant in late-medieval Europe. Focusing on France in the century before the outbreak of the Hundred Years War, it explores attitudes towards the contemporary institution of the western Empire, its rulers, and its place in the world. Historians have tended to assume that there was little place for a universal Empire and its would-be rulers in late-medieval thought. Pointing to the rapid decline in the fortunes of the Empire after the death of the Emperor Frederick II, the rediscovery of Aristotle's Politics by western Europeans, and the growing confidence - and burgeoning bureaucracy - of the kings of France and England, it is often argued that the claims to universal domination of men like the Emperor Henry VII, or indeed of popes like Boniface VIII, were becoming increasingly anachronistic, not to say a little ridiculous. Perceptions of the Empire undoubtedly changed in this period. Yet, whether it was in the cloisters of Saint-Denis, the pamphlets of Pierre Dubois, or even the thought of Charles d'Anjou, the first Angevin king of Sicily, this book argues that the Empire and its ruler still had an important, indeed unique, role to play in a properly ordered Christian society. Chris Jones grew up in the Middle East before reading history at Durham. He now lives in New Zealand where he holds a lectureship in History at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch.

So konnte die Gesellschaft mit diesem Symposium hier auch ihr 40-j�hriges Bestehen mit einer Festveranstaltung begehen. Im ersten Abschnitt des Bandes wird der Festakt zur Feier des 40-j�hrigen Jubil�ums der Frontinus-Gesellschaft dokumentiert. Dieser beinhaltet die Erfolgsgeschichte der Gesellschaft, den Festvortrag, die Verleihung der Frontinus-Medaille mit der Laudatio sowie der Dankesrede des Geehrten mit neuen Forschungsergebnissen zum Değirmendere Aqu�dukt von Ephesos. Der zweite Abschnitt ist dem Veranstaltungsort Trier gewidmet: Die Geschichte der Stadt wird anhand der ,,Highlights" der r�mischen Ausstellung im Rheinischen Landesmuseum erz�hlt und von deren urbanistischer Entwicklung berichtet. Die Trierer Ruwerleitung und die Barbara- bzw. Kaiserthermen sind dem Wasser gewidmet. Der dritte Abschnitt behandelt juristische Quellen sowie neue Forschungsmethoden in der Aqu�duktforschung. Zum ersten Thema wird das moderne Wasserrecht den Texten von Frontinus gegen�ber gestellt, dann wird die Herausforderung juristischer Quellen bei der Erforschung r�mischer Wasserversorgungssysteme aufzeigt. Zum zweiten Thema z�hlen die mit GPS und Photogrammetrie unterst�tzten Dokumentationsmethoden an den Aqu�dukten Roms und einfachere Methoden in Antiochia ad Cragum. Der vierte Abschnitt besch�ftigt sich mit Aqu�dukten und Qanaten: Die gro�e Zahl an Fernwasserleitungen in der T�rkei in Katalogform, eine Inschrift der Druckrohrleitung von Alatri in Latium, die Aqua Alexandrina in Rom, der r�mische Aqu�dukt von Lissabon, die Wasserleitungen und B�der von Lebna auf Kreta, r�mische M�nzen zu Aqu�dukten und zum Wassermanagement, das Almstollensystem im M�nchsberg in Salzburg sowie zwei Beitr�ge zu Qanaten in Luxemburg sind Themen dieses Abschnittes. Der n�chste Abschnitt ist den Thermen, Nymph�en und anderen innerst�dtischen Wassernutzungen gewidmet: Die Stabianer Thermen in Pompeji, die Caracallathermen von Rom, die r�mischen Heilthermen von Aqua Flaviae sind Beitr�ge zum ersten, die unter Nero und Domitian errichteten Nymph�en am Palatin, und die Nymph�en in den griechischen Provinzen vor Hadrian zum zweiten Thema, wozu auch noch das sog. Mettius-Modestos-Tor von Patara als Wassermonument z�hlt. Das Macellum von Sagalassos ist der einzige Beitrag zur innerst�dtischen Wassernutzung. Im letzten Abschnitt sind verschieden Themen zusammengefasst: Wasserspeicherung in den r�mischen Goldbergwerken auf der Iberischen Halbinsel, Druckleitungen mit einem neuen Wasserturm aus Ostia und r�mische Wasserh�hne, Wasserknappheit aus r�mischer Sicht in italienischen Regionen, Wasserversorgung im Libanon, Wasserm�hlen im Bereich des Rheinischen Braunkohleabbaus und medizinische Aspekte von trinkwasserbedingter Bleivergiftungen im deutschsprachigen Raum. Das Symposium wurde mit Exkursionen zu arch�ologischen St�tten und Museen nach Luxemburg, Frankreich und im Raum Trier abgerundet.

Book excerpt: The grand duchy of Luxembourg was created after the Napoleonic Wars, but at the time there was no 'nation' that identified with the emergent state. This book analyses how politicians, scholars and artists have initiated and contributed to nation-building processes in Luxembourg since the nineteenth century, processes that – as this book argues – are still ongoing. The focus rests on three types of representations of nationhood: a shared past, a common homeland and a national language. History was written so as to justify the country's political independence. Territorial borders shifted meaning, constantly repositioning the national community. The local dialect – initially considered German variant – was gradually transformed into the 'national language', Luxembourgish.
