Book excerpt: The central problem of temperature-emissivity separation is that we obtain N spectral measurements of radiance and need to find N + 1 unknowns (N emissivities and one temperature). To solve this problem in the presence of the atmosphere we need to find even more unknowns: N spectral transmissions [tau][sub atmo]([lambda]) up-welling path radiances L[sub path][up-arrow]([lambda]) and N down-welling path radiances L[sub path][down-arrow]([lambda]). Fortunately there are radiative transfer codes such as MODTRAN 3 and FASCODE available to get good estimates of [tau][sub atmo]([lambda]), L[sub path][up-arrow]([lambda]) and L[sub path][down-arrow]([lambda]) in the order of a few percent. With the growing use of hyperspectral imagers, e.g. AVIRIS in the visible and short-wave infrared there is hope of using such instruments in the mid-wave and thermal IR (TIR) some day. We believe that this will enable us to get around using the present temperature - emissivity separation (TES) algorithms using methods which take advantage of the many channels available in hyperspectral imagers. The first idea we had is to take advantage of the simple fact that a typical surface emissivity spectrum is rather smooth compared to spectral features introduced by the atmosphere. Thus iterative solution techniques can be devised which retrieve emissivity spectra [epsilon] based on spectral smoothness. To make the emissivities realistic, atmospheric parameters are varied using approximations, look-up tables derived from a radiative transfer code and spectral libraries. By varying the surface temperature over a small range a series of emissivity spectra are calculated. The one with the smoothest characteristic is chosen. The algorithm was tested on synthetic data using MODTRAN and the Salisbury emissivity database.

The author believes that this will enable him to get around using the present temperature-emissivity separation algorithms using methods which take advantage of the many channels available in hyper-spectral imagers. A simple fact used in coming up with a novel algorithm is that a typical surface emissivity spectrum are rather smooth compared to spectral features introduced by the atmosphere. Thus, a iterative solution technique can be devised which retrieves emissivity spectra based on spectral smoothness. To make the emissivities realistic, atmospheric parameters are varied using approximations, look-up tables derived from a radiative transfer code and spectral libraries. One such iterative algorithm solves the radiative transfer equation for the radiance at the sensor for the unknown emissivity and uses the blackbody temperature computed in an atmospheric window to get a guess for the unknown surface temperature. By varying the surface temperature over a small range a series of emissivity spectra are calculated. The one with the smoothest characteristic is chosen. The algorithm was tested on synthetic data using MODTRAN and the Salisbury emissivity database.

Book excerpt: "A new algorithm, optimized land surface temperature and emissivity retrieval (OLSTER), is presented to compensate for atmospheric effects and retrieve land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity from airborne thermal infrared hyperspectral data. The OLSTER algorithm is designed to retrieve properties of both natural and man-made materials. Multi-directional or multi-temporal observations are not required, and the scenes do not have to be dominated by blackbody features. The OLSTER algorithm consists of a preprocessing step, an iterative search for near-blackbody pixels, and an iterative constrained optimization loop. The preprocessing step provides initial estimates of LST per pixel and the atmospheric parameters of transmittance and upwelling radiance for the entire image. Pixels that are under- or over-compensated by the estimated atmospheric parameters are classified a near-blackbody and lower emissivity pixels, respectively. A constrained optimization of the atmospheric parameters using generalized reduced gradients on the near-blackbody pixels ensures physical results. The downwelling radiance is estimated from the upwelling radiance by applying a look-up table of coefficients based on a polynomial regression of radiative transfer model runs for the same sensor altitude. The LST and emissivity per pixel are retrieved simultaneously using the well established ISSTES algorithm. The OLSTER algorithm retrieves land surface temperatures within about ± 0.01 based on numerical simulation and validation work comparing results from sensor data with ground truth measurements. The OLSTER algorithm is currently one of only a few algorithms available that have been documented to retrieve accurate land surface temperatures and absolute land surface spectral emissivities from passive airborne hyperspectral LWIR sensor imagery"--Abstract.

In hyperspectral remote sensing systems, pixels from a 3D hypercube can be described as a one-dimensional spectra. This one-dimensional spectrum can contain information about surface reflectance and emissivity variation as a function of wavelength, and is often thought of as the materials spectral signature or fingerprint. This spectral signature can be used in applications such as spectral target detection. To study the spectral signatures variation and its impact on target detection, for example, a parameter trade-off study is often needed. In this research, a full-spectrum spectral imaging system analytical model, called the Forecasting and Analysis of Spectroradiometric System Performance (FASSP), has been used and improved upon. FASSP uses first- and second-order statistics of surface spectral reflectances or emissivities and temperature variations to describe a user-defined remote sensing scenario. The statistics are propagated through an imaging system-like model with the addition of atmosphere effects and sensor noise, for example. The system can then use this information in a target detection application where results are illustrated in the form of a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. The current FASSP model performs target detection in both the VNIR and LWIR. More specifically, in the LWIR the model relied on at-sensor radiance statistics. However, in most realistic cases, target detection in the LWIR is applied to retrieved emissivities where surface temperature is also a key obtained parameter. This retrieved domain was absent in the FASSP model. Therefore, to obtain retrieved surface temperatures and simulate more realistic LWIR scenarios, a statistical approach to temperature/emissivity separation (TES) called the statistical iterative spectrally smooth temperature- emissivity separation (S-ISSTES) algorithm has been derived and integrated into the FASSP model. The new S-ISSTES module can retrieve first- and second-order statistics of surface emissivities and ground temperatures. This work was derived and validated in a study that used HyTES LWIR data. Additionally, this research constructed and implemented an equivalent adaptive cosine estimator (ACE) detector called the cotangent detector (COT) into the FASSP model. This new detector was also tested and validated. Lastly, we constructed a study using the Hapke mixing model, based on user defined particle-related parameters coupled with Monte-Carlo simulations, to generate needed covariance matrices for mixed particle material detection studies using FASSP."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Emissivity: Characteristics, Determination and Applications opens with an overview of a variety of remote sensing retrieval methods of land surface emissivity from space. The authors provide some theoretical background about land surface emissivity and recall various retrieval methods.During the atmospheric hypersonic re-entry of a space vehicle, the extremely high temperatures generated in the shock layer between the bow shock and the vehicle lead to very high temperatures at the wall, the values of which depend mainly on the total heat flux impinging the surface, and its emissivity. The higher the emissivity of the surface, the lower the temperature that is achieved. Thus, in order to perform reliable temperature predictions at the surface during space re-entry into the atmosphere, the authors suggest that proper knowledge of material surface emissivity is mandatory. In the penultimate chapter, the emissivity due to neutrino-pair production in e+e- annihilation in the context of the 331RHν model is calculated in a way that can be used in supernova models.Lastly, a photoacoustic cell is constructed to view two different surfaces through a pair of out of phase optical chopping wheels records the difference in radiation fluxes from the two surfaces. The point at which a lock-in amplifier records a null in the photoacoustic signal is where the radiation fluxes from the two surfaces are identical, permitting the relative emissivities of the two surfaces to be determined.

Book excerpt: Hyperspectral remote sensing is an emerging, multidisciplinary field with diverse applications that builds on the principles of material spectroscopy, radiative transfer, imaging spectrometry, and hyperspectral data processing. While there are many resources that suitably cover these areas individually and focus on specific aspects of the hyperspectral remote sensing field, this book provides a holistic treatment that captures its multidisciplinary nature. The content is oriented toward the physical principles of hyperspectral remote sensing as opposed to applications of hyperspectral technology. Readers can expect to finish the book armed with the required knowledge to understand the immense literature available in this technology area and apply their knowledge to the understanding of material spectral properties, the design of hyperspectral systems, the analysis of hyperspectral imagery, and the application of the technology to specific problems.
