Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy: Handbook for Travellers: Second Part, Central Italy and Rome The objects of the Hand book for Italy, which consists of three volumes, each complete in itself, are to supply the traveller with a few remarks on the progress of civilisation and art among the people he is about to visit, to render him as independent as possible of the services of guides and valets-de-place, to protect him against extortion, and in every way to aid him in deriving enjoyment and instruction from his tour in one of the most fascinating countries in the world. The Handbook will also, it is hoped, be the means of saving the traveller many a trial of temper; for there is probably no country in Europe where the patience is more severely taxed than in some parts of Italy. The Handbook is based on the Editor's personal acquaintance with the places described, most of which he has repeatedly and carefully explored. As, however, changes are constantly taking place, he will highly appreciate any communications with which travellers may kindly favour him, if the result of their own observation. The information already received from numerous correspondents, which he gratefully acknowledges, has in many cases proved most serviceable. The sixth edition of Central Italy and Rome, like its Predecessor, has been carefully revised and brought up to date. For the description of the antiquities or Rome, the Editor is indebted to Professor H. Nissen of Strassburg. The Introductory articles on art Prof. R. Kekule of Bonn and Prof. A. Springer of Leipsic have been adapted for the use of English travellers with the kind assistance of Mrs. J. A. Crowe, the eminent historian of art. Professor Springer has also contributed many valuable incidental remarks on modern art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
