Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Short Stories The six stories here printed have been chosen as excellent in themselves, as representative of the leading modem Italian short story writers, and as affording varied pictures of life in different parts of Italy. The order in which they are arranged serves in general to indicate their relative difficulty, - besides giving place aux dames. The first two stories are simple in wording and in construction, and in order to make them available for effective use at the beginning of a course they have been given very full grammatical notes, and the irregular verb forms which occur in them (except the forms of avere and essere) have been separately entered in the vocabulary. The texts have been taken from current Italian editions, and no changes have been made in them except for the correction of obvious errors. The introductions dealing with Serao, Deledda, Fucini, and d'Annunzio are by Mr. Altrocchi. The other two introductions and the notes are by Mr. Wilkins. The introductions for Fogazzaro and Fucini mention all of their collected works. The other writers have produced so much that complete enumeration seemed inadvisable, and only their more important books are mentioned. Continuous and detailed bibliographies of their writings and of critical studies dealing with them appear in the several volumes of La Critica, a review founded in 1903 and directed by Benedetto Croce. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Italian Love Stories But notwithstanding all that is lost in the re-telling, in a different language and at a different day, something remains, independent of both the old life and the old language, which the past has and can bestow even upon the unlettered readers of an alien country and an alien time, and that is the stories themselves, apart from their treatment and expression. Even retold their charm cannot, we are fain to hope, wholly evaporate. It is at all events possible to convey in some measure, by a simple recital of their contents, some idea of the positive genius for the picturesque in incident, episode, and surroundings, characteristic of the school to which they belong; of the blind intensity with which a single passion is painted, dominating and determining the living and dying of men and women of bygone generations; of the simple and undeviating directness of aim, good or evil, upon which the plots are constructed with such excellence of art that they seem a mere accident of instinct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cart of Many Colors a Story of Italy Signs over the little shops would be written in Italian words; and all the babies would have dark Italian eyes and Shy Italian smiles; and all the people in the street would talk and laugh and sing in Italian; and out of all the doorways would come the smell of Italian cooking. And sometimes, at night, the whole street would be decked and garlanded with little electric lights, red and white and green, to celebrate the birth day Of the Italian saint who used to be the guardian spirit of the old Village in Italy, and who of course had emigrated with his villagers when they came to the new world. The Italians are not the only people who get together in groups and colonies in Our Amer ican cities. The Poles, the Russian Jews, the Germans, the Chinese, all the lonely new immi grants do it. They feel strange and far away from their own lands in this new country, and they want to live next door to some one who understands their language and their Old life. But thoughtful Americans are beginning to see that these little patches of Poland, Germany, Italy, are almost as far from America as if they were still on the other Side of the ocean. Daily messages, by cable and wireless, flash between Italy and America, but between Little Italy and Riverside Drive, in New York, there is no wire less; Mars and the Earth are not more far apart in some ways. It is to help Old Ameri cans and new Americans to get together and understand each other that little books like this one are written, - old Americans whose grand parents were born here, and new Americans whose children will be born here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Italian Poets Histoire Littéraire, etc. It is written with his usual grace, Vivacity, and acuteness, and contains a good no tice Of the Tasso controversy. As to the Pisan edition Of the works, it is the completest, I believe, in point Of con tents, ever published, comprises all the controversial criticism, and is, Of course, very useful; but it contains no life except Manso's now known to be very inconclu sive), has got a heap O feeble variorum comments on the Jerusalem, no notes worth speaking Of to the rest of the works, and, notwithstanding the claim in the title page to the merit Of a better order, has lefi the cor respondence in a deplorable state Of irregularity, as well as totally without elucidation. The learned Professor is an agreeable writer, and I believe a very pleasant man, but he certainly is a provoking editor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Italian Book My conviction is that the latter course is the more natural and the easier, and that it leads to results of far better quality. It is natural, in preparation for intellectual creative work in any field, that a period of observation and absorption should precede creative activity. Composition, written or oral, as a feature of initial elementary instruction takes a large share of the student's time and energy, and leads to the commission of more errors, and consequently to the development of more discouragement and hostility, than any other part of the work. Furthermore, the practice of composition at the start gets the student into the habit of framing a foreign sentence as a succession of isolated words, with a laborious dependence on models and vocabularies, and leads to the formation of many erroneous first impres sions. Such linguistic tendencies are vicious in the extreme and are very hard to overcome. If on the other hand the composition be deferred until a considerable acquaintance with the foreign language itself has been attained, the student is able to deal with word groups instead of single words; he may draw freely upon a considerable store of linguistic experience instead of being tied to particular lists and examples; and he can compose with no great danger of excavating brain paths that lead only to red ink. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Lessons The Italian language, as it had been forming in Tuscany, was not adopted for many centuries by the people of other parts of Italy in familiar intercourse. It was preeminently a literary language, created by the great writers of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centur ies, a perfect instrument for the epic stories, for the lyric expression of thought, for the eloquent present ation of questions political, social or philosophical, but ill adapted to the dialogue of everyday life. Such was the Italian language the language of Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio, perfected by Machiavelli, Tasso and Ariosto. And, with it, the dialects peculiar to each region held tenaciously to their existence: Venetian or Lombardian, Sicilian or Piedmontese, they were hardly understood beyond their provincial limits.
