Book excerpt: "What was the role of images in the Western tradition? And how did they relate to the printed work? The essays in this wide-ranging collection address these questions by presenting a variety of material, including visual representations that can be read as texts and traditional book illustrations. The editors offer a critical review of visual arts and texts, encompassing thirteenth-century Spanish miniatures, Italian Renaissance painting and book illustrations, the explosion of inter-arts comparisons in the nineteenth century in the works of such diverse writers as Blake, Mallarme and D'Annunzio, and the modern debate on the visual arts."
Book Synopsis Italian Cultural Lineages by : Jonathan White
Download or read book Italian Cultural Lineages written by Jonathan White and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Italian Cultural Lineages, Jonathan White seeks answers to the elusive questions: what is Italian culture and what is the Italian identity? By tracing Italian life and art through several themes viewing and spectatorship, fantasy, passion, justice, reputation, and lifestyles White offers new ways of perceiving an ancient cultural tradition in the twenty-first century. In doing so, he challenges readers to discern rich poetic seams that bind together his varied subject matter. Italian Cultural Lineages is primarily concerned with factors that unify Italians, however geographically dispersed they may be. Drawing on extensive archival and historical research, White shows how oftentimes Italian cultural traditions that appear to be extinct are, in fact, enduring pushed out of the mainstream or submerged at some given point in history, only to re-surface and take on new meanings at a later date. Other, more marginal currents might disrupt and fragment Italian identity, politically and socially. However, White proposes that the challenge to Italy in these new and difficult lessons in tolerance has the potential to produce a much stronger culture, primed to welcome the marginal into an expanded spirit of all that counts as Italian. Ideally suited to course use, and written with great lucidity, Italian Cultural Lineages will prove fascinating to students, academics, and general readers alike.

Book Synopsis The Antonio II Badile Album of Drawings: The Origins of Collecting Drawings in Early Modern Northern Italy by : Evelyn Karet
Download or read book The Antonio II Badile Album of Drawings: The Origins of Collecting Drawings in Early Modern Northern Italy written by Evelyn Karet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Karet's in-depth study of the Antonio II Badile Album - the earliest known example of an art collection pasted onto the pages of a book - is both focused and broad in its appeal to those interested in the early modern era. The provenance of the album is traced from its assemblage to the seventeenth-century collection of Conte Lodovico Moscardo to its dismantling by the dealer Francis Matthiesen in the 1950s, establishing that the volume conserved in the Frits Lugt Collection is not an original but a replica produced by Matthiesen. Although Antonio II must be celebrated as the collector of the drawings, new paleographic analysis has identified the actual compiler of the album after Antonio?s death providing a terminus post quem in the late 1530s or early 1540s. Karet enlarges the focus from the album itself to the historic tradition of collecting drawings in northern Italy in the early modern era before Vasari, for which the album provides a new point of reference. Throughout the book, Karet discusses the Badile family, examines the individual drawings in the book, investigates the contacts between artists and humanists, their rich, diverse collections and the humanist mind-set that fostered the appreciation of drawings. She explores notable early drawing collections in northern Italy and the role of northern Italy as a center of collection in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The book concludes with two appendices: a reconstruction of the original album, including a discussion of the reconstruction process, suggestions about what the album originally looked like, and a page-by-page guide to its contents; and a detailed analysis of Francis Matthiesen's career. This book opens up new areas of inquiry into an overlooked subject.
Book Synopsis Embattled Avant-Gardes by : Walter L. Adamson
Download or read book Embattled Avant-Gardes written by Walter L. Adamson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-11-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Adamson leads his readers through intricate debates with care and skill. Even the non-specialist reader will come away with an understanding of the stakes in modernist studies."—Mary Gluck, author of Popular Bohemia: Modernism and Urban Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris "No serious student of the European avant-garde in the early twentieth century will be able to overlook this subtle and impassioned attempt to rethink its history: its far-reaching ambitions and its strategies for achieving them, its successes and its failures. Because of Adamson's distinctive perspective and the breadth of his research, I persistently found myself being forced to rethink the history of the European avant-garde and question some of my own assumptions and conclusions."—Robert Wohl, author of The Spectacle of Flight: Aviation and the Western Imagination, 1920-1950

Book Synopsis Italian Medieval Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cloisters by : Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.)
Download or read book Italian Medieval Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cloisters written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2010 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The collection of Italian medieval sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters began with the acquisition in 1908 of a Romanesque column statue; today the Museum's holdings comprise more than seventy works dating from the ninth to the late fifteenth century ... The birthplaces of these works range from Sicily to Venice; some typify local styles, others illustrate the intense artistic exchanges taking place within Italy and between Italy and the wider world ... Technological advances of the last decades have made it possible to determine more precisely the materials and techniques from which works of art are made, the history of their alteration, and the mechanisms of their deterioration. Using such techniques, scholars have been able to ascertain, for example, that sculptures previously thought to be modern works carved in the medieval manner were in fact completely authentic. This innovative volume represents a watershed in the study of sculpture: a collaborative dialogue between an art historian and a conservator—between art history and art science—that deepens our understanding of the object we see, while illuminating its elusive, enigmatic history"--From publisher's description.
