Book Synopsis The New Peasantries by : Jan Douwe van der Ploeg
Download or read book The New Peasantries written by Jan Douwe van der Ploeg and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the position, role and significance of the peasantry in an era of globalization, particularly of the agrarian markets and food industries. It argues that the peasant condition is characterized by a struggle for autonomy that finds expression in the creation and development of a self-governed resource base and associated forms of sustainable development. In this respect the peasant mode of farming fundamentally differs from entrepreneurial and corporate ways of farming. The author demonstrates that the peasantries are far from waning. Instead, both industrialized and developing countries are witnessing complex and richly chequered processes of 're-peasantization', with peasants now numbering over a billion worldwide. The author's arguments are based on three longitudinal studies (in Peru, Italy and The Netherlands) that span 30 years and provide original and thought-provoking insights into rural and agrarian development processes. The book combines and integrates different bodies of literature: the rich traditions of peasant studies, development sociology, rural sociology, neo-institutional economics and the recently emerging debates on Empire.

Book Synopsis Economics of Innovation: The Case of Food Industry by : Giovanni Galizzi
Download or read book Economics of Innovation: The Case of Food Industry written by Giovanni Galizzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giovanni Galizzi and Luciano Venturini The food industry has been characterized by several and profound changes in its structure and competitive environment in the last decades. Although it is not a research-oriented industry, there is no arguing that technological change and particularly product innovations are crucial determinants of ftrms' performance and In recent years food manufacturers have accelerated the consumers' welfare. development of new products, by using new ingredients, processing and packaging techniques. Thus, food markets are increasingly characterized by competitive environments where relevant flows of innovative products, quality improvements and new technologies provide new consumption trends, food habits, market opportunities and ftrms' strategies. However, the issue of product innovation in the food industries has been rather neglected by economists. Few works have explicitly addressed this issue. After the pioneering book of Buzzell and Nourse (1967), one can count few contributes. Connor (1981) examined the empirical determinants of new food products introductions. Padberg and Westgren (1979) provided crucial insights about the nature of food innovation through their notions of consumer inertia, technological redundancy and incremental product innovation. Some case-studies provide useful empirical materials, but they are generally sparse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In humanitys struggle to find timely solutions to environmental problems, it is easily forgotten that access to our shared spaces has never been equal. This collection deals with the landscapes and places of rural, urban, and wilderness areas in relation development. Contributions examine the complex relationship that human beings maintain with their rural and urban environments and with other species in various places and spaces. Nothing is taken for granted: colonial history, globalization, localization, hybrid relationships, colonial or "shared"architecture, religious backgrounds, and claims to equal access all fuse with policy strategies. This volume discusses these issues within the framework of developmental discourse, while asserting the rights of access to the global commons for all world citizens as well as other species.
Book Synopsis Scenario Studies for the Rural Environment by : Job F.Th. Schoute
Download or read book Scenario Studies for the Rural Environment written by Job F.Th. Schoute and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural areas need to fulfil a large variety of functions and to accommodate many activities. The complexity of the problems, limited funds, and the almost irreversible character of some interventions result in a compelling need to evaluate ex ante the effects of alternative solutions for designation of land, for measures to develop infrastructure, and for soil and water management. Scenario studies are undertaken to help manage the complexity, to place bounds on uncertainties, and to create new visions. After an overview of the nature, variety and scope of scenario studies, the book illuminates various European examples and reviews, under the following headings: regional soil and water management; nature development and landscape quality; rural planning and the future of regions.
