Book excerpt: Excerpt from Israel in Egypt: A Poem With the desire, apparently, to render more easily credible those extraordinary events, the Plagues of Egypt, - some of the commentators on the Book of Exodus have laid much stress on the fact, that they are all, in kind, such phenomena only as have not infrequently been known in that country. They say, for example, that, at certain seasons, the Nile assumes a reddish color, resembling blood: that the rivers, at times, produce immense numbers of frogs: that the Egyptians have frequently been afflicted with small vermin on their bodies: that immense swarms of flies occasionally pester them, filling the houses, and the air: that a murrain among cattle has often destroyed thousands; and grievous boils have been equally fatal among men: that most violent storms of hail have caused great destruction: that clouds of locusts have wrought havoc through the land: that, at certain times, during a peculiar wind, the air has become fearfully dark; and that pestilences have suddenly carried off numbers who, up to the hour of attack, had been in full vigor. In this way are the ten plagues represented as natural events merely; and, so far, easily credible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Israel in Egypt by : James K. Hoffmeier
Download or read book Israel in Egypt written by James K. Hoffmeier and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of the Hebrew Bible have in the last decade begun to question the historical accuracy of the Israelite sojourn in Egypt, as described in the book of Exodus. The reason for the rejection of the exodus tradition is said to be the lack of historical and archaeological evidence in Egypt. Those advancing these claims, however, are not specialists in the study of Egyptian history, culture, and archaeology. In this pioneering book, James Hoffmeier examines the most current Egyptological evidence and argues that it supports the biblical record concerning Israel in Egypt.
Download or read book Rifqa written by Mohammed El-Kurd and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rifqa is Mohammed El-Kurd’s debut collection of poetry, written in the tradition of Ghassan Kanafani’s Palestinian Resistance Literature. The book narrates the author’s own experience of dispossession in Sheikh Jarrah--an infamous neighborhood in Jerusalem, Palestine, whose population of refugees continues to live on the brink of homelessness at the hands of the Israeli government and US-based settler organizations. The book, named after the author’s late grandmother who was forced to flee from Haifa upon the genocidal establishment of Israel, makes the observation that home takeovers and demolitions across historical Palestine are not reminiscent of 1948 Nakba, but are in fact a continuation of it: a legalized, ideologically-driven practice of ethnic cleansing.

Book Synopsis Hatshepsut, Speak to Me by : Ruth Whitman
Download or read book Hatshepsut, Speak to Me written by Ruth Whitman and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hatshepsut, Speak to Me, Ruth Whitman's eighth volume of poetry, is her most innovative and adventurous book. It is in the form of a conversation with Queen Hatshepsut, the only woman pharaoh in ancient Egypt, whose reign of more than twenty years was one of the most peaceful and artistically splendid eras in Egyptian history. As poet and pharaoh talk to each other, it becomes apparent that the two lives intersect remarkably across the centuries. Both must face problems of sexual identity, love, work, mothering, conflict, and loss. An admirer of Hatshepsut for the past forty years, Whitman has spent the last five researching the pharaoh's life and surrounding culture, visiting Egypt twice in order to study the landscape along the Nile to contemplate Hatshepsut's monuments, particularly her spectacular three-tiered temple at Deir el Bahri in the Valley of the Kings. The result is a vibrant glimpse into two parallel lives, illustrating a unique relationship between two women separated by twenty-five centuries, and illuminating many of the issues relevant to every contemporary woman's experience. Whitman goes beyond just telling Hatshepsut's story. She connects herself with the life of her subject, speaks to her, and learns from her. Hatshepsut, Speak to Me represents a culmination of Ruth Whitman's series of groundbreaking narrative poems written in the voices of other extraordinary women-Lizzie Borden, Tamsen Donner, Hanna Senesh, Anna Pavlova, and Isadora Duncan.

Book Synopsis “Did I Not Bring Israel Out of Egypt?” by : James K. Hoffmeier
Download or read book “Did I Not Bring Israel Out of Egypt?” written by James K. Hoffmeier and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hebrew Scriptures consider the exodus from Egypt to be Israel’s formative and foundational event. Indeed, the Bible offers no other explanation for Israel’s origin as a people. It is also true that no contemporary record regarding a man named Moses or the Israelites generally, either living in or leaving Egypt has been found. Hence, many biblical scholars and archaeologists take a skeptical attitude, dismissing the exodus from the realm of history. However, the contributors to this volume are convinced that there is an alternative, more positive approach. Using textual and archaeological materials from the ancient Near East in a comparative way, in conjunction with the Torah’s narratives and with other biblical texts, the contributors to this volume (specialists in ancient Egypt, ancient Near Eastern culture and history, and biblical studies) maintain that the reports in the Hebrew Bible should not be cavalierly dismissed for ideological reasons but, rather, should be deemed to contain authentic memories.

Book Synopsis Israel's Poetry of Resistance by : Hugh Page
Download or read book Israel's Poetry of Resistance written by Hugh Page and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noting that Israel's earliest responses to earth-shaking changes were cast in the powerfully expressive language of poetry, Hugh R. Page Jr. argues that the careful collection and preservation of these traditions was an act of resistance, a communal no to the forces of despair and a yes to the creative power of the Spirit. Further, Page argues, the power of these poems to craft and shape a future for a people who had suffered acute displacement and marginalization offers a rich spiritual repertoire for Africana peoples today, and for all who find themselves perennially outside the social or political mainstream.
