Book excerpt: Dan Boothby had been drifting for more than twenty years, without the pontoons of family, friends or a steady occupation. He was looking for but never finding the perfect place to land. Finally, unexpectedly, an opportunity presented itself. After a lifelong obsession with Gavin Maxwell's Ring of Bright Water trilogy, Boothby was given the chance to move to Maxwell's former home, a tiny island on the western seaboard of the Highlands of Scotland. Island of Dreams is about Boothby's time living there, and about the natural and human history that surrounded him; it's about the people he meets and the stories they tell, and about his engagement with this remote landscape, including the otters that inhabit it. Interspersed with Boothby's own story is a quest to better understand the mysterious Gavin Maxwell. Beautifully written and frequently leavened with a dry wit, Island of Dreams is a charming celebration of the particularities of place.

Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR WATERSTONES BOOK OF THE YEAR In Island Dreams, Gavin Francis examines our collective fascination with islands. He blends stories of his own travels with psychology, philosophy and great voyages from literature, shedding new light on the importance of islands and isolation in our collective consciousness. Comparing the life of freedom of thirty years of extraordinary travel from the Faroe Islands to the Aegean, from the Galapagos to the Andaman Islands with a life of responsibility as a doctor, community member and parent approaching middle age, Island Dreams riffs on the twinned poles of rest and motion, independence and attachment, never more relevant than in today’s perennially connected world. Illustrated with maps throughout, this is a celebration of human adventures in the world and within our minds.

In a lyrical and immensely moving style, this book combines a family saga and a doomed love story, set against the background of French Polynesia in the period leading up to the first nuclear tests. The text is highly critical of the French government, and as a result its publication in Tahiti was polarising.

Book excerpt: "Ogle captures this island city in all its quirky charm. Her story breezes along in typical Key West fashion--full of gossip and humor, with the jolt of a good cup of Cuban coffee."--Lee Irby, University of South Florida, St. Petersburg Parrotheads, Hemingway aficionados, and sun worshipers view Key West as a tropical paradise, and scores of writers have set tales of mystery and romance on the island. The city's real story--told by Maureen Ogle in this lively and engaging illustrated account--is as fabulous as fiction. In the early 1800s, the city's pioneer founders battled Indians, pirates, and deadly disease and created wealth beyond their imaginations. In the two centuries since, Key West has nurtured tragedy and triumph and has stood at the crossroads of American history. When Florida joined the Confederacy in 1861, Union troops seized control of strategically located Key West and city residents spent four years living under martial law. In the early 1890s, Key West Cubans helped Jose Marti launch the revolution that eventually ended Spain's control of their homeland. A few years later, the battleship Maine steamed out of Key West harbor on its last, tragic voyage. At the turn of the century, Henry Flagler astounded the entire country by building a technological marvel, an overseas railroad from mainland Florida to Key West, more than 100 miles long. In the 1920s and 1930s, painters, rumrunners, and writers (including Ernest Hemingway and Robert Frost) discovered Key West. During World War II, the federal government and the military war machine permanently altered the island's landscape. In the second half of the 20th century, bohemians, hippies, gays, and jet-setters began writing a new chapter in Key West's social history. All of these personalities and events are wrapped in Ogle's unique and candid history of the island, an account that will fascinate past and present citizens of the Conch Republic, history buffs who like a well-told tale, and the millions of tourists from all over the world who love this colorful island city. Maureen Ogle is retired from the University of South Alabama.

Book excerpt: "In the winter of 1982, long before she became the watercolor artist and author we know today, Susan Branch, 34-years-old and heartbroken from the sudden and unexpected end of her marriage in California, "ran away from home" to the Island of Martha's Vineyard hoping to gain perspective. It was meant to be temporary, a three-month time-out from the daily grind of being broken up and miserable, but within days of her arrival, alone and not quite in her right mind, Susan "accidentally" bought a tiny one-bedroom cottage in the woods - which is how she discovered she was moving 3,000 miles away from everyone and everything she had known and loved. Funny, observant, touching, and addictive (you are not going to want this book to end), based on the diaries she has kept all her life, Susan Branch relates her inspirational tale of lost love and self discovery, her search for roots, purpose, and destiny with laugh-out-loud honesty. A road map for overcoming loss, following your heart, and making dreams come true, charmingly hand-lettered and watercolored in Susan's inimitable style, there are diary excerpts, recipes, and hundreds of photographs."--Provided by Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author Katherine Stone sweeps you from Venice and Denver and from Carmel to New Orleans in this shimmering sequel to A MIDNIGHT CLEAR. “I wonder what happens to a dream when you get too close.” “Maybe,” Pierce said softly, “it gets even better.” They came closer, then, to different dream. He began the journey, touching her gently. Her eyes glowed yes with wanting, yes with wishing, yes with wonder, and her lips opened to his, welcoming, wanting, wishing. Yes. Yes. Then no. No. “I can’t do this. It’s madness, Pierce.” “It’s gladness, Ana.” “No, Pierce. You don’t understand. I am going mad.” Two courageous, gifted, lovely women. Two fiercely honorable and passionate men. Two hauntingly beautiful love stories embroidered together in a glittering tapestry of the bravest journey of the heart . . . the soaring journey from the loss of hope to the splendor of love. For Boston-proper librarian Ana Finch, life has been quiet, certain, safe, until an incident at a wedding changes everything. The headaches begin then, as does the bone-chilling cold. She feels compelled to move to Denver, even though the Mile High city is a place she has never been. She knows that dreams of love are not for her, they must not and cannot be, and yet there he is, a man who touches the lonely and wishing places deep inside her as no man ever has . . . Denver architect Pierce Rourke believes in dreams—for others—and in love, for others, too. His masterpiece, the Island, is spectacular proof of his beliefs. It is there, on rock as white as snow and amid shimmering fountains spun from molten glass, that he has created a place just for weddings, for the celebration of the glorious gifts and promises of love. Pierce’s work is his passion. He’s not looking for anything more. But there she is, Ana. The dream he never knew to dream. And now the man who has built a place for dreams and the woman who has never dared to dream must try to find, together, a way to triumph over destiny. Praise for Island of Dreams and the Novels of Katherine Stone: “Katherine Stone’s characters live with the shadows over their lives and make the best of them, honorably, courageously and generously. We can be happier for knowing these people in the short run, and better for knowing them in the long run.”—Reviewer’s Choice Reviews on Island of Dreams “An intriguing story . . . beautifully written.”—Rendezvous on Island of Dreams “Katherine Stone's magical touch makes A Midnight Clear a story for all seasons.”—Book Page “Remarkably romantic and thoroughly enchanting.”—Rendezvous on Pearl Moon “Poignant . . . Cass is an intrepid heroine, but it is Chase who wins our hearts when he refuses to allow Cass’s seeming betrayal to stop him from protecting his beloved.”—Midwest Book Review on Bed of Roses “Fairytale elements mix with those of a present day romance for . . . thoroughly enjoyable results.”—Kirkus Reviews on Rainbows “The Stone magic makes these books such a pleasure to read and share.”—Rendezvous “Katherine Stone’s unique voice is clearly evident in this newest lyrical tale . . . an almost mystical quality that is distinctly her own.”—Romantic Times on A Midnight Clear Katherine Stone writes “in the vein of Danielle Steel and Sandra Brown”—Library Journal

Book excerpt: This book is written so I could share my life and adventuresboth the sadness and the happier times that prevailed. I want people to understand me so that they can better understand a child who was once lost without guidance but triumphed in the end. The island where I grew up held much adventure. Along with the bountiful and lush greenery, exotic fruits, heavenly gardens, and beautiful beachesI experienced much pain and confusion throughout my childhood. This is my story. I wrote it to inspire my children to never give up on each other and love each othercome what may. I pray that future mothers will never abandon their children no matter what the circumstances may be. God always has a way to make things right. Book Review: Island of Dreams Author: Heidy Ramos Reviewed by Cynthia Brian When you read the title and observe the beautiful cover of the Island of Dreams, you are immediately transported to an idyllic coastline filled with jumping fish in azure blue waters, caramel colored beaches boasting a tropical thatched hut, swaying palm trees and an adorable little girl with open, welcoming arms. Ah, you whisper, this does indeed look like a dream island. Then you read the first few paragraphs of the Introduction that begins The year was 1970. The place was Subic Bay. I was four years old at the time. We were huddling together on a street corner. I remember crying and shouting out my mothers name. Mom! Mom! Mom! Dont leave us! The tears fall as the autobiographical story of Heidy Ramos and her numerous siblings living and moving from tiny island to tiny island in the Philippines unravels into a web of abandonment, abuse, and betrayal so raw, so incredibly despicable, so horribly inhumane that you wonder how she survived. She remembers hiding with her brothers and sisters in a cornfield as her mother screamed in agony as she was beaten. Without a word, her mother left for the United States, leaving the children in the care of a belittling grandmother, an elderly grandfather, and a drunken uncle whose favorite past time was abusing the children. The nightmare began anew each day as the children scavenged for food while attempting to avoid the wrath of the beatings. The only solace enjoyed by the children was swimming in the sea. They would swim from island to island, actually hoping to drown, as life was such a living hell. The uncle spent money on alcohol and gambling, while the children starved, living without necessities. They were taunted and teased at school because their mother had abandoned them and no father claimed them. The siblings only had one another to lean on. An older sister smuggled the younger children aboard a ship and took them to a far away island. Heidi recalls this was one of the most frightening days she had ever encountered. When her uncles heard they had escaped, they threatened to kill them all when discovered. Although the sisters intentions were honorable, she and her husband did not have the financial resources to sustain the bigger brood. The neglectful mother returns with a new husband and more children in tow yet refuses to claim her Filipino children as her own. She instructs them to call her Auntie, probably, the author assumes, her mother was ashamed because they were dark skinned while her new American children were blonds. The mother wanted to be part of a high society, not trapped in poverty. Ms. Ramos native language is Tagalog and the book is written as if she is thinking in Tagalog and translating to English. At first the misuse of words, the grammatical errors, and the incorrect sentence structure is distracting. However, as you read the book, you become engulfed in her tear jerk story and realize that the phrasing adds to

Book excerpt: As spiritual home of Che Guevara and arch-enemy of the United States for more than forty years, Cuba exerts a powerful hold over people's imaginations. The Revolution and its leader, Fidel Castro, have survived invasion, repeated external and internal crisis, and most astonishingly, economic collapse and political isolation. What is at the root of the continuity and success of the 'Revolution' and in what sense can it be termed a 'revolution'? This book is the first in-depth study of Cuba to examine its history and revolutionary transformation through the evolution of ideology and myth. Music, political campaigns, street and media propaganda, literature, cinema, and drama have served to establish a cubanista tradition, supported by powerful myths such as Che Guevara and Jose Marti, the New Man, youth, and an Afro-Cuban identity. Challenging preconceptions and conventional wisdoms about Cuba and its leadership, this book presents a remarkable portrait of the distinctive history of the island's culture. The interplay of history, revolutionary action, and ideology through myth and collective experience make this book essential reading for Cuban scholars, Latin American and US historians, political analysts and those generally interested in the history and future of Cuban political culture.

Book excerpt: This is a story of a village that came alive in the 1960s where young boys and girls got together in a place they called the big yard for the purpose of spending time doing creative things, such as building scooters, baskets, chains, carts; making hats from coconut branches, baskets; and engaging in many other crafts, including making monkeys, rabbits, birds, and elephants from dried coconuts. Dancing, singing, drumming, and storytelling were also part of the activities in the big yard. The main activity was playing soccer and learning karate. Ezra Clarke reflects on his personal experiences of being as always a leader, where he took initiatives. His involvement in the military was quite an asset. Dreams became passion, and fulfillment was joy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An affecting biography of the author of Anne of Green Gables is the first for young readers to include revelations about her last days and to encompass the complexity of a brilliant and sometimes troubled life. Once upon a time, there was a girl named Maud who adored stories. When she was fourteen years old, Maud wrote in her journal, “I love books. I hope when I grow up to be able to have lots of them.” Not only did Maud grow up to own lots of books, she wrote twenty-four of them herself as L. M. Montgomery, the world-renowned author of Anne of Green Gables. For many years, not a great deal was known about Maud’s personal life. Her childhood was spent with strict, undemonstrative grandparents, and her reflections on writing, her lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression, her “year of mad passion,” and her difficult married life remained locked away, buried deep within her unpublished personal journals. Through this revealing and deeply moving biography, kindred spirits of all ages who, like Maud, never gave up “the substance of things hoped for” will be captivated anew by the words of this remarkable woman.
