Book excerpt: A frantic phone call from the president of World Bank jars Carl Lukin and Ann Curlin out of a restful vacation on the Hood Canal in Washington State. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been stolen from the bank, and the bank president wants to hire Lukin Investigations to find the money before the news gets out, causing the bank to collapse. As Carl and Ann follow the money, they realize that the theft is connected to a body Carl had discovered in the Hood Canal. The money trail leads to the terrifying realization that it has been stolen to finance an international terrorist organization called Islams Fire. Carls first allegiance is to the bank, but he feels compelled to notify the CIA of the terrorist connection. Before they can be stopped, the terrorists attack the power grid on the West Coast, blacking out more than half the country. Working with both the FBI and the CIA, Carl and Ann track the leaders of Islams Fire around the world. Before they can stop them, though, they manage to wreak havoc, causing death and destruction all across the country. Murder, terror, bombings, and personal tragedy all force Carl to face the unthinkable in his urgent quest to stop Islams Fire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic conceptions of heaven and hell began in the seventh century as an early doctrinal innovation, but by the twelfth century, these notions had evolved into a highly formalized ideal of perfection. In tracking this transformation, Nerina Rustomji reveals the distinct material culture and aesthetic vocabulary Muslims developed to understand heaven and hell and identifies the communities and strategies of defense that took shape around the promise of a future world. Ideas of the afterworld profoundly influenced daily behaviors in Islamic society and gave rise to a code of ethics that encouraged abstinence from sumptuous objects, such as silver vessels and silk, so they could be appreciated later in heaven. Rustomji conducts a meticulous study of texts and images and carefully connects the landscape and social dynamics of the afterworld with earthly models and expectations. Male servants and female companions become otherworldly objects in the afterlife, and stories of rewards and punishment helped preachers promote religious reform. By employing material culture as a method of historical inquiry, Rustomji points to the reflections, discussions, and constructions that actively influenced Muslims' picture of the afterworld, culminating in a distinct religious aesthetic.

Book excerpt: Students and scholars of the Italian Renaissance easily fall under the spell of its achievements: its self-confident humanism, its groundbreaking scientific innovations, its ravishing artistic production. Yet many of the developments in Italian ceramics and glass were made possible by Italy's proximity to the Islamic world. The Arts of Fire underscores how central the Islamic influence was on this luxury art of the Italian Renaissance. Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Getty Museum on view from May 4 to August 5, 2004, The Arts of Fire demonstrates how many of the techniques of glass and ceramic production and ornamentation were first developed in the Islamic East between the eighth and twelfth centuries. These techniques - enamel and gilding on glass and tin-glaze and lustre on ceramics - produced brilliant and colourful decoration that was a source of awe and admiration, transforming these crafts, for the first time, into works of art and true luxury commodities. Essays by Catherine Hess, George Saliba, and Linda Komaroff demonstrate early modern Europe's debts to the Islamic world and help us better understand the interrelationships of cultures over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, Thierry Zarcone and Angela Hobart offer a vigorous and authoritative exploration of the link between Islam and shamanism in contemporary Muslim culture, examining how the old practice of shamanism was combined with elements of Sufism in order to adapt to wider Islamic society. Shamanism and Islam thus surveys shamanic practices in Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and the Balkans, to show how the Muslim shaman, like his Siberian counterpart, cultivated personal relations with spirits to help individuals through healing and divination. It explores the complexities and variety of rituals, involving music, dance and, in some regions, epic and bardic poetry, demonstrating the close links between shamanism and the various arts of the Islamic world. This is the first in-depth exploration of 'Islamized shamanism', and is a valuable contribution to the field of Islamic Studies, Religion, Anthropology, and an understanding of the Middle East more widely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Islam? Why do Muslims say Islam is peaceful? This book speaks not only to Muslims, but to all humankind as well, about the tragic situation in the world today. The remarkable words of Muhammad Raheem Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) address the endless conflicts in Jerusalem. His words show us what must be done to achieve true peace in Jerusalem, in the world, and in our hearts. “Everything is there, in Jerusalem. That is why everyone has fought over it. Those with faith have fought over it, and those without faith have fought over it. All they have found is destruction. No one who ruled there ever remained there. They ruled for just a few short days. Thus, we who are here now must think of this. Think of this, you who are here now. It can bring a great benefit. Everything can change.” – M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen “Jerusalem today demonstrates the proof of how places of worship to which everyone should be able to go in unity are turned into battlefields. All of us must understand the battlefield in which the proof has been revealed. All of us must understand this. We who have been born as human beings must realize the words of the prophets, the commandments of God, and their instructions of unity. No one who ruled in Jerusalem in the past is there anymore. Not one person who came to rule Egypt, Jerusalem, or the world is still there.” – M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen

Book excerpt: Hard Questions This Book Answers What is causing the backward transformation that Europeans are experiencing, bringing parts of Europe back to almost the same state of terrorism and loss of freedom when they were once shackled under NAZI and Communist occupations? What has happened to Christianity in Europe? How many churches are now standing empty, being turned into museums or concert halls, or being sold as mosques? What has happened to the demographics of Europeans now in such decline? How soon will original Europeans no longer exist, replaced by the souring populations of Muslims? What is the true history of Islam and the ideology driving their acts of terrorism? Why is this being whitewashed in the media and in European and American public schools as the schools are promoting pure Islam propaganda? How is the USA following the same pattern set for us in Europe with their massive influx of immigrants and refugees? Who are the various secular and non-secular groups driving the refugee program, and how much money is being made by them? What are the huge numbers of immigrants and refugees doing to our own country? How are small town and communities and their schools suffering with such a huge influx of migrants who do not share a common culture, language, traditions, or religion? What can we learn from this book before it is too late?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Vicchio believes that by understanding how much Muslim tradition overlaps with the biblical traditions of Judaism and Christianity, we might begin to expose a wedge of common ground on which understanding and respect might begin to be built. "Vicchio begins with a brief introduction sketching some fundamentals of Muslim history and culture, and clearing away some common misconceptions. His main goal, however, is to give us a detailed look at the treatment of biblical figures in the literature of Islam. The broad range of his research and presentation is startling. He begins with the Qur'an but continues on to the collected writing of the roughly two hundred years after Mohammed (Hadith, Sunnah, Akhbar) that came to be regarded as authoritative in the various traditions that developed in early Islam. He then traces the interest in these biblical figures on into modern treatments of the role of these figures in Muslim scholarship and how these figures are understood and used in the traditions of Islam yet today. "The result of Vicchio's scholarship and presentation will be a revelation to most Christian and Jewish readers. It has become somewhat commonplace to refer to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as the three Abrahamic faiths. This shows a beginning awareness of the beginnings of each of these three great religions, birthed in the Middle East, in a common ancestor, Abraham (Ibrahim). Abraham's faithfulness and his closeness to God make his a revered figure in each of these three great faiths, and for each Abraham is a beginning of the story of the particular relationship between God and the people of each of these religions." --from the Foreword
