L'islamisation, entendue comme la construction en ces territoires d'institutions et de sociétés islamiques, ne fut ni immédiate, ni homogène. Les variations locales du rythme et de la géographie de l'islamisation donnent à réfléchir sur les étapes et les modalités de ce long processus : conversions, socialisation des convertis, action « par le haut » des autorités politiques et religieuses, acculturation des populations... En effet, lors des premiers siècles suivant la conquête, ce ne fut pas une norme unifiée de l'Islam qui s'imposa mais plusieurs interprétations héritées des conflits dogmatiques éclos en Orient, diffusées dans l'Occident musulman puis infléchies par le contexte local, humain, social et culturel. L'arabisation, c'est-à-dire la diffusion écrite et orale de la langue arabe, constitue l'un des vecteurs de diffusion de l'Islam, mais non le seul, comme le prouve, entre autres, la permanence de la culture berbère jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Les treize contributions réunies dans ce volume, résultat d'un séminaire organisé en 2006-2007, réunissent historiens des textes et de la culture matérielle. Prenant en considération la diversité de cet Islam médiéval, elles permettent d'offrir une nouvelle approche de l'histoire des premiers siècles de l'Occident islamique.

This discovery led her to explore other translations into Latin of the Koran and other Islamic texts, to identify the work of the translators Hermann of Carinthia, Robert of Ketton and Mark of Toledo, and to depict the milieu in which this work was possible.

C'est le cas pour l'Occident musulman grâce à une pléiade d'éminents juristes dont les nombreuses consultations fourmillent de précieuses "realia" introuvables ailleurs. Ainsi en est-il du Kitāb al-Mi‘yār al-muġrib wa-l-ǧāmi‘ al-mu‘rib ‘an fatāwā ahl Ifrīqiya wa-l-Andalus wa-I-Maġrib faisant l'objet de cette première analyse thématique. Cet énorme corpus de consultations juridiques rendues par les juristes de l'Occident musulman médiéval compilé par al-Wansarisi (834 H/1430-1431-914 H/1508), contribue à faire connaître mieux le monde musulman. De cet ensemble de 12 volumes de l'édition lithographiée à Fès (fin XIXe siècle), dont une réédition récente a été effectuée, j'ai retenu 2144 fatwā-s offrant quelque intérêt historique. Elles ont été analysées aussi succinctement que possible et classées sous le nom des muftī-s qui les ont rendues. Elles sont donc presque toutes datables à un demi siècle près. Pour ce qui est du lieu, une certaine circonspection est de rigueur, sauf indication explicite, car les jurisconsultes se sont souvent déplacés au cours de leur existence et les plus célèbres sont interrogés de près ou de loin.Normalement chaque fatwā comporte deux parties distinctes et nettement séparées : une question débutant par l'expression "a été interrogé" (su’ila) et une réponse commençant par "a répondu" (aǧāba). Les plus intéressantes sur le plan historique, sont les fatwā-s désignant le nom du mufti soit intégralement ou du moins avec une précision suffisante pour éliminer toute ambiguïté, soit succinctement, d'une kunya ou d'une ethnique attribuable à un juriste connu, surtout s'il s'agit d'un personnage que le rapporteur de la fatwā a l'habitude de désigner de la sorte. Bien sûr, il est nécessaire de connaître les biographies des muftī-s, notamment leur patrie, leurs voyages, la date de leur naissance et surtout de leur mort. Pour la chronologie, l'obituaire des muftī-s fournit une précision suffisante ; d'autant plus qu'étant surtout consultés à l'âge mûr, on peut presque toujours négliger leur degré de longévité.
