Book excerpt: Islamic banking was started in the last quarter of the 20th century to cater the needs of Muslims around the world, although it is not limited to Muslims only. It has shown tremendous growth and expansion worldwide. The global volume of assets under the Islamic financial system has reached the figure of US$ 2.5 trillion by the end of 2018 (potential size is above US$ 9.0 trillion), depicting average yearly growth around 16% from 2010-18 [GIFR-2019]. Within eight years, the industry volume of assets is more than double. Islamic finance expands in allied financial sectors, including insurance, capital market operations (equity and Sukuk) and microfinancing in addition to the traditional banking sector. However, dominant share in assets under Islamic financial system is concentrated in the banking sector. According to IFSB (report-2019) share of banking in global Islamic financial services industry [volume 2.19 trillion] is 71.7%, followed by capital market operations with 27% [Sukuk 24.2% & Islamic funds 2.8%] and Islamic insurance (Takaful) 1.3%. Although it was started as merely an alternative option for Halal financing, now it has become a complete financial solutions industry and expanding day by day. There are multiple Sukuk [Islamic bonds] issues, including private and public sectors, alike. Islamic indices based on Shari'ah compliance filters are developed globally in Muslim and non-Muslim countries. Firms engaged in screening of Shari'ah compliant equities include DJIM, S&P, MSCI, FTSE and Bloomberg in addition to multiple country-specific Islamic indices. Important regions which contribute in global Islamic financial services industry include GCC (42.3%), Asia (28.2%), MENA-ex GCC (25.1%) and balance (4.4%) from rest of the world [IFSB-2018].This book is result of a decade of teaching Islamic banking & finance course to under graduation & Master in Business classes. For this, the thesis compares Islamic investment funds and hedge funds on the basis of different factors, trying to answer three sub questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Are there differences and/or similarities between the two? How can an investment portfolio including both be balanced? As will be seen throughout the thesis, Islamic investment funds provide a handfull of advantages over hedge funds, even enabling the former to outperform the latter. Hedge funds rely mainly on gaining advantage through market inefficiencies, hedging the market risk through short-term opportunities. This construction puts the fund manager into a high risk position with high profit potential. Despite investment restrictions under Islamic law, a fund manager is not prohibited from facilitating hedge funds by these restrictions. The main difference is that Islamic investments offer more risk control by cooperative arrangements. This characteristic enables an investor to cover the risk of hedge funds by investing in Islamic investment funds. Book excerpt: Defining social investing and its boundaries is a challenging task, since no general consensus exists about the 'ideal' characteristics that socially responsible investments (SRIs) should possess. Some faith-based investments, for instance, Islamic funds, are often associated with SRIs, even if there are some inconsistencies in the investment decisions. This paper explores whether Islamic investments can be included into the category of SRIs or whether they exhibit characteristics that would more fittingly classify them in a separate investment family. To answer this research question, we focus on equity investments from both a qualitative and a quantitative point of view. The first part of the study discusses and compares the screens generally used to build socially responsible (SR) and Islamic portfolios, while the quantitative section of our study analyses portfolios' characteristics using relevant European indices as a proxy for SRI and Islamic funds. Covering the period from 2001 to 2011, we use style analysis to investigate the sector and country composition of SR and Islamic portfolios. In addition, through a cointegration analysis on FTSE indices, we show that the econometric profile of the FTSE Islamic series exhibits peculiar portfolio characteristics compared to conventional and SRI indices. Although the academic literature has extensively analysed SRIs and some authors have focused on Islamic investments, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to investigate the qualitative and econometric differences between SRIs and Islamic investments.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Prior to the coming into existence of Islamic finance, Islamic equity fund investment was almost non-existent in Malaysia. With the passage of enabling legislation in 1983, awareness and acceptance of Islamic finance as a competitive alternative to conventional finance emerged, as did interest in Islamic equity funds (IEFs) albeit very subdued compared to its conventional counterpart. Given that Islam constitutes the religious majority in Malaysia, expectations that the growth and development of IEFs are associated with individual religious norms, value orientations and ethical behaviour, has not been tested empirically in previous studies. One way of addressing this absence is by examining the investment behaviour of IEF participants. This is pursued by studying behaviour under conditions of competing alternatives in a different Malaysian economic setting. This strategy is triangulated from a number of perspectives: from observations in psychology focusing on how individual behaviour and motivations shape investment decisions; the influence of shariah ethical considerations; risk/return expectations; equity fund management and performance; and, from behaviour exhibited in current and expected asset/equity portfolio construction. Traditional investment theory is unable to explain how ethical investors behave the way they do often exhibiting behaviour inconsistent with choice optimisation and rational decision-making. Moreover, in an Islamic finance setting, prescriptive shariah parameters and non-financial attributes are perceived to impact investment behaviour in ways not fully understood. If individuals are assumed to behave rationally (as neoclassical theory suggests), then given ethical imposts, Islamic investors would consistently make sub-optimal and irrational decisions since choice is not fully exercised. Consequently, equity and asset portfolios will not be fully optimised between competing alternatives. Similar arguments are raised against conventional ethical investors on the basis that negatively screening out profitable equity stocks (through ethical concerns) result in portfolio under-performance (Schwartz, 2003). Does this argument hold for Islamic investors and IEFs as well? Research associated with conventional socially responsible investment (SRI) suggests the non-financial components of investors utility functions have much to do with investment behaviour the dynamic effect of which ultimately contributes in shaping the growth and direction of SRI funds themselves (Domini & Kinder, 1986). Such observations cannot be inferred about Islamic Equity Investment (IEI) since there is a paucity of research and very few studies in which the influence of individual behavioural attributes on investment has been adequately researched. Pollard and Samers (2007) argue this dearth in research has resulted in Islamic finance being 2under-theorised3. Moreover, as the literature review indicates, IEI research has been unidirectional it focuses almost exclusively at quantitative analysis of equity fund performance and risk/return comparative analysis. This research seeks to redress this gap in the literature.
