There are two factors that will influence the performance of Islamic Unit Trust funds which are risk and return. The performance of both funds will be evaluated based on standard performance measures known as Adjusted Sharpe Indices. As to conduct the study, the collected data were from January 2002 to December 2012 by using quarterly basis which retrieve from secondary data of Islamic and Conventional Unit Trust funds. In order to examine the influences of risk and return towards the performance of Islamic Unit Trust funds, the method used is regression method to analyze the data collected. The dependent variables will be the performance of Islamic Unit Trust funds while the independent variables are risk and return. The expected result of this research is to have the significant relationship.

Book excerpt: This research studies the Islamic unit trust funds, as one of the important components in the Islamic Capital Market in Malaysia, from the Shari'ah perspective. It examines three major aspects that differentiate the Islamic unit trust funds from the conventional funds. These aspects are the applicable contracts to the Islamic unit trust funds, the stocks screening process in Islamic unit trust funds and the purification of Islamic unit trust funds. This research employs the analytical method to analyze the data and information obtained from various sources. Samples of Islamic unit trust funds investment's contract, trust deeds and prospectuses are scrutinized in order to identify the applied Islamic principle in the Islamic unit trust funds' contract. Various contracts in Islamic law are then measured to the principles applied. As to the stocks screening process in the Islamic unit trust funds investment in Malaysia, data and information obtained are examined and compared to similar processes in other financial market practices across the globe such as the FTSE and Dow Jones Islamic Market. The principle of purification as applied in the Islamic unit trust funds investment in the Malaysian industry is studied and compared to the practices of the purification process in other jurisdictions. The finding of this research shows that in terms of the contract applied to the Islamic unit trust funds, no specific Islamic contracts are mentioned in the offering of the Islamic unit trust funds. However, the wakalah principle is the most suitable contract which can be associated with the offering of the funds. The screening process in the Malaysian practice, on the other hand, is more lenient compared to the FTSE and Dow Jones Islamic Market. As to the purification of the Islamic unit trust funds' income, the applied principle is that the investors have to carry out the purification process by means of zakat or charitable funds.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the NAV of the Islamic equity unit trust funds and macroeconomic variables, namely consumer price index, Industrial production index, three-month treasury bill rate, money supply (M3) and crude oil price as well as the recent global financial crisisin Malaysian financial industry. The analysis based on monthly closing price for a sample of 68 equity unit trust fundsovera period of 6 years, from January 2004 to December 2009, where the years from 2007 to 2009 are consideredas crisis period.Multiple regression and analysis model has been adopted for analyzingthe relationship. The study also compares the performance of Islamic and conventional equity unit trust funds for Malaysian capital market. The major findings of the study show that, CPI, IPI, M3, and crude oil price have significant relationship with the NAV of the Islamic equity unit trust funds in Malaysian capital market. In addition, the current global financial crisis records the highest positive relationship with the NAV of the Islamic unit trust funds. However, the three-month treasury bill rate has no statistically significant relationship with the NAV of the Islamic equity unit trust funds. The results also reveal that Islamic equity unit trust funds achieve higher capital appreciation than the conventional equity unit trust funds. This study facilitates the investors in taking effective investment decisions by estimating the future direction of NAV of the Islamic equity unit trust funds using the expected trend in the macroeconomic variables such as CPI, IPI and Oil Price as well as the effect of the recent global financial crisis. Therefore, the study suggests that macroeconomic policy should be designed keeping in view the response of the Islamic unit trust industry as the efficient market respond to the new information. In addition, the empirical result of this study also will present the investors with new prospective of selecting the type of funds as the part of their portfolio selection, whether Islamic equity fund or conventional equity fund.
