Book excerpt: Islam is the religion of the Muslims, which was started by Mohammad and whose religious book is the Koran. A Muslim is someone whose religion is Islam. The Jews, who persecuted and killed Jesus Christ, did not know that satan had deceived them; but they thought that they were working and fighting for God. This is the same thing that is happening with the Muslims now. The Muslims do not know that satan has deceived them; but they believe that they are on the right course; and they are ready to fight for God in deception. Islam is a religion which openly challenges Christianity. But let us love them enough to go and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which will save their souls from Eternal Condemnation in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone, to them. We must not hate them no matter what they do. Remember that the Bible tells us to love our enemies.

Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. The Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria are exceptional for the copresence among them of three religious traditions: Islam, Christianity, and the indigenous orisa religion. In this comparative study, at once historical and anthropological, Peel explores the intertwined character of the three religions and the dense imbrication of religion in all aspects of Yoruba history up to the present. For over 400 years, the Yoruba have straddled two geocultural spheres: one reaching north over the Sahara to the world of Islam, the other linking them to the Euro-American world via the Atlantic. These two external spheres were the source of contrasting cultural influences, notably those emanating from the world religions. However, the Yoruba not only imported Islam and Christianity but also exported their own orisa religion to the New World. Before the voluntary modern diaspora that has brought many Yoruba to Europe and the Americas, tens of thousands were sold as slaves in the New World, bringing with them the worship of the orisa. Peel offers deep insight into important contemporary themes such as religious conversion, new religious movements, relations between world religions, the conditions of religious violence, the transnational flows of contemporary religion, and the interplay between tradition and the demands of an ever-changing present. In the process, he makes a major theoretical contribution to the anthropology of world religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All too often, a Christian response to Islam is rooted in antagonism and steeped in defensiveness and fear. Yet the church is not called to engage in a battle with Islam in order to conquer Muslims, and when we, as Christians, wield apologetics like a weapon and shroud the message of Christ’s sacrifice in the armour of polemics, we destroy the credibility of our witness even as we seek to save the lost. Bernhard Reitsma invites the church to rediscover a Christ-like approach to Islam – an approach that roots itself in love, vulnerability, and fearless embrace. Far from ignoring the complex challenges faced by Christians living in Muslim-majority nations – or in Western countries where Islam is on the rise – Reitsma addresses practical concerns such as persecution, political power, the nation of Israel, and contextualization, all within a thoroughly biblical and Christ-centered framework. Reitsma reminds us that the church’s calling is not to defend Christendom but to reveal the glory of Christ. To that end, let us lay down our weapons, take off our armour, and introduce our Muslim brothers and sisters to the vulnerable, unconditional love of Christ.

It is a fascinating study by an engaging and challenging scholar and activist of our time.

Sarrió Cucarella provides an exposition and analysis of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Qarāfī’s (d. 684/1285) Splendid Replies to Insolent Questions (al-Ajwiba al-fākhira ‘an al-as’ila al-fājira). Written in response to an apology for Christianity by the Melkite Bishop of Sidon, Paul of Antioch, the Splendid Replies is among the most extensive and most important medieval Muslim refutations of Christianity, and the primary significance of this study is to provide detailed access to its argumentation and intellectual context for the first time in a western language. Moreover, the Introduction and Conclusion creatively situate the work within the challenges of modern-day Christian-Muslim dialogue.

Book excerpt: Max Weber and Islam is a major effort by Islamic-studies specialists to reexamine and appraise Max Weber's perspectives on Islam and its historical development. Eight specialists on Islam and two sociologists explore many dimensions of Weber's comments on Islam, along with Weber's conceptual framework. The volume's introduction links the discussions to contemporary issues and debates. Wolfgang Schluchter reconstructs Weber's conceptual apparatus as it applies to Islam and its historical development. In subsequent chapters, Islamic specialists consider such major topics as the developmental history of Islam, Islamic fundamentalism, Islamic reform, Islamic law and capitalism, secularization in Islam, as well as the value of attempting to apply Weber's concept of sects to Islam. While some authors find flaws in Weber's factual knowledge of Islam, they also find considerable merit in the kinds of questions Weber raised. Contributors to the volume include highly respected contemporary international scholars of Islam: Ira Lapidus, Nehemia Levtzion, Richard M. Eaton, Peter Hardy, Rudolph Peters, Barbara Metcalf, Francis Robinson, Patricia Crone, Michael Cook, and S.N. Eisenstadt. Toby Huff's introduction not only knits the thematics of the separate essays together but adds its own stresses while engaging the contributors in dialogue and debate about fundamental issues. This acute collective analysis establishes a new benchmark for understanding Weber and Islam. This book also provides an up-to-date overview of the developmental history of many aspects of Islam. A major reappraisal of the entire span of Max Weber's sociological thought on Islam, this book will appeal to a wide range of scholars and laymen interested in the Islamic world. It will be of particular interest to sociologists specializing in religion and Middle East area specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam came into being around AD 600 as a monotheistic, Abrahamic religion revealed through the Prophet Muhammad. Awareness of Islam in the West has grown dramatically in the twenty-first century, but there remains much misunderstanding of the interrelationship between Islam and Christianity, both their commonalities and differences. Andrei Younis elucidates esoteric reasons behind the emergence of Islam from the perspective of Steiner’s Spiritual Science. He draws on more than thirty years of studying Steiner’s works, as well as on first-hand knowledge gained from living in various Islamic countries and cultures. His purpose is to reconcile the origins, beliefs, and meanings of Islam and Christianity. Looking closely at the history and various manifestations of Islam, Younis discusses the spiritual impulses behind Islamic beliefs and practices, grounding his commentary in both the Koran and the Bible. Comprehending this anthroposophic perspective on the emergence of Islam is key to understanding why Islam manifests as it does today. Whereas this book will be enlightening and even surprising to most open-minded Western readers, it is not meant to be a foundation for beliefs (or non-belief), but as a springboard for thought and new avenues of understanding and compassion in a dangerous time.

That is the intriguing question Peter Kreeft seeks to answer in these imaginative conversations at Boston College. An articulate and engaging Muslim student named 'Isa challenges the Christian students and professors he meets on issues ranging from prayer and worship to evolution and abortion, from war and politics to the nature of spiritual struggle and spiritual submission.

Book excerpt: We have rapidly grown used to the idea, particularly since the declaration of a worldwide war on terrorism, that between Islam and the West there exists a deep historical and ideological gulf. Christopher J. Walker turns such accepted views on their head and paints instead a picture of two belief systems that have a long history of toleration and mutual influence. Indeed, Islam has given a great deal to civilisation: essentially modern notions of free enquiry, rational experimentation, rational experimentation and the independence of science from religious authority are legacies of the Islamic world. Islam and the West is a thought-provoking study covering some of the cardinal encounters between Islamic and Western countries.

Book excerpt: This volume serves to refute the popularly-held belief that Christians and Muslims worship the same God, showing that Christianity and Islam radically disagree on the nature and attributes of God. It also argues that they present Jesus in contradictory terms regarding his divinity and the historicity of the crucifixion. Additionally, the two religions have fundamentally different understandings of human nature, sin, and scripture. In honestly pointing out the reasons why these great religions cannot be reconciled, this book will appeal to theologians, as well as educated Christian and Muslim laypersons.

Book excerpt: No previous full-scale study has been undertaken so far to study the polemical writings of the Muslim reformist Muòhammad Rashåid Riòdåa (1865-1935) and his associates in his well-known journal al-Manåar (The Lighthouse). The book focuses on the dynamicsof Muslim understanding of Christianity during the late 19th and the early 20th century in the light of al-Manåar's sources of knowledge, and its answers to the social, political and theological aspects of missionary movements in the Muslim World of Riòdåa's age. The basis of the analysis encompasses the voluminous publications by Riòdåa and other Manåarists in his journal. Besides, it makes use of newly-discovered materials, including Riòdåa's private papers, and some other remaining personal archives of some of his associates.
