Book excerpt: STATEMENT BY THE AUTHOR In the Name of the Most Exalted This book is a commentary on the Commander of the Faithful’s (‘a) appointment letter of Malik al-Ashtar as Governor of Egypt. It is being presented for the second time with additions and other advantages. A series of discussions on this subject was held by me in the presence of a group of esteemed scholars of religion at the Qum Theological Seminary’s Department of Islamic Promotion. This is a composite report of those discussions. Its composer is Hujjat Al-Islam Shaykh Husayn Karimi-Zanjani, a prolific writer, erudite clergyman, and learned scholar of the Qum Theological Seminary. He has a major share in this book as he has added interesting topics, headings, and changed some of the comments. While expressing my admiration and gratitude for his valuable services, I implore the Great God to acknowledge them and grant us the favor of greater services. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Service of mankind prepares a person for leadership - Ali Ibne Abi TalibThis book is a collection of Imam Ali Ibne Abi Talib's policy statements on the role and responsibilities of political leadership for good governance. Important administrative policy initiatives taken by Imam Ali and his guidelines for effective government as advocated in his writings and lectures to various governors and senior officials are the primarily focus of this work. The work benefits from extensive research sources and a reference is provided for every statement. Language has been kept simple while remaining loyal to the original tone, as authors have young readers in mind also. Imam Ali was both an educationist and a practitioner. His writings and speeches, especially during his time as Caliph (656 - 661 A.D), speak volumes about his progressive political vision. A just order founded on rational thinking, tolerance and equality was his ultimate goal. Special emphasis on the need for education was another critical pillar of his philosophy. He was looking much beyond his age and hence he built the intellectual foundations of a model government for future. The emphasis was on nurturing leaders, humane and accountable, who would establish institutions and focus primarily on the wellbeing of the ordinary people. In that sense his teachings are valuable for any student of politics and government anywhere in the world. Table of Contents: Preface Chapter 1: Policy Making Guidelines for Good Governance Chapter 2: On Establishing an Effective Justice System Chapter 3: Qualities of an Effective Leader Chapter 4: Economic Affairs: Taxation and Development Chapter 5: Importance of Education and Knowledge Chapter 6: Principles of Administration Introduced by Ali Ibne Abi Talib as a Caliph Research Sources Notes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early twentieth-century treatise by the esteemed Ayatullah Aqa Sheikh Muhammad Hussein Na'ini is translated along with the 1955 Persian commentary on the treatise by the Iranian Ayatullah Sayyid Mahmud Taleqani. It takes into account two types of governance: the first a legitimate guardianship and the second a necessarily corrupted monopoly. Ayatullah Na'ini addresses the foundations of 'truth', the limitation of power during the occultation of the Imam, the function of constitutional governance, the nature of parliament and parliamentary representation, and the forces of despotism and how to overcome them. The treatise is a discussion of Islamic governance and its relationship to the Shia Ithna 'Ashari doctrine of Imammat, based on two basic principles: preservation of the domestic order and infrastructure, and safeguarding from foreign intervention or, in the lexicon of Islamic scholars, 'preserving the essence of Islam'. In addition to clarifying the often complex and at times obscure passages in Na'ini's treatise, Taleqani's commentary offers the view of a key leader of the 'Islamic' revolution of 1978-79 on Islam and governance.

This work cites the practical implementations and manifestation of those teachings to reveal their relevance and impact on people's life and wellbeing. Given therein are examples of the teachings and practices of the Prophet of Islam when he was the head of state in the city of Medina for a decade. The author cites and references the practices of Prophet Muhammad and Imam Ali because they are the embodiment and the essence of the teachings of Islam. As part of those teachings are practices such as forbearance, forgiveness, love, compassion, tolerance and fairness to friends and foes alike. Social justice and economic prosperity are amongst foremost in the policies of these two great Islamic leaders, ensuring the people's freedom, dignity and welfare. Book excerpt: This volume, the first of six to be published, studies fundamental values of Islam, along with the nature of rights and the responsibilities in a general context. The authors analyse the development of social thought and morality in Islam, and ways in which they are enforced through the family and education. Particular attention is paid to the status of women, children, youth and the socially excluded. Several chapters broach specially Islamic approaches to economics, government and justice. A world religion since its inception in the seventh century A.D., Islam is today seeking vigorous answers to contemporary problems through its multi-faceted history. Issues of poverty and wealth, inequality and demands for political expression, and respect for diversity in a difficult world of conformity are dealt with in this series. The study is organized along thematic rather than chronological lines and thus it is not necessary to read the volumes in order. Volume II is in fact the first to have been published. Volume IV is forthcoming end 2002, volume V mid 2003 and volumes III and VI in 2004. This volume, the first of six to be published, studies fundamental values of Islam, along with the nature of rights and the responsibilities in a general context. Book excerpt: Dr. Nakshawani in the following work not only corrects the widespread misconception that the Shi’i intellectual tradition despises and curses all Companions, but also clarifies the reason for which some Companions were considered people of Paradise in the Shi’i (and usually the Sunni) tradition. In a few places, the author notes reasons for which the Shi’i tradition does not venerate certain Companions. Discussing controversial history as it relates to Companions and the ahl al-bayt remains a difficult enterprise, where methods and premises, let alone conclusions, substantially differ from scholar to scholar. As an expert of the Shi’i tradition, Dr. Nakshawani presents relevant Shi’i narratives for non-specialists who would otherwise be unaware of them. Thus, the following biographies fill a gap in knowledge about Companions not only revered in the Shi’i tradition, but according to the collective memory of pro-Alid Sunni and Shi’i authors, granted Paradise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of al-Ṭabarī's history deals with the traumatic breakup of the Muslim community following the assassination of the Caliph 'Uthman. It begins with the first seriously contested succession to the caliphate, that of ʿAlī, and proceeds inexorably through the rebellion of 'A'ishah, T'alhah, and al-Zubayr, to the Battle of the Camel, the first time Muslim army faced Muslim army. It thus deals with the very first violent response to the two central problems of Muslim history: who is the rightful leader, and which is the true community? It is a section with the weightiest implications for the Muslim interpretation of history, wide open to special pleading. There are the Shi'a who depict ʿAlī as a spiritual leader fighting against false accusations and the worldly ambitious. Conversely, there are those who would depict him or his followers in a negative light. There are also the 'Abbasid historians, who, though anti-Umayyad, must balance a reverence for the Prophet's household (ahl al-bayt) with a denunciation of 'Alid antiestablishmentarianism. All these points of view, and more, are represented in al-Ṭabarī's compilation, illustrating the difficulty the Muslim community as a whole has faced in coming to terms with these disastrous events.
