Book Synopsis War and Peace with the Beasts by : Brian Griffith
Download or read book War and Peace with the Beasts written by Brian Griffith and published by Wood Lake Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The animals that one culture likes are often hated in the next, and it seems that the animals themselves know it well. Basically, one culture’s animal partner is often another culture’s nightmare from hell. “Naturally, I wonder how relations between people and animals got to be so different around the world. How did it happen that some cultures treat bats, snakes, wolves, or ravens as embodiments of evil, while other people treat the same animals with affection or even reverence?” Our wars with the animals go way back. Beyond the light cast by our prehistoric campfires, the eyes glowing in the night seemed to represent a great hostile force. As we began to cultivate crops and husband a few favoured animals, we generally regarded other creatures as threats to our chosen few. Using the logic of war, we sought to maximize the populations of certain creatures, and the destruction of others. In the past, that war effort was our great crusade for the advancement of civilization as we knew it. The war had a frontier, a front line, and an ongoing battle on the home front. Expanding outward from our various cradles of civilization, we progressively “tamed” the forests and grasslands, converting them to monocrop plantations or pastures. Then we had to defend our monocrops from encroaching weeds, insects, and wild animals. In this immediately engaging, story- and fact-filled page-turner of a book, Brian Griffith looks at the range of ways we relate to animals and the stories we tell about them. He asks how we choose whether buddyhood, fearful respect, businesslike predation, or genocidal war is the most appropriate response to each species we meet. He watches how our treatment of “inferior beings” affects our treatment of “inferior people,” and traces some of the chain reactions we unleash when we try to weed out species we don’t like. “Without much hope of making animals fit my personal preferences,” he writes, “I wonder how good our relations can get.”

Book Synopsis The Book of the Jihad of 'Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106) by : Niall Christie
Download or read book The Book of the Jihad of 'Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106) written by Niall Christie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1105, six years after the first crusaders from Europe conquered Jerusalem, a Damascene Muslim jurisprudent named ’Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106) publicly dictated an extended call to the military jihad (holy war) against the European invaders. Entitled Kitab al-Jihad (The Book of the Jihad), al-Sulami’s work both summoned his Muslim brethren to the jihad and instructed them in the manner in which it ought to be conducted, covering topics as diverse as who should fight and be fought, treatment of prisoners and plunder, and the need for participants to fight their own inner sinfulness before turning their efforts against the enemy. Al-Sulami’s text is vital for a complete understanding of the Muslim reaction to the crusades, providing the reader with the first contemporary record of Muslim preaching against the crusaders. However, until recently only a small part of the text has been studied by modern scholars, as it has remained for the most part an unedited manuscript. In this book Niall Christie provides a complete edition and the first full English translation of the extant sections (parts 2, 8, 9 and 12) of the manuscript of al-Sulami’s work, making it fully available to modern readers for the first time. These are accompanied by an introductory study exploring the techniques that the author uses to motivate his audience, the precedents that influenced his work, and possible directions for future study of the text. In addition, an appendix provides translations of jihad sermons by Ibn Nubata al-Fariqi (d. 985), a preacher from Asia Minor whose rhetorical style was highly influential in the development of al-Sulami’s work.

Book Synopsis The Islamic Antichrist Myth by : Charles Bassett
Download or read book The Islamic Antichrist Myth written by Charles Bassett and published by Positron Books LLC. This book was released on 2020-06-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate among Christians continues to rage: Exactly where will the Antichrist come from? And to what religion will he belong? Over the last ten years, an increasing number of pastors and prophecy experts have abandoned their support for the traditional "Roman Antichrist" view and are now promoting the Islamic Antichrist Theory. The Beast of the Apocalypse, they now say, will rise out of Islam-somewhere in the Middle East-and he will conquer the world with a vast army of unstoppable Muslim warriors. In support of this conjecture, proponents of the Islamic Antichrist Theory point to several pertinent facts. For example:?The Bible repeatedly refers to the Antichrist by Arabic titles, such as King of Babylon, King of Tyre, the Assyrian, etc.?In agreement with Revelation 20:4, Islam requires the beheading of those who will not submit to their leader's authority.?The Greek letters for 666-according to some experts-actually stand for: "In the name of Allah, we will make war."Yet despite all these "facts," the Bible clearly states that the Antichrist's homeland lies to the northwest of Israel-a region completely devoid of Arabic nations. Indeed, the principle of divine retribution requires that God take vengeance on a Roman Caesar, as payment for Rome's execution of Jesus in 32 A.D. and its destruction of Jerusalem a short time later. Here, in The Islamic Antichrist Myth, Charles K. Bassett examines fifteen of the most popular arguments in support of the Islamic Antichrist Theory, and patiently explains why each one is wrong. Once this myth is dispelled, says Bassett, the only logical conclusion is that the Antichrist must be a "Roman," and he must come out of Europe.

Book Synopsis Islam without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty by : Mustafa Akyol

This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A delightfully original take on…the prospects for liberal democracy in the broader Islamic Middle East.”—Matthew Kaminski, Wall Street Journal As the Arab Spring threatens to give way to authoritarianism in Egypt and reports from Afghanistan detail widespread violence against U.S. troops and women, news from the Muslim world raises the question: Is Islam incompatible with freedom? In Islam without Extremes, Turkish columnist Mustafa Akyol answers this question by revealing the little-understood roots of political Islam, which originally included both rationalist, flexible strains and more dogmatic, rigid ones. Though the rigid traditionalists won out, Akyol points to a flourishing of liberalism in the nineteenth-century Ottoman Empire and the unique “Islamo-liberal synthesis” in present-day Turkey. As he powerfully asserts, only by accepting a secular state can Islamic societies thrive. Islam without Extremes offers a desperately needed intellectual basis for the reconcilability of Islam and liberty.

Download or read book Apocalypse Secrets written by John Able and published by John Able Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apocalypse Secrets: Baha'i Interpretation of the Book of Revelation with 60 illustrations is a fresh provocative Parallel Interpretation of the Apocalypse or Book of Revelation. The author, John Able MD, is a retired intensive-care physician. He uses Baha'i Writings that interpret parts of the Apocalypse to decode it as a global tale of three millennia now passing through four centuries of the events of religious end-times. It is a tale of the struggles of seven Empires and seven Faiths, of their materialism and militarism, and the resulting mess into which the world is now crescendoing furiously and fast. These events center on the apocalyptic war waging between the Revelation beast of Muslim Militarism that drives the Middle East and the Revelation Babylon of Malignant Materialism that drives the Christian West. The fall of both is inevitable, with economic crises spiraling the globe into a paralytic depression, now triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. The good news is that spiritual economics will arise and our painful end times into wonderful beginning times. Apocalypse Secrets is a profound and astonishing work in biblical exegesis-a real tour de force as a strikingly original, scholarly, remarkably holistic, comprehensive, and rationally consistent interpretation of the Book of Revelation. Able intelligently probes and penetrates many of the great religious mysteries, and cogently argues that Revelation extends far beyond its strictly Middle East Christic origin. It transcends religious dogma, bridges religious faiths, and explains nineteen hundred years of troubling events in Christianity and Islam with amazing clarity and prescience. It is amazingly detailed and thorough. The author's stylish rhetoric is colorful and alive and his book beautifully crafted and researched, making for an engaging, enlightening, and thought-provoking read. In the end, a scholarly Translation Section decodes original Greek and Hebrew sources. Its strikingly lively translation sticks to the intention of the Greek original. It provides an authoritative base for his distinctive Parallel Interpretation. For anyone striving to penetrate the hidden secrets of the Apocalypse, Apocalypse Secrets is a must reading. This exceedingly interesting book will influence many future works about the subject and become a template of understanding and peace for all. After they read it, people who are interested in prophecy will never look at the Book of Revelation the same again. Visit www.apocalypse.info for more.
