Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam means "peace" and "submission to God." With its ethical system of instruction for a balanced life based on faith and reason, how did this "religion of peace" come to be feared? After the 9/11 tragedy, Islam was judged by many in the West to be a hub of terrorism and a threat to world peace. People everywhere voiced concern over its concepts of war and Jihad. Ashraf traces these and related concepts from their inception in Qur'anic injunctions and the Prophet's precepts to their current interpretation, evaluating them in their spiritual, moral, juridical, and cultural contexts. Misunderstandings about Islam lie at the core of much bitterness and violence. With no central authority to definitively interpret its teachings, misconceptions regarding Islam's ideology of war and peace abound. To label Islam as militant is to misinterpret jihad as simply a call to war and to ignore its laws governing warfare, which emphasize restraint as far as possible. Islamic Philosophy of War and Peace explains the spirit of Islam, its mandate for peace, and what the pluralistic notion of jihad stands for in the hope that clearing up ambiguities will foster peaceful relations between Muslims and the rest of the world.

This book was released on 2002-12-30 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today the world stands in an imperative need for a code of universal teachings, such as Islam (Peace). It is our foremost duty to depict the teachings of Islam in its true perspective. In Europe, America, and even in India, there are still prevalent gross misconceptions and wrong notions about Islam and also about the Holy Prophet of Islam. This book contains comments, quotations, and writings from hundreds of eminent scholars, writers, and thinkers of the Non-Muslim world to show the real truth about Islam and its Prophet. As an American lady converted to Islam remarked, "The Muslims of to-day do not know the real meaning of Islam and the work life, example and precepts of their Prophet. Most of the to-day Muslims are living in gross ignorance of the true teachings of Islam." This book is needed at this juncture of the World when it is torn into blocks by ideologies and there is an impending danger of the annihilation of the whole human race and its beautiful civilization by nuclear, chemical, and other weapons of mass destruction. Today a nations status and existence should depend on superior ideology and not on arms and ammunition. Islam alone can supply this all-comprehensive superior ideology to be applied to the pressing problems of the present day World. Absolute faith in one and only one humanity earnestly taught by Islam can alone save the World and the modern civilization from degradation, destruction, and utter ruination. Islam and its holy prophet have a message to the whole mankind. The message is: The world in which we have our beings does not belong to us. It is a God's trust to men and women. All the powers, all the greatness that mankind posses should be ever used, employed as God's trust and according to this law and commandments. Men and women must not think themselves as master of all things and should not use them arbitrarily. They must think themselves as divine instruments to carry out God's trust faithfully and justly. Islam enjoys one universal brotherhood of all human beings and one humanity. This is what the present enlightened and think World is seeking as a new comradeship, a universal fellowship, a World community, a deeper understanding and peace above all. Another purpose of this book is to present Europe and America and to the Non-Muslim world a real and true picture of Islam and its Holy Prophet as told by their own people in order to remove them from the mind of the Western people of these prejudiced wrong notions, erroneous biases, and obsession against Islam and its founder. The liberal attitude of Islam to freedom of belief and thought is one of the fundamental tenets of Islam which established rights of human beings more than fourteen hundred years ago as part of creed as a universal message to humanity. This message is of utmost importance to the present state of human development. If the present day Muslims can intelligently appreciate the message of Islam and truly act thereupon, they would be able to regain confidence in themselves and contribute effectively to the peace and happiness of mankind. This is another purpose of this book. If the Western and Non-Muslim people could appreciate the teachings of Islam and its Holy Prophet, they would see the truth and would be glad to cooperate with the Muslims in the up-hill task of making this World a heaven for peaceful, prosperous, and brotherly living and for that noble purpose to form a universal brotherhood of all mankind. I express my obligation and gratitude to those from whose books and writings quotations have been made.

This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manifesto of Islam, an Exposition of Islam as the Inevitable World Ideology, of the Future The present crisis in world affairs, threatening the total collapse of civilization and even the total extinction of the human rice, is forcing mankind to search for a remedy. Of late their interest in religion has suddenly revived. Is religion, properly understood, the only refuge of mankind from these impending calamities! They arc searching for an answer to this question. On the other hand the Muslims arc claiming openly and repeatedly before the whole world that Islam is the only ideology that can permanently unite the human race, establish a lasting peace on earth and carry man to that highest stage of his mental, moral, material and spiritual evolution of which there is a promise in the potentialities of his nature. This devolves upon the Muslims the responsibility to tell the world what Islam is, how it differs from other religions, what are the intellectual foundations of its claims, what arc its aims and objects and how it intends to realize them. "The Manifesto of Islam" is an endeavour to provide a brief answer to these questions. The word "manifesto" has been generally used for a declaration, by a sovereign, a state or a body of individuals, making known past actions and motives of actions announced as forthcoming. But since the appearance, a century ago, of the 'Communists Manifesto' as an instrument of world-wide propagation of Communism leading ultimately to the emergence of that ideology as a great political power in the world - this word has acquired a new significance, as a statement setting forth the historical bases, the fundamental principles and the expected achievements of an ideology demanding a world-wide recognition. I am using the word only in this latter sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book addresses the question of how God can providentially govern apparently ungovernable randomness. Medieval theologians confidently held that God is provident, that is, God is the ultimate cause of or is responsible for everything that happens. However, scientific advances since the 19th century pose serious challenges to traditional views of providence. From Darwinian evolution to quantum mechanics, randomness has become an essential part of the scientific worldview. An interdisciplinary team of Muslim, Christian and Jewish scholars—biologists, physicists, philosophers and theologians—addresses questions of randomness and providence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since at least the attacks of September 11, 2001, one of the most pressing political questions of the age has been whether Islam is hostile to religious freedom. Daniel Philpott examines conditions on the ground in forty-seven Muslim-majority countries today and offers an honest, clear-eyed answer to this urgent question. It is not, however, a simple answer. From a satellite view, the Muslim world looks unfree. But, Philpott shows, the truth is much more complex. Some one-fourth of Muslim-majority countries are in fact religiously free. Of the other countries, about forty percent are governed not by Islamists but by a hostile secularism imported from the West, while the other sixty percent are Islamist. The picture that emerges is both honest and hopeful. Yes, most Muslim-majority countries are lacking in religious freedom. But, Philpott argues, the Islamic tradition carries within it "seeds of freedom," and he offers guidance for how to cultivate those seeds in order to expand religious freedom in the Muslim world and the world at large. It is an urgent project. Religious freedom promotes goods like democracy and the advancement of women that are lacking in the Muslim-majority world and reduces ills like civil war, terrorism, and violence. Further, religious freedom is simply a matter of justice--not an exclusively Western value, but rather a universal right rooted in human nature. Its realization is critical to the aspirations of religious minorities and dissenters in Muslim countries, to Muslims living in non-Muslim countries or under secular dictatorships, and to relations between the West and the Muslim world. In this thoughtful book, Philpott seeks to establish a constructive middle ground in a fiery and long-lasting debate over Islam.
