This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L'ISLAM ET LA MONARCHIE CONSTITUENT LES PILIERS DU SYSTEME POLITIQUE MAROCAIN. LE ROI A SU IMPOSER AUX PARTIS POLITIQUES ISSUS DU MOUVEMENT NATIONAL SA PROPRE CONCEPTION DU POUVOIR. IL A OCTROYE AU PAYS UNE CONSTITUTION QUI, TOUT EN INTEGRANT DES INSTITUTIONS POLITIQUES MODERNES, CONTINUE DE S'INSPIRER DE L'ISLAM ET DE LA TRADITION MAROCAINE. L'ARTICLE 19 DE LA CONSTITUTION PRECISE QUE "LE ROI EST AMIR EL MOUMININE". CETTE QUALITE PLACE LE SOUVERAIN AU DESSUS DES ACTEURS POLITIQUES ET RELIGIEUX. IL EST INTERESSANT DE VOIR DANS QUELLE MESURE LA MONARCHIE MAROCAINE PUISE SES FONDEMENTS IDEOLOGIQUES DANS LE SULTANAT ET LE CALIFAT. LE SOUVERAIN DISPOSE DE NOMBREUX RELAIS POUR ASSURER LA DIFFUSION DE L'ISLAM OFFICIEL. EN EFFET, COMME PAR LE PASSE, LES OULEMAS CONTINUENT UN ROLE IMPORTANT AU NIVEAU DU CONTROLE ET DE LA REPRODUCTION DU DISCOURS IDEOLOGIQUE. CE ROLE S'EST ACCRUE A PARTIR DES ANNEES 80, A L'INSTIGATION DU SOUVERAIN QUI CHERCHA A REVALORISER LA FONCTION DES OULEMAS POUR MIEUX LES UTILISER POUR CONTRER L'INFLUENCE GRANDISSANTE DES ISLAMISTES. TOUT COMME LA TELEVISION, LE MINISTERE DE L'EDUCATION NATIONALE PARTICIPE, PAR LE BIAIS DU CONTENU DE SON ENSEIGNEMENT, A LA DIFFUSIONDE L'IDEOLOGIE OFFICIELLE A UN LARGE PUBLIC. IL EST INTERESSANT DE VOIR QUELLE EST LA PLACE DE L'ISLAM DANS LE DISCOURS DES PARTIS POLITIQUES, COMMENT LE DISCOURS REFORMISTE ACCORDE UNE PLACE PREPONDERANTE A L'ISLAM ET DANS QUELLE MESURE L'U.S.F.P. ET LE P.P.S. ONT REUSSI A CONCILIER LEUR DOCTRINE QUI S'INSPIRE DU SOCIALISME AVEC LES IMPERATIFS DE LA RELIGION MUSULMANE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical reference work on Morocco must take as its subject al-maghrib al-aqsa (the far west) as the Arabic scholars have generally referred to the approximate region of present-day Morocco, roughly the north-west corner of Africa but at times including much of the Iberian peninsula, because the modern nation-state is a relatively recent creation owing much to events in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. External influences on Morocco tend to come across the narrow straits of Gibraltar to the north, from the east along the Mediterranean litoral, or up from the Sahara. In each case, access is constrained by geography and continued control from outside the region has been difficult to manage over the long term. Although many of the dynasties that came to power in Morocco conquered much broader regions, history and topology have so conspired that there is still more coherence to an historical focus on al-maghrib al-aqsa than is the case for most modern nation-states. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Morocco contains a chronology, an introduction, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Morocco.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative analysis that traces the continuity of the state’s custodianship of Islam as the preferred religion in the Middle East and North Africa In The Making of the Modern Muslim State, Malika Zeghal reframes the role of Islam in modern Middle East governance. Challenging other accounts that claim that Middle Eastern states turned secular in modern times, Zeghal shows instead the continuity of the state’s custodianship of Islam as the preferred religion. Drawing on intellectual, political, and economic history, she traces this custodianship from early forms of constitutional governance in the nineteenth century through post–Arab Spring experiments in democracy. Zeghal argues that the intense debates around the implementation and meaning of state support for Islam led to a political cleavage between conservatives and their opponents that long predated the polarization of the twentieth century that accompanied the emergence of mass politics and Islamist movements. Examining constitutional projects, public spending, school enrollments, and curricula, Zeghal shows that although modern Muslim-majority polities have imported Western techniques of governance, the state has continued to protect and support the religion, community, and institutions of Islam. She finds that even as Middle Eastern states have expanded their nonreligious undertakings, they have dramatically increased their per capita supply of public religious provisions, especially Islamic education—further feeding the political schism between Islamists and their adversaries. Zeghal illuminates the tensions inherent in the partnerships between states and the body of Muslim scholars known as the ulama, whose normative power has endured through a variety of political regimes. Her detailed and groundbreaking analysis, which spans Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon, makes clear the deep historical roots of current political divisions over Islam in governance.

Book excerpt: This volume deals with historical and contemporary articulations of the relation of tension between the civilizing impetus of Muslim traditions, and modern forms, fields and techniques of power. These techniques are associated with the process of state-building, as well as with the related constraints of disciplining, normative cohesion, control of the territory and monitored social differentiation. The contributions conceptualize Muslim traditions as deriving their legitimacy, authority, as well as normative and organizing power from being embedded in the discourses and institutions of Islam, which constitute one major center within world history, by now also encompassing Muslim communities within Western societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a new perspective on sociolinguistics in Africa. Eschewing the traditional approach which looks at the interaction between European and African languages in the wake of colonialism, this book turns its focus to the social dynamics of African languages and African societies. Divided into two sections, the book offers insight into the crucial topics such as: language vitality and endangerment, the birth of ‘new languages’, a sociolinguistics of the city, language contact and language politics. It spans the continent from Algeria to South Africa, Guinea-Bissau to Kenya and addresses the following broad themes: Language variation, contact and changeThe dynamics of urban, rural and youth languagesPolicy and practice This book provides an alternative to the Eurocentric view of sociolinguistic dynamics in Africa, and will make an ideal read or supplemental textbook for scholars and students in the field/disciplines of African languages and linguistics, and those interested in southern theory or ‘sociolinguistics in the margins’.
