Book excerpt: Susila Budhi Dharma is the full name of Subud--an international mystic movement originated in Indonesia. This study is concerned with one of the most rapidly growing religious movements in the present generation. Arriving in England in 1957, within a few years the movement had converted thousands of followers in scores of countries around the globe, including Europe, the U.S. and South America. The charismatic leader, Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, a typical Javanese guru of the priayi variant, claims, like many other religious leaders, that Subud is a long-awaited solution to the spiritual dilemma of all mankind. The thesis is that Subud is not necessarily unique, but that it is a part of the indigenous religion of Java. An introductory chapter is dedicated to this subject, providing the reader ample background of Subud. Of the numerous mystic sects in Java, Subud is the only one that has foreign followers. At the home base, Subud does not have a large following compared to some other mystic societies. Muhammad Subuh stresses that Subud would be more prosperous in the West than in Asia. The rapid growth of Subud originated with Husein Rofe, a British Jewish journalist, who landed in Indonesia in 1950. The study points out the importance of the fact that Rofe's first contact was with Subud, and not with any other kebatian society. As an Indonesian mystic movement, Subud is new to the West. In the past, the West was more familiar with Hindu, Buddhist, or Muslim mystic sects, primarily originating from India, Tibet, China or Japan. The reader will find that one or other reason for the rapid expansion of Subud was the timely arrival of Rofe in England among 12,000 followers of Gurdjieff, a Russian mystic guru, who died in 1949 and left a vacuum in leadership among his members. Former Gurdjieffs believe that Subud came with similar teachings as those of their leader. The healing of Eva Bartok, the Hungarian movie star and personal friend of Gurdjieff leader Dr. John G. Bennett, convinced the latter of the power of the latihan, and his influence brought the Gurdjieffs to accept Subud. The study also points out that although Subud does not require converts to leave their own faith, many foreigners have become Muslims, the nominal religion of Java, and have taken over many Javanese practices, such as selamatan, fasting, name-changing, and even habits like smoking imported Javanese cigarettes. Most of the indigenous sects of Java have little or no organization, but the study proves that with the influx of Westerners the movement became highly organized. Subud functions both in the spiritual as well as in the secular field. Subud operates businesses and enterprises. Latihan which is the central axis of the movement is the primary attraction of thousands of converts to the ranks of Subud. It is used in the solution of many difficult problems or curing illnesses. The study proves that other Javanese mystic sects also perform latihan, though some use different local terms for the same spiritual exercise. Subud generally restricts the use of its publications to its own members. It was, however, possible to base this study largely on primary sources obtained from Subud friends and interviews. Most Javanese mystic sects disintegrate with the death of the founder. Each sect begins anew, centering around a new guru. Subud with its highly structured organization, its thousands of foreign followers around the world and its many secular investments may survive.

Book excerpt: This book is the first work that comprehensively presents the accounts of Lia Eden, a former flower arranger who claims to have received divine messages from the Archangel Gabriel and founded the divine Eden Kingdom in her house in Jakarta. This book places Lia Eden’s prophetic trajectory in the context of diverse Indonesian spiritual and religious traditions, by which hundreds of others also claimed to have been commanded by God to lead people and to establish religious groups. This book offers a fresh approach towards the rich Indonesian religious and spiritual traditions with particular attention to the accounts of the emergence of indigenous prophets who founded some popular religions. It presents the history of prophetic tradition which remains alive in Indonesian society from the colonial to reform period. It also explores the ways in which these prophets rebelled against two hegemonies: colonial power in the past and Islamic orthodoxy in the present. The discussion of this book focuses on Lia Eden including her biography, claims to prophethood and divinity, the development of her group Eden Kingdom, her challenge to Islamic orthodoxy under the banner of the MUI (Indonesian Ulama Council), her persecution by radical groups, her experiences in court trials and imprisonment, and public responses to her emergence. The discussion also covers other themes currently drawing public attention in Indonesia, such as pluralism, religious freedom, tolerance, discrimination against minorities, and secularisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Sufism is sometimes dismissed as a relatively recent "new age" phenomenon, but in this book Mark Sedgwick argues that it has deep roots, both in the Muslim world and in the West. In fact, although the first significant Western Sufi organization was not established until 1915, the first Western discussion of Sufism was printed in 1480, and Western interest in Sufi thought goes back to the thirteenth century. Sedgwick starts with the earliest origins of Western Sufism in late antique Neoplatonism and early Arab philosophy, and traces later origins in repeated intercultural transfers from the Muslim world to the West, in the thought of the European Renaissance and Enlightenment, and in the intellectual and religious ferment of the nineteenth century. He then follows the development of organized Sufism in the West from 1915 until 1968, the year in which the first Western Sufi order based on purely Islamic models was founded. Western Sufism shows the influence of these origins, of thought both familiar and less familiar: Neoplatonic emanationism, perennialism, pantheism, universalism, and esotericism. Western Sufism is the product not of the new age but of Islam, the ancient world, and centuries of Western religious and intellectual history. Using sources from antiquity to the internet, Sedgwick demonstrates that the phenomenon of Western Sufism draws on centuries of intercultural transfers and is part of a long-established relationship between Western thought and Islam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism has not only survived into the twenty-first century but has experienced a significant resurgence throughout the Muslim world. Sufism and the 'Modern' in Islam offers refreshing new perspectives on this phenomenon, demonstrating surprising connections between Sufism and Muslim reformist currents, and the vital presence of Sufi ideas and practices in all spheres of life. Contrary to earlier theories of the modernization of Muslim societies, Sufi influence on the political, economic and intellectual life of contemporary Muslim societies has been considerable. Although less noticed than the resurgence of radical Islam, Sufi orders and related movements involve considerably larger numbers of followers, even among the modern urban middle classes. This innovative study brings together new comparative and interdisciplinary research to show how Sufis have responded to modernization and globalization and how various currents of Islamic reform and Sufism have interacted. Offering fascinating new insights into the pervasive Sufi influence on modern Islamic religiosity and contemporary political and economic life, this book raises important questions about Islam in the age of urbanism and mass communications.

Book excerpt: Subud is an international spiritual movement that began in Indonesia in the 1920s, founded by Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo. The movement spread to Europe and the rest of the world in the late 1950s. The practice of Subud requires a personal initiation which can be transmitted from one person to another. John Bennett who received the contact from Husein Rof, was among the first Europeans to embrace Subud, and worked actively from 1957-1960 to grow the Subud movement. The lectures which make up this book were presented in 1960 and have been supplemented by a paper written later exploring the relationship between Subud and various Sufi teachers and traditions, based upon certain references made by Muhammad Subuh to his own Naqshbandi influences. John Godolphin Bennett (1897-1974) was a British mathematician, technologist, linguist and spiritual teacher. He is known as a leading exponent of the work of his teacher G.I. Gurdjieff. At the time of his death, Bennett was the Director of the International Academy for Continuous Education, Gloucestershire UK, a residential school based on the principles of Gurdjieff.

Book excerpt: This is the story of a life of adventure and search, an account of meetings with great teachers, a love story, an inspirational tale of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. John Bennett (1897-1974) had not one career but several; starting his life as a soldier and spymaster in the early years of the Middle East conflicts, Bennett moved into - and failed - in the world of finance as an adventurer and entrepreneur. He reinvented himself as a world-leading technologist and director of research. All through his adult life, his outer life was on a parallel and sometimes divergent course to his inner spiritual search under the guidance of P.D. Ouspensky and G.I. Gurdjieff. After his career in the coal industry came to an abrupt end in his sixth decade, he entered the path of a single-minded seeker. For fifteen years, he travelled widely, seeking knowledge and sharing knowledge. Although he began a written account of his ideas in 1940, it was only in the last four years of his life that he declared his willingness to teach and worked intensively with large groups of students at his International Academy for Continuous Education. Subsequent history has revealed over end over that Bennett was ahead of his time, and that he developed and presented a vision of the next stage of evolution of humanity in the Synergic Epoch.

Originally published in 1970, The New Religions was the first full-scale study of alternative spirituality in America. It remains unparalleled for the intellectual depth and seriousness with which it regards Eastern, New Age, and alternative faiths on the American landscape. Needleman’s writing and reportage are unfailingly thoughtful and incisive as he illuminates topics that other scholars failed to consider or could not fully grasp.

Book excerpt: Focuses on the heartland of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, and on the role of ulama (religious leaders), or kiai as they are known in Java, within NU. Based on substantial fieldwork, this study provides an informed glimpse into the intimate relationships among kiai, their role in local and national politics and their leadership of the Islamic community. Argues that the charismatic authority exerted through the leadership of the kiai in Java has limitations in terms of its legitimacy. At the very least it has boundaries that determine areas or circumstances for its legitimate expression. It also argues that the kiai's influence in politics is not as strong as in other domains.
