Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Islam? Who can give a better answer than Muhammad, Prophet of Islam, peace be on him, himself? In a celebrated report, recorded by Bukhari and all the collections of Hadith, it is mentioned as follows: In the last days of the life of the Prophet, one day an unknown visitor came to see him and put to him four questions: What is iman (faith), what is Islam (submission), what is ihsan (best method), and when will come the end of the world? As to Faith, he replied: one should believe in God, in His heavenly agents, in His books (or: prescriptions), in His human messengers (or: prophets), in the Dooms day and in the fact that good and evil, all is determined by God. Regarding Submission, he said: belief in God, daily services of worship-prayer, fasting in the month of Ramadan, paying the zakat-tax, and pilgrimage to the House of God (in Mecca). The Best method, said he, of doing the duty is that you render your duty unto God as if you see Him present; although you do not see Him, yet He sees you. For the last question, regarding the moment of the end of the world, which is an elucidation of part of the reply to the first question, his answer was: I do not know it better than you, (the day is coming yet none other than God knows when). When the visitor went away, the Prophet said: It was Gabriel who had come to teach you your religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Berry argues that some of the commonly found traditions and practices in the Arab world today reflect the traditions of pre-Islamic Arab culture rather than the Islam described in the Qur'an. The author also attempts to distinguish those beliefs, traditions and practices that emerge from the Qur'an and those that are rooted in other Muslim traditions that may not be authoritative for all Muslims. Another key element of Pictures of Islam is a look at modernity and Islam. The impact of modernity is still being felt in most of the Muslim world. Berry also identifies ten barriers that hinder positive Muslim Christian relations today. Muslims and Christians do share many commons beliefs and traditions, yet the reader must also understand the historical, theological, and practical factors that have led to conflict between Christians and Muslims. Book excerpt: Islam is one of the world's great monotheistic religions. Islamic culture, spanning 1,500 years, has produced some of the finest achievements of humanity. Yet the religion followed by a fifth of humankind is too often seen in the West in terms of fundamentalism, bigotry and violence- a perception that couldn't be more wrong. Introducing Islam recounts the history of Islam from the birth of Prophet Muhammad in the 6th century to its status as a global culture and political force today. Charting the achievements of Muslim civilisation, it explains the nature and message of the Qur'an, outlines the basic features of Islamic law, and assesses the impact of colonialism on Muslim societies. Ziauddin Sardar and Zafar Abbas Malik show how Muslims everywhere are trying to live their faith and are shaping new Islamic ideas and ideals for a globalised world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite frequent and extensive publications on Islam, very few Americans, indeed very few non-Muslims, truly understand the faith or the more than one billion adherents who live it. This set presents the diversity and richness of Islam, filling in the blanks and expanding our knowledge and understanding. Portraying Muslims in all their humanity and diversity balances the images that have bombarded society and presents the reader with a fuller and more accurate picture of the Islamic faith and what it means to live as a Muslim—in Muslim communities, and as part of a broader tapestry of pluralism in the nations of the world. What does it mean to share Muslim concerns? To experience Muslim spirituality? What is the difference between Sunni and Shiite sects? Why do Muslims pray so frequently? What is the reality of Muslim marriage and gender relations? What is the meaning of jihad and martyrdom to a practicing Muslim? What role do the arts and humanities play in modern Muslim life? How are Islamic children raised? These questions and others are answered in these volumes, which bring together Muslim voices from around the world, including men and women, scholars and laypersons, fundamentalists and progressives, and others from various cultural, political, and Islamic backgrounds. Personal experiences and poetry are included to illustrate the many different expressions of Islam.

This report provides detailed descriptions of subgroups, their stands on various issues, and what those stands may mean for the West. Since the outcomes can matter greatly to international community, that community might wish to influence them by providing support to appropriate actors. The author recommends a mixed approach of providing specific types of support to those who can influence the outcomes in desirable ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lavishly illustrated with over 300 pictures, including more than 200 in full color, The Oxford History of Islam offers the most wide-ranging and authoritative account available of the second largest--and fastest growing--religion in the world. John L. Esposito, Editor-in-Chief of the four-volume Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World, has gathered together sixteen leading scholars, both Muslim and non-Muslim, to examine the origins and historical development of Islam--its faith, community, institutions, sciences, and arts. Beginning in the pre-Islamic Arab world, the chapters range from the story of Muhammad and his Companions, to the development of Islamic religion and culture and the empires that grew from it, to the influence that Islam has on today's world. The book covers a wide array of subjects, casting light on topics such as the historical encounter of Islam and Christianity, the role of Islam in the Mughal and Ottoman empires, the growth of Islam in Southeast Asia, China, and Africa, the political, economic, and religious challenges of European imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and Islamic communities in the modern Western world. In addition, the book offers excellent articles on Islamic religion, art and architecture, and sciences as well as bibliographies. Events in the contemporary world have led to an explosion of interest and scholarly work on Islam. Written for the general reader but also appealing to specialists, The Oxford History of Islam offers the best of that recent scholarship, presented in a readable style and complemented by a rich variety of illustrations.
