Book excerpt: Ishtar is the first book dedicated to providing an accessible analysis of the mythology and image of this complex goddess. The polarity of her nature is reflected in her role as goddess of sexual love and war, and has made her difficult to characterise in modern scholarship. By exploring this complexity, Ishtar offers insight into Mesopotamian culture and thought, and elucidates a goddess who transcended the limits of gender, divinity and nature. It gives an accessible introduction to the Near Eastern pantheon, while also opening a pathway for comparison with the later Near Eastern and Mediterranean deities who followed her.

Yet as the childhood companion of King Ditanu, Iltani never doubted her place in either his kingdom or his heart. Then duty called her away to complete her training. Now, a woman grown and a sword-maiden to the goddess Ishtar, Iltani returns and takes up her sacred destiny to protect the royal line. But so much has changed. Ditanu most of all. The youth she knew is gone. A stoic, untouchable king now sits the throne. Does anything of their once deep bond survive? Iltani must swiftly find her place in a court where cunning governors plot treason, trusted advisors orchestrate deceptions, and noblewomen seek to beguile King Ditanu using methods both fair and foul. But the greatest threat of all is no mortal adversary. Ereshkigal, the Queen of the Underworld, desires to make Ditanu her consort and seize his kingdom for her own. Book excerpt: Donna Marcellini travelled across Europe, strutting the atwalks of London, Paris and Milan-but she had become bored with her chosen career. She had diverted her interests instead to ecoming one of London's most sought after courtesans. Her participation and enjoyment of London's infamous BDSM scene had also guaranteed her popularity amongst the rich and famous. Her skills and intelligence were soon recognised by superintendant Emerson of Special Branch who recruited her to act as a decoy in the pursuit of the Russian Mafi a to break their hold on the white slave trade. Russian and East European girls were being smuggled into the U.K. in ever increasing numbers; deceived into believing they could land lucrative jobs in the West they were naively press ganged into prostitution. The plan was simple. Donna, because of her sexual prowess and fl uency in the Russian language, was to act as a Russian girl, looking for an easy way to get to the West. She was an obvious choice in aiding Interpol and the British police to track her on her journey through Europe. But the plan went horribly wrong and what was to be a simple tracking operation became a rescue mission and a chase that went half way across the world. Donna faced abuse and death on an almost daily basis and it wasn't the easy mission she had been promised it would be.

Book excerpt: The Mistress of Heaven, the goddess Ishtar, stands in a unique position of supremacy among the goddess figures of the world; and her descent into the underworld is her essential distinctive myth. The primacy of the goddess and her lover, Dumuzi, to the seasonal cycle, and the ritual marriage which was a ceremony of the union essential to civilized life, was not retained within the textual Judeo-Christian tradition. As a result this mythological cycle of the goddess restores the expressive sexual metaphor of agricultural fertility, which merges the domestic concerns of womanhood with the essential productive forces of nature. Included along with this essential seasonal myth are two entirely dissimilar tales concerned with military valor, heroic conquest, and the assumption of absolute power; the partially incomplete Mesopotamian tales of 'The Epic of Anzu' and 'Erra and Ishum'.

Book excerpt: A fascinating exploration of the contents of Agatha Christie's seventy-three private notebooks, including illustrations and two unpublished Poirot stories When Agatha Christie died in 1976, at age eighty-five, she had become the world's most popular author. With sales of more than two billion copies worldwide, in more than one hundred countries, she had achieved the impossible—more than one book every year since the 1920s, every one a bestseller. So prolific was Agatha Christie's output—sixty-six crime novels, twenty plays, six romance novels under a pseudonym and more than one hundred and fifty short stories—it was often claimed that she had a photographic memory. Was this true? Or did she resort over those fifty-five years to more mundane methods of working out her ingenious crimes? Following the death of Agatha's daughter, Rosalind, at the end of 2004, a remarkable legacy was revealed. Unearthed among her affairs at the family home of Greenway were Agatha Christie's private notebooks, seventy-three handwritten volumes of notes, lists and drafts outlining all her plans for her many books, plays and stories. Buried in this treasure trove, all in her unmistakable handwriting, are revelations about her famous books that will fascinate anyone who has ever read or watched an Agatha Christie story. How did the infamous twist in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd really come about? Which very famous Poirot novel started life as an adventure for Miss Marple? Which books were designed to have completely differ-ent endings, and what were they? What were the plot ideas that she considered but rejected? Full of details she was too modest to reveal in her own autobiography, this remarkable new book includes a wealth of excerpts and pages reproduced directly from the notebooks and her letters, plus, for the first time, two newly discovered complete Hercule Poirot short stories never before published.

Book excerpt: Six-thousand-year-old clay tablets left behind by the Sumerians tell us in cuneiform script that the planets Uranus and Neptune are "greenish-blue." How did they know? Our science could not confirm that until the Voyager II fly-by in the 1980s. The ignored question of the last century has to be: “Who told the Sumerians that Uranus and Neptune exist, and about their colors?” Again: “Who told them?” Take a breath to grasp the significance of that question? The same clay tablets also tell that Inanna, a fierce and beautiful goddess from antiquity, is not a fictional character. As Aphrodite to the Greeks, Venus to the Romans, through many adventures and love affairs erroneously categorized as myth, she gained for herself a place in the Nefilim Pantheon of Twelve. Inanna/Ishtar is a chronicle of fact-based incidents interspersed with highly probable fictional stepping stones. Acknowledged the “Goddess of Love and War,” her ferocity in battle and passion in bed are depicted in the detail anticipated of one bearing that epithet. For the deities of antiquity, the few prohibitions regarding sex were related to royal rights of succession allowing Inanna, a Divine Child, daughter of two of the ruling pantheon, a free romp among the gods and mortals of her time. This tale swims upstream against the flow of current teachings and knowledge. It contains theory and context some may find objectionable. Eventually, continually emerging discoveries will require a rewrite of the Bible (another one), giving our precursors the place in our ancient history they deserve. It is through our Creator, by way of the Nefilim and Anunnaki, that we exist in our present form, far ahead of our time. They provided the “missing link” that has baffled anthropologists for centuries. Nibiru, their home planet, ("Planet X" to current astronomers), orbits our sun from deep space. The Sumerians tell it is a monarchy ruled by a pantheon of twelve including a King, his two sons, a daughter, and eight others of royal blood. To accept their reality, consider how they came to be; a subject that is not being taught in our culture. I hope the following will help make it clear. The title, “Goddess of Love and War,” is bestowed on Inanna by history, not the author. It would not be fitting to write, "They kissed and went to bed to make love.” Therefore, the several descriptions of sexual activity herein are not gratuitous, but they are graphic.

Book excerpt: An ancient goddess in the light of a contemporary love story . . .Ishtar is the Mesopotamian goddess of love and war. Like the Greek Persephone, she descends to the Underworld and can return to Earth only after great hardship. Her story is that of the universal patterns of feminine power that transcend the dual nature of existence, balancing life and death and the forces that perpetuate the cycles of our universe. Today, this archetype represents the resurrection of the power of the feminine that for centuries has been absent from our human story. Said Dawlabani's poignant memoir, The Light of Ishtar, draws parallels between the ancient goddess and his wife and soulmate, Elza Maalouf, recognizing inner energies that are universal to us all. For over a decade, the dazzling futurist Elza Malouf spearheaded the resurrection of feminine power in the Middle East. A passionate agent of transformation, she championed women's rights everywhere. With Don Beck, leader of the Spiral Dynamics theory of human evolution, she and Said cofounded the Center for Human Emergence Middle East. She is author of the award-winning book Emerge! The Rise of Functional Democracy and the Future of the Middle East. And Said, applying values systems to large-scale change, became an eminent speaker and author as well. Brilliant and dynamic, this Lebanese American couple seemed destined for greatness on the world stage―until in 2014 disaster struck. With excerpts from Elza's own unpublished memoir, Said tells the story of their backgrounds in Lebanon and their early romance in the States. He draws on Joseph Campbell's hero's journey to chronicle their ascent to prominence in their respective fields as part of their mythic call to adventure. Then with rare courage he explores the dark side of the psyche when, at age forty-nine, Elza begins descending into speechless dementia. Ishtar's journey to the Underworld mirrors them both as Said battles with the dark forces within himself and within the medical community, trying to restore Elza to health. But, unlike the goddess, Elza can't return to live in the world as she once did. In telling the story, Said explores the patterns at the heart of transformational experience: the deep wounding, the grief, and the long road to acceptance, recognizing that a life dedicated to improving the human condition does not rise above caring for one human being. Reframing his and Elza's experience through Ishtar's powerful myth provides a compelling example of how we can all lead richer and extraordinary lives. Said's spiritual observations elevate perception to a place of universal awareness. He demonstrates how myth, wonder, and mystery are constantly around us if we transcend the physical lens through which we usually interpret life. On the far side of such transcendence is the true meaning of love that goes beyond time and space. Said shows how a union of two souls represents the greater search for the beloved and how the coming together of the feminine and the masculine mirrors a universe in harmony. At the end, he can take solace in the simple pleasures that still remain, as he and Elza sit companionably in their garden by the sea.

It's about the superior intelligence and self empowerment which comes from interacting with beings which inhabit a parallel universe to this one - another dimension - from whom man has traditionally gained his wisdom about his place and purpose on Earth and in the cosmos. In ancient times, the ability to tap into this superior wisdom was transmitted to kings and pharaohs by one who was in touch with these extra-dimensional beings or lifeforms, who are also known as the spirits. Sovereignty comes from the spirits of the land, otherwise known as the Fae, the Gentry, the Sidhe or the Faeries. These spirits are like Man, but are of an Elder and wiser race which inhabits a timeless zone within the parallel dimensions. These days, only children can see them, who haven't yet had that perceptivity educated and ridiculed out of them. Shamans and high priestesses in Neolithic times were in touch with these spirits of the land, and so were able to transmit their wisdom to the king or pharaoh in sacred sex rites during his coronation night. This became known as the Sovereignty because it fired up the king's higher brain centres, giving him a superior intelligence and thus the ability and the right to reign. Our ancestors have left us magical keys in their orally passed on myths which, like messages in a bottle, can help us find the way to spark up that wisdom again, in ourselves. As a shaman and mythologist, the author Ishtar Babilu Dingir is regularly in communion with the spirits of the land where she lives in Glastonbury, Somerset. In this book, she has laid out the way for the ordinary person to regain their Sovereignty, which is their birthright, through shamanic sexual practises and also by learning to visit these other dimensions on the inner planes. First, she lays the foundation stone for the teaching by showing the evidence - from ancient Greece, Egypt, Crete, India, Sumer and Babylon - that sacred sex was an integral part of the Kingship rites, and the literary evidence that the spirits were present in the lovemaking. She also explains about our earlier ancestors' understanding about the Faery Marriage, and what she believes is the original meaning of the Holy Grael, tracing it back to the Neanderthals about 45,000 years ago. The reader then learns how to perform shamanic sex themselves, to fire up their own superior intelligence. Finally, Ishtar reveals more about her own relationship with the local spirits of the land, so that others may become inspired to explore their own locality and thus begin their quest towards higher brain development and self-empowerment - to Sovereignty.
