Book excerpt: The idea for this volume arose out of a need for a treatment of the interplay between language and ethnonationalism within both formal and nonformal educational settings. In no way intended to be exhaustive in scope, the contents give the reader a critical overview of issues related to language, cultural identity formation, and ethnonationalism. The chapters within this work deal with the effects of different language groups with differing amounts of power within society coming into contact with one another, and provide insight into how language is both utilized by and affected by processes such as colonialism, post-colonialism, acculturation, and ethnonationalism. Language is central to culture—indeed houses cultural understandings and allows generational transfer of key aspects of a group’s heritage.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Flexible and Smart Sheet Forming Techniques presents a collection of research on state-of-art techniques developed specifically for flexible and smart sheet forming, with a focus on using analytical strategies and computational, simulation, and AI approaches to develop innovative sheet forming techniques. Bringing together various engineering perspectives, the book emphasizes how these manufacturing techniques intersect with Industry 4.0 technologies for applications in the mechanical, automobile, industrial, aerospace, and medical industries. The first section of the book introduces the concepts, classifications, variants, process cycles, and materials for flexible and smart sheet forming techniques and compares them with other conventional sheet forming processes. Subsequent sections delve deeper into topics such as: hardware and software required for these techniques; parameters, responses, and optimization strategies; the mechanics of flexible and smart sheet forming; simulation approaches; applications; and future innovations and directions. Each chapter will feature research outcomes, illustrations, case studies, and examples useful to anyone who needs to better understand and utilize these new manufacturing technologies.

Book excerpt: It has long been known that every individual has a large number of antibodies of different specificities. Antibodies are gammaglobulins, and protein structure in cells is genetically determined. The extreme multiplicity of structure of the combining sites of antibodies relative to the degree of multiplicity generated by ordinary genetic mechanisms is a fascinating problem of bio-medical importance. The functional heterogeneity of reactions mediated by immunoglobulins-is remarkable, ranging from protection against life-threatening toxins and microbes to the production of laryngeal edema leading to suffocation and death from anaphylaxis. An approach to the understanding of immunoglobulin polymorphism based upon "a knowledge of genetic markers of immunoglobulin structure is not biased by the question of whether or not this polymorphism is related to combining site diversity. Though several recent reviews of the multifacetted problems related to immuno globulins are available, it was decided to publish this survey in the belief that know ledge of the genetic markers of immunoglobulins prqvides such information about immunoglobulin differentiation and its control as cannot be obtained from other sources. Several of the human genetic im~unoglobulin markers are well understood at the molecular level. The Gm system may serv~ as a model for other immuno genetic systems. The published data on the human immunoglobulin factors are widely scattered in journals of different perspectives. There is a need for a systematic presentation of these data and for their critical evaluation.

Book excerpt: Using an accessible yet rigorous approach, Active Filters: Theory and Design highlights the essential role of filters, especially analog active filters, in applications for seismology, brainwave research, speech and hearing studies, and other medical electronics. The book demonstrates how to design filters capable of meeting a given set of specifications. Recognizing that circuit simulation by computer has become an indispensable verification tool both in analysis and in design, the author emphasizes the use of MicroCap for rapid test of the filter. He uses three basic filter types throughout the book: Butterworth, Chenyshev, and Bessel. These three types of filters are implemented with the Sallen-Key, infinite gain multiple feedback, state-variable, and biquad circuits that yield low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-reject circuits. The book illustrates many examples of low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and notch active filters in complete detail, including frequency normalizing and denormalizing techniques. Design equations in each chapter provide students with a thorough grounding in how to implement designs. This detailed theoretical treatment gives you the tools to teach your students how to master filter design and analysis.

Book excerpt: This practical and comprehensive reference gives the latest developments on the design of sheet forming operations, equipment, tooling, and process modeling. Individual chapters cover all major sheet forming processes such as blanking, bending, deep drawing, and more. Process modeling using finite element analysis is described in one chapter and discussed in all appropriate chapters. Other chapters cover sensors and die materials, which are critical for practical sheet forming applications. Other topics include relatively new technologies, such as warm forming of magnesium and aluminum alloys, forming of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), and hot stamping. Chapters also address special sheet forming operations, like spinning, incremental forming, and mechanical joining, and processes related to sheet forming, such as sheet and tube hydroforming, roll forming, and high-velocity forming.
