Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew's Jesus is typically described as the humble, compassionate messiah. This 2002 book argues that this is, however, only half the story. Matthew's theologically rich quotation of Isaiah 42.1–4, traditionally considered one of the four servant songs, underscores that manifest in Jesus' powerful message and deeds, particularly his healings and inclusion of the marginalized, is the justice that was thought to accompany the arrival of the kingdom of God. The study explores modifications to the text-form of the Isaianic citations, their relationship to the surrounding context, and the rhetorical force of the final form. It argues that the quotations are bi-referential, functioning on both a narrative and theological level, and also explores the issues surrounding the troublesome 'extraneous' content. It arrives at the conclusion that this citation was central to Matthew's understanding of Jesus' life and mission. All totalled, this study offers a refreshing exploration of Matthew's high, ethical Christology.

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.

Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a new resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God's Word. Each 12-week study leads participants through one book of the Bible and is made up of four basic components: (1) Reflection questions designed to help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) "Gospel Glimpses" highlighting the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) "Whole-Bible Connections" showing how any given passage connects to the Bible's overarching story of redemption culminating in Christ; and (4) "Theological Soundings" identifying how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from a wide array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God's grace on each and every page of the Bible. Pastor Drew Hunter helps readers understand and apply the challenging words of the prophet Isaiah in this 12-week study. Isaiah's prophecy, which alternates between promises of judgment and restoration, reminds God's people of the magnitude of humanity's sin, the judgment that we all deserve, and how God displays his glory by saving sinners. Throughout the study, Hunter continually shows how Isaiah's promise of cosmic renewal ultimately anticipates the work of Jesus Christ, the servant-king whose death would result in new life for all who trust in him.

When you study scriptures, ask who is talking and to whom are they talking to. Know that there are seven dispensations of time. What is law in one may not be law in another. Do not be afraid of Isaiah! "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross" (Col. 2:15). When Jesus died on the cross, he set the gospel of the Jews aside until his Second Coming. When Jesus appeared to Saul on the road to Damascus, he changed his name to Paul and sent him to the Gentiles with the gospel of grace. We follow the apostle Paul because he is following the Lord Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul is for us in this dispensation of grace. We must study Paul's epistles diligently. The gospel of Jesus Christ is his death, burial, and resurrection. God wants us to find his truth. I pray for all humanity to know God.

Huizenga, reveals the significance of St. Matthew’s Jesus: He is Emmanuel, God with us always, who saves his people from their sins by dying for them. In showing how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament, gave us a way to live, and taught us how to follow the narrow way to the kingdom of heaven, St. Matthew modeled the fourfold way of reading Scripture according to letter and spirit. Above all, St. Matthew’s Gospel presents Jesus Christ founding the Catholic Church as a robust, rigorous religion with rich rituals, chiefly the sacrificial Eucharist as sustenance on the narrow way to heaven. Jesus demands much of his Church, but the same Jesus who commands his Church also promises and delivers much—above all, himself. Keyed to the lectionary and featuring a section on the relevance of St. Matthew’s Gospel for our contemporary age, Behold the Christ will make the Gospel and indeed the Faith real to today’s readers.

Book excerpt: Words swirl around us and opinions are expressed with little thought and less humility. Can you imagine posting, “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a [woman] of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” (Isa. 6:5)? Studying the book of Isaiah is a great place to start to learn humility. Isaiah uses “holy” to describe God more than all the other Old Testament books combined and then reveals a way that God can make us holy - because Christ’s humility leads to our holiness. Table of Contents: Introduction to Isaiah Lesson 1: The Lord Confronts, Consoles, and Condemns (Isaiah 1-5) Lesson 2: The Holy Lord Sends (Isaiah 6-12) Lesson 3: The Lord of Hosts Reigns (Isaiah 13-27) Lesson 4: A Remnant Will Be Redeemed (Isaiah 28-35) Lesson 5: In Whom Do You Now Trust? (Isaiah 36-37) Lesson 6: Deliverance and Declaration (Isaiah 38-39) Lesson 7: The Lord Who Comforts (Isaiah 40:1-44:23) Lesson 8: The Superior Servant (Isaiah 44:24-55:13) Lesson 9: The Lord Sanctifies His People (Isaiah 56:1-59:13) Lesson 10: The Covenant-Keeper and Crimson-Conqueror (Isaiah 59:14-63:6) Lesson 11: A Praying People and A Promise-Keeping God (Isaiah 63:7-66:24)

Beginning with an introductory chapter on the use of Isaiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Second Temple literature, contributors go on to discuss each of the New Testament books that contain quotations from Isaiah: Matthew, Mark, (Q), Luke-Acts, John, Romans and Galatians, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Hebrews, 1 Peter and Revelation. Together they provide an overview of the status, role and function of Isaiah in the first century, considering the Greek and Hebrew manuscript traditions and offering insights into the various hermeneutical stances of the New Testament authors and the development of New Testament theology. The volume includes contributions from Darrell Hannah, Morna Hooker, Christopher Tuckett, Richard Beaton, Bart Koet, Catrin Williams, J. Ross Wagner, Florian Wilk, Cecil McCullough, Steve Moyise and David Mathewson.

Book excerpt: Isaiah is widely considered the deepest, richest, and most theologically significant book in the Old Testament. It is, without question, a profound statement by God about his own sovereignty and majesty spoken through his chosen spokesman, the prophet Isaiah. In this expository commentary on the book of Isaiah, Raymond C. Ortlund, Jr., argues that Isaiah imparts a single vision of God throughout all sixty-six chapters. It is a unified, woven whole presenting God's revelation of himself to mankind, breaking through our pretense and clashing "with our intuitive sense of things." Ortlund makes a point of man's uninterest in God and his unfailing inclination to disbelief, and thus the need for God to "interrupt our familiar ways of thinking." The emphasis of this addition to the Preaching the Word series is this: God saves sinners. He saves them willfully and powerfully and needs no help from us, presenting himself in all his unmistakable glory. The message of Isaiah, shown thoroughly and thoughtfully in this commentary, will reignite a passion for the glory of God in the hearts of believers and will present that glory clearly and potently to those who have yet to be brought to saving faith. Part of the Preaching the Word series. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is currently much interest in the history of interpretation, reader-response and the sociology of sacred texts - in what the text does as much as what it means. Isaiah, 'more evangelist than prophet' according to Jerome and others, provides an ideal case study, because of his profound influence on the language and imagery of Christianity. With illustrations from art, music, literature and the media as well as commentaries, sermons and official church pronouncements, Professor Sawyer shows how Isaiah has been used in all kinds of context, from the cult of the Virgin Mary, mediaeval passion iconography and antisemitic propaganda to Christian feminism and liberation theology. This first attempt at a comprehensive critical study of an essential part of biblical interpretation will provide a model for further research, and ensure that commentaries will never be the same again.

Book excerpt: "The church's mission does not begin with the Great Commission, but is integrally related to the grand storyline of Scripture." Did the Old Testament simply point to the coming of Christ and his saving work, or is there more to the story? After his resurrection, the Lord Jesus revealed how his suffering, glory, and mission plan for the nations are in fact central to the biblical story of redemption. After Emmaus shows how Christology and missiology are integrally connected throughout Scripture, especially in the teaching of Jesus and the apostles. Brian Tabb explains what Luke 24:46–47 reveals about God's messianic promises in the Old Testament, their fulfillment in the New Testament, and the purpose of the church. By understanding Jesus's last words to his disciples, Christians today will be motivated to participate in the Messiah's mission.

Now, the author of Through the Bible in One Year and Great Characters of the Bible leads readers on a chapter-by-chapter study of the book of Isaiah. Stringfellow's in-depth teaching will bring clarity and understanding to one of the most prophetic books in Scripture. With this study, readers will learn… How to identify the major themes of Isaiah All the main doctrines and truths The importance and relevance of prophecy Essential context and background for the little-known prophet Isaiah The role Isaiah plays in the coming of the Messiah By embarking on this journey, believers will learn to better understand and appreciate the role of the prophet--to foretell the future, but also to speak truth to a lost and sinful generation. Stringfellow makes powerful connections between the wealth and plenty of Isaiah's time and the abundance and decadence of our present world. The true value of this prophecy is that it occupies us with a Person, and not merely with events—the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, who came to suffer and will return to reign. All of this is foretold by a great poetic genius whose gripping words and imagery could only have been inspired by the hand of God.
