Book excerpt: The story opens on a summer day in Annapolis when 39 year-old ISAAC DOUGLAS, a talented African American attorney and young father, is suddenly faced with two life-changing decisions. To replace his running mate who was mysteriously murdered, The Governor of Maryland asked Isaac to run for Lieutenant Governor. On the same day Isaac received a rambling letter from CAPN JIM, the scion of the wealthy Chestertown, Maryland WORTHINGTON family. Capn Jim is now serving a 25-year sentence for shooting a black boy who was playing on his dock near the family mansion on the Chester River. Capn Jim begs Isaac to help him get out of prison. Youre a big deal lawyer now, know the Governor, know the ropes. For five generations, Isaacs family has served the wealthy Worthingtons. Most recently, Capn Jims wife, the kindly MARION WORTHINGTON, funded Isaacs education. Until recently African-Americans have had little or no power. They have survived rapes, lynchings and constant humiliations of racism. Isaacs ancestors were bought, sold, and whipped. His great-grandfather was lynched. Blacks were not allowed to vote or testify against whites, but now Isaac has the promise of new power and a dilemma. Reluctantly, Isaac visits Capn Jim in prison. He learns that perhaps Capn Jim just fired a warning shot from his veranda. Maybe the boy was pushed off the dock and drowned. By chance, Isaac meets DILLY PRICE, a rough black mechanic, who reveals he was foreman of the jury and convinced his fellow jurors to convict Capn Jim. About time we turned the tablesour chance to get one athem. Shocked, Isaac heads for the Chestertown courthouse, where he reads the complete transcript of Capn Jims trial. Tormented by feelings of obligation Isaac wonders if he can overcome his own long buried rage and resentment? What should he do? Its Isaacs call.

Book excerpt: Facing public criticism, peer hostility, and widespread disapproval, would you compromise your principles to blend in with the crowd, or would you stand for what you believe? On July 31, 2020, the Orlando Magic starting forward Jonathan Isaac was the lone NBA player not to kneel for the national anthem amid a league-wide demonstration in support of Black Lives Matter. Standing alone, knowing the scrutiny to come, Jonathan had a peace he at one time never could have imagined possible. In Why I Stand, Jonathan shares the journey of how—through a series of divine connections and a willingness to follow Christ—his fear and insecurity-driven life was transformed into one of confidence and purpose. From his childhood in the Bronx to his high school years in Florida, from rail-skinny freshman at FSU to top draft pick in the NBA, Jonathan uses his life story to illuminate the freedom and peace found in the love of Jesus Christ. More than the story of an NBA player’s transformation from man on the court to man of God, Why I Stand is a testament to His love, power, and grace that extends to us all. This book is a discovery that no matter your level of confidence today, God’s strength will develop in your weakness. That courage is found in trusting that God is greater than your fears. As Jonathan takes you through the experiences that drove his decisions, he offers insight and inspiration to help you to grow to a point where standing alone is better than not standing at all.

Tabloid reporter, Jamie Parkes has it all, ambition, drive and charisma. He goes to extreme lengths to make the headlines and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty when pursueing a story. He interprets voice messages, fabricates quotes and trawls through his web of contacts to find out more about the victims in the 9/11 disaster. But when one of his stories is mysteriously spiked, he begins to question the motives of his flamboyant editor, Warren Fitton. Fitton treats phone hacking and corruption allegations with breathtaking flippancy which leaves Jamie feeling uncomfortable. Confused by the alterations in his story, he decides to investigate further. He wants to know why his world exclusive was ditched and more importantly who is behind it. As he searches for evidence, he soon discovers that he has become the target and he is being framed. His whistleblower status turns into an epic battle for survival as the state, police and media hunt him down. Once a seasoned reporter, but now a wanted man. Jamie Parkes becomes the scapegoat for discrediting the tabloid empire. Wacko Hacko is a political thriller loosely based on the phone hacking saga. Readers interested in current affairs, including the recently explosive Leveson enquiry, will find this novel particularly interesting. This novel will also interest fans of thriller fiction with its dark narrative and disturbingly convincing characters. Set in the pre-smartphone era, Wacko Hacko also explores pressing issues in the tabloid world including the rise of celebrity, the treatment of women and the love-hate relationship with the police.

The U.S. Congress passed Senate Joint Resolution 137 authorizing the Presidential appointed Commission to report on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, mandating the attendance and testimony of witnesses and the production of evidence. After eleven months of the investigation the Commission presented its findings in 888-page final report. The key findings presented in this report were that President Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, that Oswald acted entirely alone and that Jack Ruby also acted alone when he killed Oswald two days later. The Commission's findings have proven controversial and have been both challenged and supported by later studies.
