Download or read book Love and Hydrogen written by Jim Shepard and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’ve been a problem baby, a lousy son, a distant brother, an off-putting neighbor, a piss-poor student, a worrisome seatmate, an unreliable employee, a bewildering lover, a frustrating confidante and a crappy husband. Among the things I do pretty well at this point I’d have to list darts, re-closing Stay-Fresh boxes, and staying out of the way. This is the self-eulogy offered early on by the unwilling hero of the opening story in this collection, a dazzling array of work in short fiction from a master of the form. The stories in Love and Hydrogen—familiar to readers from publications ranging from McSweeney’s to The New Yorker to Harper’s to Tin House—encompass in theme and compassion what an ordinary writer would seem to need several lifetimes to imagine. A frustrated wife makes use of an enterprising illegal-gun salesman to hold her husband hostage; two hapless adult-education students botch their attempts at rudimentary piano but succeed in a halting, awkward romance; a fascinated and murderous Creature welcomes the first human visitors to his Black Lagoon; and in the title story, the stupefyingly huge airship Hindenburg flies to its doom, representing in 1937 mankind's greatest yearning as well as its titanic failure. Generous in scope and astonishing in ambition, Shepard’s voice never falters; the virtuosity of Love and Hydrogen cements his reputation as, in the words of Rick Bass, “a passionate writer with a razor-sharp wit and an elephantine heart”—in short, one of the most powerful talents at work today.

Book Synopsis Development Policy in the Cold War Era by : Brigitte Schulz
Download or read book Development Policy in the Cold War Era written by Brigitte Schulz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book critically compares the ideological claims with the reality of aid and trade relations between two highly industrialized states, the FRG and the GDR, and sub-Saharan Africa. Based on extensive research in both Germanies, the study shows that these aid and trade relations were always subordinated to the narrow economic and geopolitical interests of the donor countries. Even the competing development models advocated by the East and the West were ultimately more a reflection of self-interest than a desire to help in the self-sustaining growth of the Third World. Neither bloc sought to change the existing international divison of labor nor to improve the terms of trade for the Third World. With the end of the Cold War, development aid relations will also gradually come to an end. This book shows why this may not be as disastrous for the Third World as is generally assumed. Brigitte H. Schulz is Professor for Political Science at the Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut (USA). "
Download or read book Dāna written by Ellison Banks Findly and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that donation is one of the central practices in early Buddhism for, without it, Buddhism would not havesurvived and flourished in the many centuriesof its development and expansion. Buddhist relationship between donors and renunciants developed quickly into a complex web that involves material life and the views about how to attend to it. Buddhist dana`s great success is due to the early and continuing use of accomodation with other faiths as a foundational value, thus allowing the tradition to adapt to changing circumstances.

Download or read book Imagining Medea written by Rena Fraden and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ain't no Dreamgirls," Rhodessa Jones warns participants in the Medea Project, the theater program for incarcerated women that she founded and directs. Her expectations are grounded in reality, tempered, for example, by the fact that women are the fastest growing population in U.S. prisons. Still, Jones believes that by engaging incarcerated women in the process of developing and staging dramatic works based on their own stories, she can push them toward tapping into their own creativity, confronting the problems that landed them in prison, and taking control of their lives. Rena Fraden chronicles the collaborative process of transforming incarcerated women's stories into productions that incorporate Greek mythology, hip-hop music, dance, and autobiography. She captures a diverse array of voices, including those of Jones and other artists, the sheriff and prison guards, and, most vividly, the women themselves. Through compelling narrative and thoughtful commentary, Fraden investigates the Medea Project's blend of art and activism and considers its limits and possibilities for enacting social change. Rhodessa Jones is co-artistic director of the San Francisco-based performance company Cultural Odyssey and founder of the Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women. An award-winning performer, she has taught at the Yale School of Drama and the New College of California.
