Book excerpt: This volume illustrates the development of art in Central Europe from 1830-1860- a period which begins in the age of Biedermeier but extends well beyond it. It shows by means of a selection of representative works how art at this time developed independently and was not restricted to the historical Biedermeier era. "Is that Biedermeier?", we often ask of pictures which date from the same period but do not look typically Biedermeier. The publication concentrates on these works in particular by showing the wide range of painting in the years between 1830-1860 through portraits, landscapes and genre pictures. The main focus lies on Austrian painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Rudolf von Alt and Friedrich von Amerling, together with artists from Northern Italy, Hungary, Bohemia and Slovenia including Giuseppe Tominz, József Borsos, Bedřich Havránek and Francesco Hayez. There are also references to the changes in style in furniture production at that time, which also demonstrated a remarkable diversity. Exhibition: Unteres Belvedere, Vienna, Austria (21.10.2016-12.02.2017).

Hanson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of the daily life, political climate and artistic institutions of Vienna on its musicians and musical tastes between 1815 and 1830. Emphasis is given to Beethoven, Schubert, Paganini and Johann Strauss where their careers reflect typically Viennese musical life and when Viennese conventions may explain important turns in their lives. Attention is also paid to the incomes, service contracts and welfare of lesser-known musicians of the same period. An entire chapter is devoted to the regulation of music by the Austrian government, secret police and censors, since this period coincides with the height of Metternich's political power. Although the study is mainly intended for music historians and listeners, the book should also interest the Austrian, literary, theatre and political historian. Furthermore, the research presented here suggests that many of the intriguing questions and social issues in Vienna at the end of the nineteenth century, currently widely discussed by Schorske, Toulim and McGrath, are already present in Vienna in 1815.

It was also the capital of an empire that was constantly at war in the composer's youth and that became a police state during his maturity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German Home Towns is a social biography of the hometown Bürger from the end of the seventeenth to the beginning of the twentieth centuries. After his opening chapters on the political, social, and economic basis of town life, Mack Walker traces a painful process of decline that, while occasionally slowed or diverted, leads inexorably toward death and, in the twentieth century, transfiguration. Along the way, he addresses such topics as local government, corporate economies, and communal society. Equally important, he illuminates familiar aspects of German history in compelling ways, including the workings of the Holy Roman Empire, the Napoleonic reforms, and the revolution of 1848. Finally, Walker examines German liberalism's underlying problem, which was to define a meaning of freedom that would make sense to both the "movers and doers" at the center and the citizens of the home towns. In the book's final chapter, Walker traces the historical extinction of the towns and their transformation into ideology. From the memory of the towns, he argues, comes Germans' "ubiquitous yearning for organic wholeness," which was to have its most sinister expression in National Socialism's false promise of a racial community. A path-breaking work of scholarship when it was first published in 1971, German Home Towns remains an influential and engaging account of German history, filled with interesting ideas and striking insights—on cameralism, the baroque, Biedermeier culture, legal history and much more. In addition to the inner workings of community life, this book includes discussions of political theorists like Justi and Hegel, historians like Savigny and Eichhorn, philologists like Grimm. Walker is also alert to powerful long-term trends—the rise of bureaucratic states, the impact of population growth, the expansion of markets—and no less sensitive to the textures of everyday life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together fifteen essays by scholars which were first presented at a conference held in Oxford in September 1997 to mark the bicentenary of Schubert's birth. This collection of essays examines a variety of aspects of cultural and social life in Austria in the first half of the nineteenth century but also explores the perpetuating of myths and stereotypes derived from those years and the ways in which the Biedermeier period continued to influence later generations, not least in their repeated attempts to create an image of the good old days based on the age of Schubert before the chaos of the 1848 revolution and the construction of the RingstraBe. Major figures from literature and culture are well represented (Grillparzer, Nestroy, Stifter, Bauernfeld) but an important focus of the volume is on lesser known writers who were responsible for the creation of the Biedermeier myth: Frankl, Bartsch, Lux and others. A further group of essays is concerned with general topics such as Austrian identity, the existence of a specifically Austrian strand of philosophy, and changing attitudes towards nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires and identities are constantly remodelled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, affects and (self-)knowledge on and off the screen. Building on Eve K. Sedgwick's queer-feminist concept of queer performativity, the author creates a historically situated model with which she traces various figures of technically anthropomorphic queer masculinity in the medium of film in an empowering sense. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit by Christiane König, published by J.B.Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The author (with the friendly support of Megan Hanson) has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavour to refine the work stylistically. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support authors.
