Book excerpt: South African artist Kendell Geers (1968, Johannesburg) has become one of the most controversial artists of our times. By blowing up museum walls and burning down statues, Geers has made a name for himself as aesthetic terrorist. Fear, violence, danger and sex are omnipresent in Geers' work.In concert with a European travelling exhibition, Geers presents IRRESPEKTIV, a fully illustrated monograph highlighting the main aspects of his oeuvre. The catalogue covers installations, photographs, drawings and performances from the beginning of his career until the present. IRRESPEKTIV includes texts by Lieven de Cauter and Rudi Laermans, Christine Macel, Warren Siebrits and Andrea Vinassa, and an interview between Jrme Sans and Kendell Geers. Published by BOM publishers in cooperation with the S.M.A.K. Book excerpt: "[The book] skilfully meshes together the written history of the city and its build environment with that which is less certain, less defined: the invisible and visible seams and ridges that hold the city together. ... We are presented with an array of books, documents, fictional accounts, personal memories, photographs (both original and archival), newspapers, pamphlets, obscure city council publications, surveys, plans, court proceedings and architectural objects. Using these materials, Kreutsfeldt and Malcomess ... take us on a visual and textual journey through the arrangements and specificities of Johannesburg over time and trace the cointours of the places and no-places that constitute the city as both concrete and imaginary."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark collection, world-renowned theorists, artists, critics, and curators explore new ways of conceiving the present and understanding art and culture in relation to it. They revisit from fresh perspectives key issues regarding modernity and postmodernity, including the relationship between art and broader social and political currents, as well as important questions about temporality and change. They also reflect on whether or not broad categories and terms such as modernity, postmodernity, globalization, and decolonization are still relevant or useful. Including twenty essays and seventy-seven images, Antinomies of Art and Culture is a wide-ranging yet incisive inquiry into how to understand, describe, and represent what it is to live in the contemporary moment. In the volume’s introduction the theorist Terry Smith argues that predictions that postmodernity would emerge as a global successor to modernity have not materialized as anticipated. Smith suggests that the various situations of decolonized Africa, post-Soviet Europe, contemporary China, the conflicted Middle East, and an uncertain United States might be better characterized in terms of their “contemporaneity,” a concept which captures the frictions of the present while denying the inevitability of all currently competing universalisms. Essays range from Antonio Negri’s analysis of contemporaneity in light of the concept of multitude to Okwui Enwezor’s argument that the entire world is now in a postcolonial constellation, and from Rosalind Krauss’s defense of artistic modernism to Jonathan Hay’s characterization of contemporary developments in terms of doubled and even para-modernities. The volume’s centerpiece is a sequence of photographs from Zoe Leonard’s Analogue project. Depicting used clothing, both as it is bundled for shipment in Brooklyn and as it is displayed for sale on the streets of Uganda, the sequence is part of a striking visual record of new cultural forms and economies emerging as others are left behind. Book excerpt: "It would make a beautiful ruin." Eero Saarinen Terminal 5 was a group show curated by Rachel K. Ward at Eero Saarinen's landmark 1962 TWA Terminal at JFK Airport. Originally scheduled to run from 28 September 2004 - 31 January 2005, the Port Authority closed the exhibition after the "controversial" opening night party. Initiated as a form of "dedication to the building" the exhibition explored themes drawn from the history and nature of travel, and responded to the significance of the architecture itself. The catalogue is a secondary site for participating artists, writers and critics to engage with ideas raised by the exhibition and air travel. Designed by David Reinfurt, ORG, it is divided into three sections: architectural history, exhibition information, and air travel related essays, and balances extensive visual material related to the site and the exhibition with critical and historical texts. The show included works by Vanessa Beecroft, Douglas Coupland, Kendell Geers, Dan Graham, Toland Grinnell, Fabrice Gygi, Mark Handforth, Jenny Holzer, Ryoji Ikeda, Just Another Rich Kid, Matthieu Laurette, Jonas Mekas, Aleksandra Mir, Jonathan Monk, Tom Sachs, Anri Sala, Tobias Wong, et al. Book excerpt: Contemporary Art: World Currents is the first comprehensive worldwide survey of contemporary art from the 1980s to the present day. Author Terry Smith argues that, in recent decades, a global shift from modern to contemporary art has occurred: artists everywhere have embraced the contemporary world's teeming multiplicity, its proliferating differences and its challenging complexities and new technologies. Alongside more than 350 carefully selected color images of key works, Terry Smith offers the first account of these changes, from their historical beginnings to the present day. Exploring key works by both well known and little-known artists, the author shows how contemporary art achieved definitive force in the markets and museums of the major art centres during the 1980s and then became a global phenomenon as artworlds everywhere began to connect more closely: new communicative technologies and expanding social media are now shaping the future of art. Contemporary Art: World Currents breaks new ground in tracing how modern, traditional and indigenous art became contemporary in each cultural region of the world, ranging across Western, East and Central Europe, North and South America and the Caribbean, Oceania, Africa, and the Middle East. Terry Smith lays the groundwork for a new comparative approach to contemporary art, emphasizing its relationships to all aspects of contemporary life. He argues that it is cultural diversity and individual artistic inventiveness, not a convergence towards sameness, which makes today's art contemporary. Contemporary Art: World Currents brings the subject right up-todate, highlighting the concerns of contemporary artists while giving the reader an invaluable insight to art today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last winter, a man tried to break Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain sculpture. The sculpted foot of Michelangelo’s David was damaged in 1991 by a purportedly mentally ill artist. With each incident, intellectuals must confront the unsettling dynamic between destruction and art. Renowned art historian Dario Gamboni is the first to tackle this weighty issue in depth, exploring specters of censorship, iconoclasm, and vandalism that surround such acts. Gamboni uncovers here a disquieting phenomenon that still thrives today worldwide. As he demonstrates through analyses of incidents occurring in nineteenth- and twentieth-century America and Europe, a complex relationship exists among the evolution of modern art, destruction of artworks, and the long history of iconoclasm. From the controversial removal of Richard Serra’s Tilted Arc from New York City’s Federal Plaza to suffragette protests at London’s National Gallery, Gamboni probes the concept of artist’s rights, the power of political protest and how iconoclasm sheds light on society’s relationship to art and material culture. Compelling and thought-provoking, The Destruction of Art forces us to rethink the ways that we interact with art and react to its power to shock or subdue.

Book excerpt: The diary and essays of Brian Eno republished twenty-five years on with a new introduction by the artist in a beautiful hardback edition.'One of the seminal books about music . . . an invaluable insight into the mind and working practices of one of the industry's undeniable geniuses.'GUARDIANAt the end of 1994, Brian Eno resolved to keep a diary. His plans to go to the cinema, theatre and galleries fell quickly to the wayside. What he did do - and write - however, was astonishing: ruminations on his collaborative work with David Bowie, U2, James and Jah Wobble, interspersed with correspondence and essays dating back to 1978. These 'appendices' covered topics from the generative and ambient music Eno pioneered to what he believed the role of an artist and their art to be, alongside adroit commentary on quotidian tribulations and happenings around the world. This beautiful 25th-anniversary hardcover edition has been redesigned in the same size as the diary that eventually became this book. It features two ribbons, pink paper delineating the appendices (matching the original edition) and a two-tone paper-over-board cover, which pays homage to the original design. An intimate insight into one of the most influential creative artists of our time, A Year with Swollen Appendices is an essential classic.
