Book excerpt: A racially charged murder pits the NY assistant DA against a flashy defense lawyer in an "irresistible" legal thriller by the bestselling author of Infamy (Publishers Weekly). It's the early '80s, and New York City is eating itself alive. The murder rate is skyrocketing, and Butch Karp, the battle-tested assistant district attorney in charge of the NYPD's homicide bureau, is the only thing standing between the city and chaos. And he's about to get pushed to the breaking point. As the bureau chief, Karp is not supposed to try cases himself, but he's about to make an exception. A wealthy suburbanite is accused of a series of murders in Harlem, and the case's racial implications threaten to set the city ablaze. Promising to get a conviction, Karp puts his reputation and his career on the line. His opponent is the country's most famous defense attorney, a notorious showman determined to use every trick in the book to get his client free, and destroy Butch Karp in the process. Before he became the New York Times-bestselling author of such legal thrillers as No Lesser Plea and Falsely Accused, Robert K. Tanenbaum was one of the most successful trial attorneys in New York City. Irresistible Impulse displays the grit, brains and brio that made him so successful. Irresistible Impulse is the 9th book in the Butch Karp and Marlene Ciampi series, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order. "Tannenbaum's snappy, electric ninth novel to feature the latter-day Hepburn and Tracy . . . the suspense here is Hitchcockian." --Publishers Weekly "Gripping." --Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis Munchausen by Proxy and Other Factitious Abuse by : Kathryn Artingstall
Download or read book Munchausen by Proxy and Other Factitious Abuse written by Kathryn Artingstall and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Munchausen and Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) though the terms have recently changed. The 2013 DSM-V—the update to the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) diagnostic and classification tool—has classified both Munchausen and MBP as "Factitious Systematic Abuse." While thought to have occurred primarily with children and their caregivers, recent research shows a more widespread problem: such medical abuse to spouses, the disabled, the elderly—even pets. Many involve repeat and long-term instances of hospital and medical fraud. This book covers the syndrome itself, interviewing and investigative aspects, victimology, as well indicators in the event of homicide and death.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Barbara Delinsky understands the power of the human heart as few others and she shares that gift in this touching novel of acceptance and fulfillment, first published in 1983. Sitting in a Vermont jury room, Abby Barnes is happy to be empaneled. The trial is a sensational headline-grabber, and the thought of being sequestered for a few weeks is appealing. The time away from a relationship that fails to excite her will give her a chance to think . . . and to make a long overdue decision. Then she meets fellow juror Ben Wyeth, a witty and charming college professor who shows Abby just what she's been missing. But although they share grueling days of grisly testimony and long nights of passion, there is a part of Ben that he can never share with Abby, or any woman. Just as the fate of an accused man lies in the balance, so too does Abby's, as she decides whether what Ben can give is enough . . . enough to last her a lifetime.

Their attackers appear sickly yet possess inhuman strength, and they transport Blake's family to an isolated compound. There, the three captives discover that the compound's residents have a highly contagious alien disease that has mutated their DNA to make them powerful, dangerous, and compelled to infect others. If Blake and his daughters do not escape, they will be infected with a virus that will either kill them outright or transform them into outcasts whose very existence is a threat to the world around them. In the following hours, Blake and his daughters each must make a vital choice: risk everything to escape and warn the rest of the world, or accept their new reality -- as well as the uncertain fate of the human race.
Book Synopsis A Short Treatise on the Metaphysics of Tsunamis by : Jean-Pierre Dupuy
Download or read book A Short Treatise on the Metaphysics of Tsunamis written by Jean-Pierre Dupuy and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1755 the city of Lisbon was destroyed by a terrible earthquake. Almost 250 years later, an earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean unleashed a tsunami whose devastating effects were felt over a vast area. In each case, a natural catastrophe came to be interpreted as a consequence of human evil. Between these two events, two indisputably moral catastrophes occurred: Auschwitz and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And yet the nuclear holocaust survivors likened the horror they had suffered to a natural disaster—a tsunami. Jean-Pierre Dupuy asks whether, from Lisbon to Sumatra, mankind has really learned nothing about evil. When moral crimes are unbearably great, he argues, our ability to judge evil is gravely impaired, and the temptation to regard human atrocity as an attack on the natural order of the world becomes irresistible. This impulse also suggests a kind of metaphysical ruse that makes it possible to convert evil into fate, only a fate that human beings may choose to avoid. Postponing an apocalyptic future will depend on embracing this paradox and regarding the future itself in a radically new way. The American edition of Dupuy’s classic essay, first published in 2005, also includes a postscript on the 2011 nuclear accident that occurred in Japan, again as the result of a tsunami.

Download or read book Bordeaux written by Paul Torday and published by HMH. This book was released on 2009-01-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel about a wine enthusiast’s descent into addiction, and “the cheerful face that money can put on an unhappy life” (Publishers Weekly). After dedicating countless hours to building his software company—an effort that yields him a fortune—Wilberforce walks into a London restaurant, alone, and orders an extraordinarily expensive 1982 Cháteau Pétrus. It is quite an experience—so he asks for another bottle. From the acclaimed author of Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, this novel traces the journey that leads Wilberforce from the top of the world to hitting rock bottom as he revels in his newfound wealth and more: his taste for the finer things, a love affair, and a variety of friendships, including one with an eccentric and enigmatic wine merchant named Francis Black. At some point along the way, Wilberforce, once an ordinary middle-class child and then a driven, lonely workaholic, convinces himself that he’s finally found the good life. But as his story unspools, he learns that Black’s cellar holds some unpalatable secrets, and that passion comes at a price. “A heart-wrenching tale . . . A mesmerising page-turner.” —The Mail on Sunday “Although Wilberforce’s tale carries universal moral significance, wine lovers in particular will find Torday’s descriptive and narrative powers compelling.” —Booklist
Download or read book Insanity written by Charles Patrick Ewing and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-07 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The insanity defense is one of the oldest fixtures of the Anglo-American legal tradition. Though it is available to people charged with virtually any crime, and is often employed without controversy, homicide defendants who raise the insanity defense are often viewed by the public and even the legal system as trying to get away with murder. Often it seems that legal result of an insanity defense is unpredictable, and is determined not by the defendants mental state, but by their lawyers and psychologists influence. From the thousands of murder cases in which defendants have claimed insanity, Doctor Ewing has chosen ten of the most influential and widely varied. Some were successful in their insanity plea, while others were rejected. Some of the defendants remain household names years after the fact, like Jack Ruby, while others were never nationally publicized. Regardless of the circumstances, each case considered here was extremely controversial, hotly contested, and relied heavily on lengthy testimony by expert psychologists and psychiatrists. Several of them played a major role in shaping the criminal justice system as we know it today. In this book, Ewing skillfully conveys the psychological and legal drama of each case, while providing important and fresh professional insights. For the legal or psychological professional, as well as the interested reader, Insanity will take you into the minds of some of the most incomprehensible murderers of our age.

Download or read book Irresistible Faith written by Scott Sauls and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I love everything that Scott Sauls writes." -- Christine Caine What if Christians became the best advertisement for Jesus? Jesus said his followers would be a light to the world and a city on a hill--a warmly inviting, neighbor-loving, grace- and truth-filled destination for all. He envisioned his followers as life-giving neighbors, bosses, employees, and friends, the kind of people who return insults with kindness and persecution with prayers. Rooted in biblical convictions, they would extend love, empathy, and care to one another as well as to those who don't share their beliefs. Over time their movement would become irresistible to every nation, tribe, and tongue. Irresistible Faith is a blueprint for pursuing this vision in our current moment, of redeemed individuals and a renewed community working for a restored world. This is a way of being that gives a tired, cynical world good reason to pause and reconsider Christianity--and to start wishing it was true. "I miss the kind of church Scott describes in this book, and I don’t think I am alone." -- Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz and Building a StoryBrand "An important call to resist the urge to lobby and position ourselves, but rather to be driven by gospel-powered love." -- Raechel Myers, founder and CEO of She Reads Truth "An antidote to much that is wrong with our Western, American version of Christianity. " -- Gabe and Rebekah Lyons, authors and founders of Q
