While ocean basin surveys of iron concentration have revealed important sources to the ocean, questions remain regarding the controls on supply of this critical micronutrient to productive planktonic ecosystems. Using a combination of oceanographic-scale observations and mechanistic experiments, work in this thesis seeks to advance our understanding of controls of new and regenerated iron supply to coastal polar and temperate ecosystems and microbially-mediated cycling in such marine environments. In Chapter 2 we comprehensively characterized the cryospheric inputs of iron to Andvord Bay, a cold glaciomarine fjord located on the west Antarctic Peninsula. Iron content and speciation were measured to characterize inter-seasonal changes in the water column, a subglacial meltwater plume and glacial ice, fjord sediments, including a first assessment of iron-binding organic ligands in a highly productive fjord environment. We utilized multi-elemental analyses to understand the cycling of iron sources. Results from a high-resolution numerical model revealed episodic atmospheric forcing events are important for supplying subglacial meltwater to the surface, and for the export of surface meltwater and associated iron away from the coast. In Chapter 3 we characterize iron supply and cycling in a coastal upwelling filament, a mesoscale feature which commonly occurs during times of intensified along-shore winds in eastern boundary current systems, such as the southern California Current. We used a Lagrangian framework to capture the biogeochemical evolution of a filament, including: the development of iron-limitation of the phytoplankton community, assessment of in situ geochemical proxies of iron stress, and impacts of diminishing iron flux on phytoplankton allometric ratios, namely the biogenic silica-to-organic carbon content of diatoms. We have determined filaments are not likely significant sources of dissolved iron to the open ocean, yet their importance for advecting particulate iron remains to be tested. Coincident with the development of iron-limitation of the phytoplankton community we observed greater biogenic silica-to-organic carbon ratios and enhanced export efficiency to depth. In Chapter 4, within microcosm a field experiment, we examined the production of organic iron-binding ligands during remineralization--an important process supplying iron regenerated from phytoplankton blooms. As a part of this work we developed an improved data processing methods for multiple analytical windows electrochemical iron ligand titration data, enabling more robust detection of distinct pools of iron-binding ligands produced by heterotrophic bacteria and in diverse oceanic waters. Together, this work examines the processes involved in the flux of new iron to the ocean, and internal transformations affecting its fate within the water column. We hope this work results in an improved understanding of the controls on modern iron supply and ties to the marine biogeochemical cycles of macronutrients.

Book excerpt: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a spatially pervasive phenomenon that adds freshwater, nutrients, dissolved metals, bacteria, and other constituents to the coastal ocean. This dissertation investigated SGD-related inputs of nutrients and fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and Enterococcus sp.) to coastal waters in two Hawaiian locations, the north shore of Kaua'i and the Kona coast of Hawai'i. Concentrations of caffeine, which has been used previously as a wastewater tracer, were measured in groundwater and surface water on the north shore of Kaua'i. Both study areas have relatively light levels of urban and agricultural development, and maintaining good water quality is essential for their tourism-based economies, coral reefs, fisheries, and traditional way of life. Radium (Ra), an element with naturally elevated concentrations in coastal groundwater, was used as an SGD tracer and a mass-balance approach was used to quantify SGD. On the north shore of Kaua'i, agriculture was associated with higher nitrate + nitrite concentrations in the fresh SGD component, while phosphate and silica appeared to be controlled by geological differences in aquifer substrate. High ammonium concentrations in the fresh SGD component at one site may have been caused by a leaky cesspool. In Kona, no relation between urban development or agriculture and groundwater nutrient concentrations was observed, but bare lava rock was associated with higher nitrate + nitrite and silica concentrations in fresh SGD. Sites closer to golf courses also had higher nitrate + nitrite concentrations. Conservative estimates of total SGD on the north shore of Kaua'i ranged from 1.3 to 7.8 L per meter per minute, or up to 10% of Hanalei River discharge, and SGD contributed significant nitrate + nitrite inputs to Hanalei Bay. Estimates of SGD in Kona ranged from 5 to 1200 L per meter per minute, with between 10 and 100% of the brackish SGD comprised by the fresh SGD component. SGD-related water and nutrient fluxes on the Kona Coast -- where no rivers and streams are present -- were large compared to those reported for other sites worldwide. Caffeine concentrations in environmental waters on the north shore of Kaua'i ranged from 0-88 ng/L, on the low end of what has been reported for other locations. Metribuzin, an herbicide, was also detected at concentrations from 4-11 ng/L in five groundwater and surface water samples. A sensitivity analysis of Ra-based methods of estimating water ages and coastal mixing rates revealed that water ages shorter than 3 d cannot be estimated with confidence using Ra-based methods, even if the only uncertainty considered is analytical error. In conclusion, this dissertation provides new data about SGD and related inputs of nutrients and bacteria to Hawaiian coastal waters, suggests that even low levels of development may influence nutrient concentrations in coastal groundwater, presents the first caffeine concentrations measured in environmental water samples collected in a tropical setting, and explores the limits of applicability of Ra-based methods of estimating water ages and coastal mixing rates, providing guidance for researchers conducting Ra-based SGD studies in the future.

A portion of this book also concerns bloom-forming cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea area. Filamentous cyanobacteria are important as primary producers and for the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen and thus are significant in global cycling of both of these elements. In recent years, through the application of new techniques and intensive multi-disciplinary research programs, progress has been made in understanding both the biology of these cyanobacteria and their place in the marine food web. A broad range of topics is covered in this book, ranging from molecular biology, physiology, ultrastructure, enzyme localization, toxicology, remote sensing, buoyancy, herbivory and the ecology of these organisms in the marine food web. This volume is an outgrowth of a NATO-sponsored meeting held in May 1991 in Bamberg, Germany, and represents the latest synthesis on these marine phytoplankters.
