Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron Ship-Building: With Practical Illustrations The Object of the communication was to institute an inquiry into the advantages to be derived from employ ing iron as a material for building ships, and to com pare such vessels with those built Of timber. The paper was subsequently published in the form of a pamphlet, with plates, and was favourably noticed in all the publications of the day. The time seems to be favourable for resuming the subject, and for laying before the public such further information as the last fifteen years have so amply provided. Book excerpt: Bath Iron Works was established by Gen. Thomas Hyde in 1884 and launched its first ship in 1891. Since then, the shipyard on the Kennebec River has built dozens of luxurious yachts, hardworking freighters, tugs, trawlers, lightships, and more than two hundred twenty warships for the U.S. Navy. Today, Bath Iron Works continues a shipbuilding tradition that began nearly four hundred years ago when the first ship built in America was constructed just a few miles downriver from Bath. Bath Iron Works showcases a unique collection of photographs that provides a rare view inside one of the nation's great shipyards. The book shows the yard's origins in a few simple buildings, its expansion into a modern shipbuilding facility, and its rapid growth into an industrial powerhouse during World War II. During these years, Bath Iron Works produced famous ships such as the America's Cup defender Ranger, the yachts Aras and Hi-Esmaro, the record-setting destroyer USS Lamson, and fully one fourth of all destroyers built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Bath Iron Works gives an insider's view of these great vessels and many others, as skilled craftspeople turn raw materials into complex ships, each uniquely suited to its purpose. This collection of shipbuilding photographs brings to life the proud history of Bath Iron Works.

Book excerpt: Merchant, industrialist and explorer Trassan Kressind has an audacious plan – combining the might of magic and iron in the heart of a great ship to navigate an uncrossed ocean, seeking the city of the extinct Morfaan to uncover the secrets of their lost sciences. Ambition runs strongly in the Kressind family, and for each of Trassan’s siblings fate beckons. Soldier Rel is banished to a vital frontier, bureaucrat Garten balances responsibility with family loyalty, sister Katriona is determined to carve herself a place in a world of men, outcast Guis struggles to contain the energies of his soul, while priest Aarin dabbles in forbidden sorcery. The world is in turmoil as new money brings new power, and the old social order crumbles. And as mankind’s arts grow stronger, a terror from the ancient past awakens... This highly original fantasy depicts a unique world, where tired gods walk industrial streets and the tide’s rise and fall is extreme enough to swamp continents. Magic collides with science to create a rich backdrop for intrigue and adventure in the opening book of this epic saga.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... t SPECIFICATIONS. Having endeavoured to illustrate the plain and ordinary modes of Iron Ship-building, I reserve for the conclusion a few Specifications of various Steam and Sailing vessels. One of these is strictly in accordance with the last published regulations of Lloyd's, and by following the rules there laid down, it is not difficult to discover the correct scantling required for different sized vessels which are to be classed at Lloyd's. The remainder are chosen rather to show instances of vessels which, though differing from Lloyd's rules in many essential points, have nevertheless stood well, and may therefore be useful guides to those who have occasion to construct vessels for peculiar purposes, and wish for examples to guide them. I could wish to have enlarged this section of my work, but, without the permission of either the owners or the builders, I did not feel myself at liberty to insert some examples that would have been valuable for the objects above-named: other cases, which it was in my power to give, did not afford sufficient interest or variety. Iron Work of a London Biver Steamer. Dimensions, Se.--Length on deck, 126 ft.; breadth, 13 ft.; depth of hold, 7 ft.; draught of water to be 2 ft. 6 in., with machinery and coals on board. A bar of half-round iron to run all round the gunwale strake and along the sponsons. Frames to be of 2x2 in. angle-iron, spaced 18 in. apart in centre of the vessel, widening out at both ends of the vessel to 24 inches.
