Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990, Anna-Marie left her disappointing Midwestern childhood behind and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18 to pursue her heavy metal dreams on the Sunset Strip. Bands like Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, and Guns N' Roses were at the height of their popularity, and she landed right in the middle of the heavy-metal music scene. Welcomed by sunshine and possibilities, her California adventure began the very first day she arrived in magical Laurel Canyon. Soon, she was working in the music industry, and then for Metal Blade Records. Working with her favorite bands and witnessing music history was a dream come true. But - things were not all as they seemed. Grunge music had arrived from Seattle, and it was taking over the metal scene. Los Angeles turned into a dark force, forcing her to make tough choices in order to survive. This is a story of big magic, following your heart, and starting over. Anna-Marie is a real-life librarian, and a lifelong fan of heavy metal and rock music. This is Adventures of a Metalhead Librarian.

Book excerpt: Burial rites and associated events can provide a unique insight into the attitudes and beliefs of diverse communities at any given moment in time. This book--the outcome of forty years of research--takes an interdisciplinary approach to burial practices in Ireland in order to interpret and to chart the development of burial rites as they appear in the archaeological record of the late Iron Age (c.200 BC-AD 300) and early medieval period (c.AD 400-800). Sources used include archaeological excavation evidence, c14 (radiocarbon) dating evidence, strontium and oxygen isotope evidence for movement of peoples, and osteo-archaeological evidence. This is combined with a careful and discerning examination of references to death, burial, and associated events that appear in Irish hagiography, penitentials, laws, and canons compiled during the seventh and eighth centuries. Topics covered include: the transition from cremation to inhumation, re-use of ancient ancestral burial places, occasional use of grave-goods, funeral feasts, atypical or deviant burials, mobility of people within and into Ireland, the exceptional burials of some women, the cessation of burial of Christians among their ancestors, and burial in early Church cemeteries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1955 six-year-old Mark O’Brien moved his arms and legs for the last time. He came out of a coma to find himself enclosed from the neck down in an iron lung, the machine in which he would live for much of the rest of his life. For the first time in paperback, How I Became a Human Being is O’Brien’s account of his struggles to lead an independent life despite a lifelong disability. In 1955 he contracted polio and became permanently paralyzed from the neck down. O’Brien describes growing up without the use of his limbs, his adolescence struggling with physical rehabilitation and suffering the bureaucracy of hospitals and institutions, and his adult life as an independent student and writer. Despite his physical limitations, O’Brien crafts a narrative that is as rich and vivid as the life he led.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revered as the most prestigious tournament in golf, the Masters commands international attention, even among nongolfers. The first and second editions of The Masters: A Hole-by-Hole History of America’s Golf Classic took the unique approach of tackling Augusta National hole by hole. Each hole had its own chapter, with colorful stories on the greatest shots, biggest disasters, and most amazing events that took place on each. David Sowell returns to Augusta with the third edition of The Masters, adding more history and updating each hole with additional stories of greatness and tales of woe for a new generation of golfers led by Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and Patrick Reed, as well as from an older guard represented by Bubba Watson, Adam Scott, and Sergio García. The legends of the Masters are in full force in this lively look at America’s golf classic. From Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen to Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth, all the greatest Masters moments of the greatest—and not so great—golfers are here in one book. This third edition provides a rich historical view of the course where success breeds legends and where failure can haunt even the most brilliant golfer’s career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: his volume forms part of a continuing initiative by Wayne R. Kime to make available the writings of Fitz-James O'Brien (1828-1862), an Irish-American literary man who during his lifetime won reputation as one of the most talented young authors in the United States, but who has been all but forgotten since. It follows Fitz-James O'Brien: Selected Literary Journalism, 1852-1860 (Susquehanna University Press, 2003) and Behind the Curtain: Selected Fiction of Fitz-James O'Brien (University of Delaware Press and Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2011), both edited by Kime. Like its predecessors, the volume offers evidence that "not only for his vivid contemporaneity but also for his originality, range, and technical skill" (Fitz-James O'Brien: Selected Literary Journalism, 10), O'Brien's claim to lasting memory was well justified. Thirteen Stories by Fitz-James O'Brien: The Realm of Mind presents a group of works that explore one of the author's special interests, the representation of individual consciousness. All but three of the stories are reprinted here for the first time. The works are arranged chronologically, by date of publication, under five headings: Expanded Faculties ("The Old Boy," "The Spider's Eye," "Seeing the World"), Induced Visions ("The Hasheesh Eater," "Broadway Bedeviled"), New Knowledge ("Mr. Grubbe's Night with Memnon," "The Golden Ingot," "How I Overcame My Gravity"), Love and Hate ("Number 101," "Jubal, the Ringer"), and Dreams ("A Terrible Night," "The Crystal Bell," "From Hand to Mouth"). A general introduction, brief introductions to the individual stories, and explanatory notes complement the reprinted texts. The volume has been designed to appeal to both general and specialist readers.
