Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining and Manufacturing Advantages at Bessemer in the Heart of Mineral Alabama The geology of Alabama shows the existence at Bessemer of a mountain of fossiliferous hematite or red fossiliferous iron ore. This mountain, which is a range of mountains, forming the southeast boundary of the valley in which Bessemer is located, is within a stone's throw of the corporate limits of the city (as will be seen from the map attached) and has a varying height above the valley of from two hundred and fifty to five hundred feet. The ore is in regular veins or stratas varying in thickness from five to twenty feet, with medium partings, aggregating at this point a thickness of forty feet iron ore within a sixty foot measurement at right angles to their direction. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Alabama Industrial and Scientific Society, Vol. 1 The movements of the earth's crust in this region have brought in close proximity the necessary material for the mak ing of iron. The work of the geologist has been to show where these materials lie, and of the chemist to give their elements and value. The civil engineer has traced upon the ground our lines of transportation, the mining engineer has shown us how to extract our ores and coal and limestone, and the mechanical engineer has devised for us the requisite machinery. The practical men of our State have, with these scientific aids, brought about an industrial success within the last fifteen years that is marvellous, and one that cannot be paralleled in any section of our country. The statistics in regard to the progress of our development are interesting, but as they are published and accessible to all, I will not occupy the time of the Society with them. The development has but started. The increase of produc tion for the next fifteen years will be as remarkable as in the past, but more than an increase of production is required to give our section the success it is entitled to. Our iron must be transfused here from its crude condition into finished articles, whether they be pots and pans or rails and engines. This is a self-evident proposition and will soon be an accomplished fact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: When cotton was king and Jackson was president, Daniel Hillman built a bloomery forge on Roupes Creek near the Jefferson and Tuscaloosa County line. As the birthplace of the Birmingham Iron and Steel District, the forge grew into an important battery of three blast furnaces capable of producing 22 tons of iron daily for Confederate munitions. The Tannehill Furnaces--the handiwork of Moses Stroup, one of the South's leading ironmasters--are among the best preserved 19th-century ironworks in America. Along with the Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama, the furnace ruins form the centerpiece of Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, which attracts 400,000 visitors annually. It is Alabama's most visited Civil War site.
