Book excerpt: The 'Handbook of Home Rule: Being Articles on the Irish Question' stands as a seminal anthology that brings together a diverse array of perspectives on a pivotal historical moment: the struggle for Irish Home Rule. Its collection spans various literary styles including essays, historical analysis, and personal narratives, reflecting the multifaceted nature of the debate. This anthology not only explores the political and social dimensions of Home Rule but also delves into the nuanced arguments for and against it, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the issue's complexity. The works within capture the zeitgeist of a period marked by fervent advocacy and opposition, providing invaluable insights into the era's political discourse. The contributors to this volume, including figures such as John Morley, Viscount James Bryce Bryce, and W. E. Gladstone, among others, are distinguished not only by their direct involvement in the political debates of the time but also by their profound impact on the literary and intellectual landscapes of the era. Their collective contributions offer a rich tapestry of thought that spans various aspects of the Irish Question, from legal intricacies to ethical considerations. This anthology aligns with and contributes to the broader political, cultural, and literary movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, encapsulating the dynamic and often contentious dialogue surrounding Home Rule. 'Readers seeking to immerse themselves in the historical and ideological currents that shaped the debate on Irish Home Rule will find in this anthology a treasure trove of insights and perspectives. The 'Handbook of Home Rule' is not merely a collection of texts; it is a gateway to understanding the complex political and cultural narratives that have influenced the course of Irish history. Ideal for scholars, students, and anyone with a keen interest in Irish politics and history, this volume offers a unique opportunity to explore a significant historical dialogue through the varied lenses of its most articulate commentators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long nineteenth century, arguably the most significant period in Irish history, is marked by a series of events that changed the political landscape of the nation forever and gave rise to art and ideas of international importance. At one end of this tumultuous period, we have Grattan’s Parliament, the United Irishmen, the Rebellion of 1798 led by Wolfe Tone, and the Union of 1801, and at the other, the fall of Parnell, the Easter Rising, Civil War and partition. Between times there are the great hinge events of Catholic Emancipation, the Famine, and the Land War. From Wolfe Tone to Maud Gonne, Ireland went through a period of enormous upheaval that carved out the culture and politics of the modern nation. Irish Studies has not yet fully engaged with the range and richness of this material, nor have critics in the various Anglophone literary fields grasped the extent to which Irish and Scottish events and authors contributed decisively to the development of their own areas. Bringing together an international line-up of established and emerging scholars, Romantic Ireland: From Tone to Gonne takes Irish Studies in new directions, in particular in terms of a cross-cultural comparison with Scotland and the distinct phenomenon of Unionism, thus breaking out of the double binds of Anglo-Irish approaches. The Irish-Scottish interface throws up fascinating insights that enhance our awareness of the interaction between colonialism, nationalism and culture. All of the major figures of the period are represented here, from Edgeworth and Moore to Yeats and Synge, but there are other, often less noticed but hugely significant writers, such as Charles Robert Maturin, Dion Boucicault and May Laffan. There are non-Irish commentators on Ireland like Cobbett and Engels, as well as a series of key Scottish figures – including Burns and Scott – in addition to lesser-known or lesser-noticed Scottish writers with strong Irish interests such as R. M. Ballantyne and Robert Tannahill – whose work opens up new and promising avenues into Irish writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goldwin Smith (1823-1910) was a celebrated, transatlantic writer on current events, politics, religion, history, and literature. While he made his academic mark teaching at Oxford, Cornell, and later as a resident guru at Toronto, his facile pen earned him a far greater reputation with general readers throughout the English-speaking world. Determined to rouse concern over issues that he deemed to be important to the advancement of humanity, Smith was deemed the controversialist by the Dictionary of National Biography. A study of his life and his writings provides new insight into liberalism, anti-semitism, the role of the journalist, and other aspects of life in late 19th century North America and Britain. As a public intellectual, Goldwin Smith spoke out on a variety of issues, frequently provoking intense debate. Phillips argues that the core of Smith's thought and the driving force behind his role as a controversialist lay in his moral philosophy, which provided a sense of direction to Smith's many and sometimes disparate writings and activities. This study will also probe the serious dilemma posed by Smith's path to agnosticism in the last decades of his life. By moving to a position of virtual unbelief, Smith risked damage not only to his carefully-crafted public persona, but also to a life's work as an impassioned moralist.
