This volume, her third based upon the 1850 census, specifies about 2,600 persons of New England or Mid-Atlantic birth who were living in South Carolina in that census year. The census enumerators found approximately 2,600 of these Yankees living in South Carolina in 1850, two-thirds of them from the Mid-Atlantic region. Mrs. Motes transcribed her information from thirteen reels of microfilm covering the 29 South Carolina counties in 1850. She has arranged those findings in alphabetical order by surname. Each individual is identified by age, sex, occupation, country of birth, county of residence, and household enumeration number. Individuals living in another family's household are further identified according to the name of the household head, even if a native Carolinian. The front matter to the book includes a helpful author's preface and a list of South Carolina county codes. The volume concludes with indexes to names, places, and occupation.

Book excerpt: The only comprehensive study of Irish immigrants in the nineteenth-century South, this book makes a valuable contribution to the story of the Irish in America and to our understanding of southern culture. The Irish who migrated to the Old South struggled to make a new home in a land where they were viewed as foreigners and were set apart by language, high rates of illiteracy, and their own self-identification as temporary exiles from famine and British misrule. They countered this isolation by creating vibrant, tightly knit ethnic communities in the cities and towns across the South where they found work, usually menial jobs. Finding strength in their communities, Irish immigrants developed the confidence to raise their voices in the public arena, forcing native southerners to recognize and accept them--first politically, then socially. The Irish integrated into southern society without abandoning their ethnic identity. They displayed their loyalty by fighting for the Confederacy during the Civil War and in particular by opposing the Radical Reconstruction that followed. By 1877, they were a unique part of the "Solid South." Unlike the Irish in other parts of the United States, the Irish in the South had to fit into a regional culture as well as American culture in general. By following their attempts to become southerners, we learn much about the unique experience of ethnicity in the American South.

Book excerpt: In 1772, Ireland was still under the feudal system, where wealthy barons owned all the land and tenant farmers had to pay them rent. The Reverend William Martin spoke about this. Members of his church had been reduced to poverty because of the need to pay these excessive rents. He therefore proposed that they pool their resources, charter ships and sail to South Carolina where free land was available. Originally, just a few planned to go. But, as word spread, huge numbers joined the group. It eventually came to 467 families, or five boatloads. This book provides the history of these voyages, the names of the passengers, and documents the land they received and the places where they ultimately settled in South Carolina. The ancestors of the author were among the more than one thousand passengers who arrived on these five ships. Many of them joined the American Revolution and fought against the British when the Revolutionary War broke out three years later.

Examining insanity in both an institutional and a community context, Peter McCandless shows how policies and attitudes changed dramatically from the colonial era to the early twentieth century. He also sheds new light on the ways sectionalism and race affected the plight of the insane in a state whose fortunes worsened markedly after the Civil War. Antebellum asylum reformers in the state were inspired by many of the same ideals as their northern counterparts, such as therapeutic optimism and moral treatment. But McCandless shows that treatment ideologies in South Carolina, which had a majority black population, were complicated by the issue of race, and that blacks received markedly inferior care. By re-creating the different experiences of the insane--black and white, inside the asylum and within the community--McCandless highlights the importance of regional variation in the treatment of mental illness.
