From the opening of the first full-time cinemas in Ireland during 1909-1914 until the multiplex boom of the 1990s and 2000s, Irish cinema-going has been a complex intersection of social, cultural, and business practices. As well as providing an annotated listing of every known significant film venue that has operated in Ireland since the beginning of cinema in the late 19th century, the book traces in forensic detail the nature of the Irish cinema phenomenon, and, in utilizing a range of previously unexplored primary sources from film trade publications to cinema records, it provides the first extensive account of a whole Irish business sector, including the key personnel involved. In the process, issues of cultural and social geography are explored. Hays tried a variety of ways to regulate movies before adopting what became known as the production code. Written in 1930 by a St Louis priest, the code stipulated that movies stress proper behaviour, respect for government, and 'Christian values'. The Catholic Church reinforced these efforts by launching its Legion of Decency in 1934. Intended to force Hays and Hollywood to censor films, the Legion of Decency engineered the appointment of Joseph Breen as head of the Production Code Administration. For the next three decades, Breen, Hays, and the Catholic Legion of Decency virtually controlled the content of all Hollywood films.

In locating cinema in relation to popular and elite culture during a key period of Irish history, it draws in particular on surviving films and photographs; articles and illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and trade journals; contemporary accounts; and official documents. Working against approaches that see early cinema as a precursor to the so-called 'classical' cinema of the 1920s onwards, it provide its readers with a wealth of contemporary material that allows them to see early cinema in its own terms as an evolving (audio-) visual form.
