Book excerpt: For 700 years the Ascendancy dominated Ireland: landlords built their great houses, landscaped their parks and spent wealth gathered from rents, before disappearing in the 20th century. Making use of letters, diaries, memoirs, estate documents, inventories, travellers' tales and family reminiscences, Peter Somerville-Large examines the lifestyle of the so-called rural sovereigns, describing the elegance, discomfort, and danger associated with castle and mansion, and the lives of many famous figures who created or inhabited the great houses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gripping story of the tumultuous destruction of the Irish country house, spanning the revolutionary years of 1912 to 1923 During the Irish Revolution nearly three hundred country houses were burned to the ground. These “Big Houses” were powerful symbols of conquest, plantation, and colonial oppression, and were caught up in the struggle for independence and the conflict between the aristocracy and those demanding access to more land. Stripped of their most important artifacts, most of the houses were never rebuilt and ruins such as Summerhill stood like ghostly figures for generations to come. Terence Dooley offers a unique perspective on the Irish Revolution, exploring the struggles over land, the impact of the Great War, and why the country mansions of the landed class became such a symbolic target for republicans throughout the period. Dooley details the shockingly sudden acts of occupation and destruction—including soldiers using a Rembrandt as a dart board—and evokes the exhilaration felt by the revolutionaries at seizing these grand houses and visibly overturning the established order.

Book excerpt: While researching the first Irish Country Houses, David encountered beautiful portraits of former residents in aging mansions and has now compiled a collection of these wonderful stories and photographs. Behind the faces are tales of happiness and misfortune, of royalty, politicians, literary and artistic figures, of scandals and hunt balls. The houses, such as Antrim Castle, Moore Abbey, Lissadell, and Avondale, were built to impress. Many owners were patrons of the arts and commissioned the best artists such as William Orpen, Walter Osborne, and Sarah Purser. Now these portraits capture a way of life that no longer exists and each chapter paints a picture of a bygone age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Shane Leslie once wrote that 'Country life was entirely organized to give nobility and gentry and demi-gentry a good time.'0Throughout Ireland and Britain the country house was a centre of hospitality, entertainment and leisure, with the hosting of house parties, soirees and balls. Pastimes included photography, painting, astronomy and taxidermy. Outdoors the parkland was used for a variety of sporting activities including archery, cricket, croquet and shooting, as well as local sports events, and beyond the demesne activities included hunting, horse racing and yachting. In Ireland demesne lands were developed as golf courses and estates offered land to the nationalist-dominated Gaelic Athletic Association for football and hurling.0This volume provides fresh and original insights into how leisure and sport underpinned the social hierarchy of country houses and their local communities in Ireland and Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Book excerpt: For over a hundred years Country Life has been publishing definitive articles on the country houses of Great Britain and Ireland, illustrated with specially commissioned photography by some of the century' s pre-eminent architectural photographers. Taken predominantly on glass plate negatives, the beauty and comprehensiveness of these illustrations is without equal, making the Country Life photographic archive a truly amazing resource. After the turn of the twentieth century, the growing interest in Georgian architecture led Country Life' s writers to explore the unique to the development of the eighteenth-century house contribution made by Irish architects and craftsmen. However, as the pace of loss and destruction of so many houses quickened in the middle of the century, the magazine' s photographs became an increasingly important, sometimes unique, record of what had gone. Here Seá n O' Reilly, one of Ireland' s leading architectural historians, has selected two hundred of the archive' s most outstanding photographs and provided the essential historical background required for an appreciation of some of Ireland' s greatest buildings, making this book not only an important survey, but also a portfolio of classic photographs of unrivalled beauty and significance.

For these are the history of the place, of the estate, of the village or town, of the townland, of its farms and holdings...celebrates above all the ability of such places to transform themselves, time after time." -- Irish Examine *** "From academics interested in accessing some of the latest research in the field of historic house, estate and demesne landscape studies, to those involved in the management and running of these houses as educational facilities and tourist attractions, to local and state authorities and the general public, this well illustrated, very readable book comes highly recommended." -- Irish Literary Supplement [Subject: History, Irish Studies]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1850 there were perhaps 2000 country houses in Ireland. Standing at the heart of its demesne, each Big House dominated its locality, but by the end of the 20th century, only a few hundred survived intact. No more than a handful were still in the possession of their original owners, or contained many of their original contents, including a substantial library. In some cases, this might well have been the only library in the district, though whether it was a carefully assembled collection or a haphazard accumulation of ancestral books would have varied from place to place. The National Trust in what is now Northern Ireland is responsible for most of the survivors. These collections have survived almost like time capsules, never subject to atmospheric pollution or the attentions of reforming librarians, and not heavily used in modern times. Many of their books contain the bookplates and ownership inscriptions of their long-dead owners, as well as instructions to binders, handwritten marginal notes and prices, and even the odd pressed flower; most are also in their original bindings. Together these features tell us a good deal about the tastes and interests of the people who owned them, and about the use, abuse and circulation of print across the whole of Ireland over a period of more than 400 years. Drawing on a wide range of previously untapped sources and evidence from the collections themselves, this lavishly-illustrated book is a must for anyone interested in the history of reading, collecting or country houses in Ireland.
