Book Synopsis The Political Philosophy of Muhammad Iqbal by : Iqbal Singh Sevea
Download or read book The Political Philosophy of Muhammad Iqbal written by Iqbal Singh Sevea and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects upon the political philosophy of Muhammad Iqbal, a towering intellectual figure in South Asian history, revered by many for his poetry and his thought. He lived in India in the twilight years of the British Empire and, apart from a short but significant period studying in the West, he remained in Punjab until his death in 1938. The book studies Iqbal's critique of nationalist ideology and his attempts to chart a path for the development of the 'nation' by liberating it from the centralizing and homogenizing tendencies of the modern state structure. Iqbal frequently clashed with his contemporaries over his view of nationalism as 'the greatest enemy of Islam'. He constructed his own particular interpretation of Islam - forged through an interaction with Muslim thinkers and Western intellectual traditions - that was ahead of its time, and since his death both modernists and Islamists have continued to champion his legacy.

Book Synopsis New Dimensions of Politics in India by : Lawrence Saez
Download or read book New Dimensions of Politics in India written by Lawrence Saez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-04 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following India’s general election in May 2009, this book undertakes a critical evaluation of the performance of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). It presents a thorough analysis of the UPA coalition government, and by providing an understanding of the new innovations in the UPA’s policies, the book goes on to evaluate the effectiveness of these policies against their aims and objectives. This book suggests that there is an analytical framework for assessing the political consequences of the policies and the UPA’s success, both at the national and state levels, with particular reference to new policies in governance, secularism and security. These three areas constitute important fault lines between the main national political parties in India, and provide an interesting point of departure to explore the new emerging trends, as well as the strong underlying continuities between the UPA administration and its predecessors. The book offers new insights into the structure of Indian politics, and is a useful contribution to studies in South Asian Politics, Governance and Political Parties.
Book Synopsis Modalities of the Translation-Ideology Nexus by : Jamil Asghar Jami
Download or read book Modalities of the Translation-Ideology Nexus written by Jamil Asghar Jami and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intellectually vigorous and critically engaging study provides a cultural and linguistic critique of V. G. Kiernan’s translation of Muhammad Iqbal, the foremost Muslim poet and philosopher, with reference to such larger questions as ideology, power, and discourse, as well as their complicity with the practice of (mis)translation. Providing an illuminating and incisive account of the cultural and linguistic distortions, the book shows how misrepresentations and mistranslations abound in Kiernan’s work. It invites the reader, especially scholars of the field, to pay close attention to the nuances and subtleties of translation, which, in a cumulative way, rewrite the original text in the process of translation. The politics of translation, in apparently innocuous ways, brings about and perpetuates the marginalization and exclusion of non-European works. Contrary to the common view, translation is deeply enmeshed in cross-cultural power struggles and mired in ideological dogmas and preconceptions. In the contemporary world where Islam and Muslims are increasingly portrayed as “cultural others”, the book comes as a timely rejoinder to the domesticated introductions of Iqbal in the West.

This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on approaches from the history of emotions, Eve Tignol investigates how they were collectively cultivated and debated for the shaping of Muslim community identity and for political mobilisation in north India in the wake of the Uprising of 1857 until the 1940s. Utilising a rich corpus of Urdu sources evoking the past, including newspapers, colonial records, pamphlets, novels, letters, essays and poetry, she explores the ways in which writing took on a particular significance for Muslim elites in North India during this period. Uncovering different episodes in the history of British India as vignettes, she highlights a multiplicity of emotional styles and of memory works, and their controversial nature. The book demonstrates the significance of grief as a proactive tool in creating solidarities and deepens our understanding of the dynamics behind collective action in colonial north India.
