Book excerpt: Designing Secure IoT devices with the Arm Platform Security Architecture and Cortex-M33 explains how to design and deploy secure IoT devices based on the Cortex-M23/M33 processor. The book is split into three parts. First, it introduces the Cortex-M33 and its architectural design and major processor peripherals. Second, it shows how to design secure software and secure communications to minimize the threat of both hardware and software hacking. And finally, it examines common IoT cloud systems and how to design and deploy a fleet of IoT devices. Example projects are provided for the Keil MDK-ARM and NXP LPCXpresso tool chains. Since their inception, microcontrollers have been designed as functional devices with a CPU, memory and peripherals that can be programmed to accomplish a huge range of tasks. With the growth of internet connected devices and the Internet of Things (IoT), “plain old microcontrollers are no longer suitable as they lack the features necessary to create both a secure and functional device. The recent development by ARM of the Cortex M23 and M33 architecture is intended for today’s IoT world. Shows how to design secure software and secure communications using the ARM Cortex M33-based microcontrollers Explains how to write secure code to minimize vulnerabilities using the CERT-C coding standard Uses the mbedTLS library to implement modern cryptography Introduces the TrustZone security peripheral PSA security model and Trusted Firmware Legal requirements and reaching device certification with PSA Certified

Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of IoT systems architecture includes in-depth treatment of all key components: edge, communications, cloud, data processing, security, management, and uses. Internet of Things: Concepts and System Design provides a reference and foundation for students and practitioners that they can build upon to design IoT systems and to understand how the specific parts they are working on fit into and interact with the rest of the system. This is especially important since IoT is a multidisciplinary area that requires diverse skills and knowledge including: sensors, embedded systems, real-time systems, control systems, communications, protocols, Internet, cloud computing, large-scale distributed processing and storage systems, AI and ML, (preferably) coupled with domain experience in the area where it is to be applied, such as building or manufacturing automation. Written in a reader-minded approach that starts by describing the problem (why should I care?), placing it in context (what does this do and where/how does it fit in the great scheme of things?) and then describing salient features of solutions (how does it work?), this book covers the existing body of knowledge and design practices, but also offers the author’s insights and articulation of common attributes and salient features of solutions such as IoT information modeling and platform characteristics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the late 1980s, information processing was associated with large mainframe computers and huge tape drives. During the 1990s, this trend shifted toward information processing with personal computers, or PCs. The trend toward miniaturization continues and in the future the majority of information processing systems will be small mobile computers, many of which will be embedded into larger products and interfaced to the physical environment. Hence, these kinds of systems are called embedded systems. Embedded systems together with their physical environment are called cyber-physical systems. Examples include systems such as transportation and fabrication equipment. It is expected that the total market volume of embedded systems will be significantly larger than that of traditional information processing systems such as PCs and mainframes. Embedded systems share a number of common characteristics. For example, they must be dependable, efficient, meet real-time constraints and require customized user interfaces (instead of generic keyboard and mouse interfaces). Therefore, it makes sense to consider common principles of embedded system design. Embedded System Design starts with an introduction into the area and a survey of specification models and languages for embedded and cyber-physical systems. It provides a brief overview of hardware devices used for such systems and presents the essentials of system software for embedded systems, like real-time operating systems. The book also discusses evaluation and validation techniques for embedded systems. Furthermore, the book presents an overview of techniques for mapping applications to execution platforms. Due to the importance of resource efficiency, the book also contains a selected set of optimization techniques for embedded systems, including special compilation techniques. The book closes with a brief survey on testing. Embedded System Design can be used as a text book for courses on embedded systems and as a source which provides pointers to relevant material in the area for PhD students and teachers. It assumes a basic knowledge of information processing hardware and software. Courseware related to this book is available at http://ls12-www.cs.tu-dortmund.de/~marwedel.

Book excerpt: The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging network superstructure that will connect physical resources and actual users. It will support an ecosystem of smart applications and services bringing hyper-connectivity to our society by using augmented and rich interfaces. Whereas in the beginning IoT referred to the advent of barcodes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which helped to automate inventory, tracking and basic identification, today IoT is characterized by a dynamic trend toward connecting smart sensors, objects, devices, data and applications. The next step will be “cognitive IoT,” facilitating object and data re-use across application domains and leveraging hyper-connectivity, interoperability solutions and semantically enriched information distribution. The Architectural Reference Model (ARM), presented in this book by the members of the IoT-A project team driving this harmonization effort, makes it possible to connect vertically closed systems, architectures and application areas so as to create open interoperable systems and integrated environments and platforms. It constitutes a foundation from which software companies can capitalize on the benefits of developing consumer-oriented platforms including hardware, software and services. The material is structured in two parts. Part A introduces the general concepts developed for and applied in the ARM. It is aimed at end users who want to use IoT technologies, managers interested in understanding the opportunities generated by these novel technologies, and system architects who are interested in an overview of the underlying basic models. It also includes several case studies to illustrate how the ARM has been used in real-life scenarios. Part B then addresses the topic at a more detailed technical level and is targeted at readers with a more scientific or technical background. It provides in-depth guidance on the ARM, including a detailed description of a process for generating concrete architectures, as well as reference manuals with guidelines on how to use the various models and perspectives presented to create a concrete architecture. Furthermore, best practices and tips on how system engineers can use the ARM to develop specific IoT architectures for dedicated IoT solutions are illustrated and exemplified in reverse mapping exercises of existing standards and platforms.

Book excerpt: In internet of things (IoT) applications, wireless connectivity is a key factor, particularly those that need to be in transition, or where wired communication is not effective or practicable. For top-notch connectivity of the Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) standard, the 900MHz frequency is generally used by most of the vendors. The radiation quality not only depends on the antenna geometry but on immediate surroundings. Additionally, the IoT product itself and the user of the product can strongly affect the resulting radiation pattern and other characteristics of the antenna. On the other hand, a suitable antenna should also have high efficiency and adequate bandwidth covering the desired frequency range. To take these effects into consideration, the whole IoT product must be included in the antenna simulations. Antenna Design for Narrowband IoT: Design, Analysis, and Applications provides the antenna design concept for narrowband internet of things applications, performs a detailed analysis of the antenna, and discusses the various antenna design concepts and structures. Covering a range of topics such as antenna design and antenna measurement systems, this book is ideal for industry professionals, research scholars, academicians, professors, and students.
