Book Synopsis Ionic Interactions in Natural and Synthetic Macromolecules by : Alberto Ciferri
Download or read book Ionic Interactions in Natural and Synthetic Macromolecules written by Alberto Ciferri and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of the subject of ionic interactions in macromolecules. The first parts of the book review and analyze the conventional treatments of fixed charges (e.g. in polyelectrolytes and polyampholytes), including screening and condensation by mobile ions. The interaction of ions with less polar sites on the macromolecule (e.g. amide bonds), and the origin of the lyotropic effects (focusing on binding versus condensation) will also be extensively addressed. The book also explores complex micellar organizations involving charged macromolecules (e.g. DNA) and low-molecular-weight ampholytes and strong protein associations. The resulting structures are relevant to a variety of functional biological systems and synthetic analogs. The contribution of electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction to the stability of proteins and other supramolecular structures will also be analyzed. There are chapters on applications such as deionization and cosmetic formulation. This 21-chapter book is divided into three sections: Fundamentals Mixed Interactions Functions and Applications
Book Synopsis Metal Ions in Biological Systems by : Helmut Sigel
Download or read book Metal Ions in Biological Systems written by Helmut Sigel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1985-07-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Ions in Biological Systems is devoted to increasing our understanding of the relationship between the chemistry of metals and life processes. The volumes reflect the interdisciplinary nature of bioinorganic chemistry and coordinate the efforts of researchers in the fields of biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, environmental chemistry, biophysics, pharmacy, and medicine. Volumes deal with such topics as the formation, stability, structure, and reactivity of biological compounds of low and high molecular weight containing metal ions; the metabolism and transport of metal ions and their complexes; and new models of complicated natural structures and processes. Volume 21 describes the underlying theories of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), promoting a wider use of NMR in studies of paramagnetic species. In six concise chapters by leading international authorities, Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to Paramagnetic Species outlines the most recent developments regarding the use of nuclear relaxation as a source for structural information ... examines studies of magnetically coupled metalloproteins and metal-porphyrin induced dipolar shifts for conformational analysis ... and evaluates the potential of paramagnetic ions as agents for enhancing NMR image contrast. With over 500 references that facilitate further research, Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to Paramagnetic Species is an essential resource for scientists and students in such disciplines as biophysics; bioinorganic, inorganic, and coordination chemistry; biochemistry; molecular biology; and enzymology. Book excerpt: As the First International Conference on Water and Ions in Biological Systems (Bucharest, June 25-27, 1980) was appreciated as a success, a second one was organized in the fall of the year 1982 under the sponsorship of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Romanian Biophysical Society (Union of Societies for Medical Sciences in the Socialist Republic of Romania) and in co operation with the International Union for Pure and Applied Bio physics (IUPAB). The responsibility for the scientific program and organization of the Second Conference on Water fell on an International Scientific Committee which included Prof. J. Tigyi (Pees), President of the UNESCO Expert Committee on Biophysics, Prof. K. Wuthrich, Secretary General of IUPAB and Prof. H. Eisenberg, (member of the IUPAB Council) under the guidance of an Executive Board whose members were Prof. J. Jaz (representative of UNESCO), Prof. B. Pullman (Vice President of IUPAB) and Prof. V. Vasilescu (President of the Romanian Biophysical Society). The Meeting was attended by more than 250 specialists including 150 Romanian participants and others from Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, England, the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, USSR, USA, Venezuela, Yugoslavia.
