Book excerpt: The impurity mode and [eta]{sub i} mode driven by impurity ions with outwardly peaked density profiles, just as it is at the boundary of tokamak plasmas, and the ion temperature gradient, respectively, are studied in high temperature toroidal plasmas. The gyrokinetic theory is applied and finite Larmor radius effects of both hydrogenic and impurity ions are included. It is found that the impurity mode is enhanced by the ion temperature gradient. In addition, the impurity ions with outwardly peaked density profiles are demonstrated to have destabilizing effects on the [eta]{sub i} mode. These two modes are strongly coupled to each other so that it is impossible to distinguish between them when both the driving mechanisms axe strong enough to drive the corresponding mode unstable independently. The correlation of the results with nonlinear simulations and the experimental observations are discussed.

Book excerpt: Experiments carried out with magnetically confined, high temperature plasmas have revealed important effects that have yet to be justified by existing theory. In particular, there arises an anomalous particle inflow in the central region of the plasma column. Experimental evidence suggests that this particle transport results from the excitation of unstable, short wavelength modes driven by the electron temperature gradient, but the validity of the existing theory is limited to the edge of the plasma column. This thesis investigates the question of how microscopic, electron temperature gradient driven, micro-reconnecting modes may collectively give rise to particle inflow in the central region of the plasma column by examining solutions to the mode dispersion relation. Derivations of micro-reconnecting modes in both fluid and kinetic theory are presented, and the resulting dispersion relation is analyzed.

These conditions have very interesting implications for pictures of anomalous thermal transport based on the presence of ion temperature gradient drift instabilities. The present paper includes a new derivation of the ion temperature gradient threshold for weak density gradient [eta]/sub i/ modes when ion transit resonances are taken into account; and the first derivation of threshold conditions for the onset of [eta]/sub i/-modes when [eta]/sub i/ is negative along with the properties of these negative [eta]/sub i/ instabilities when the thresholds are exceeded. Possible consequences for confinement in H-mode plasmas are discussed. 32 refs., 8 figs.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive program for the development and use of particle simulation techniques for solving the gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations on massively parallel computers has been carried out at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. This is a key element of our ongoing theoretical efforts to systematically investigate physics issues vital to understanding tokamak plasmas. In this paper, our focus is on spatial-gradient-driven microinstabilities. Their importance is supported by the recent progress in achieving a physics-based understanding of anomalous transport in toroidal systems which has been based on the proposition that these drift-type electrostatic modes dependent on ion temperature gradient (ITG) and trapped particle effects are dominant in the bulk (''confinement'') region. Although their presence is consistent with a number of significant confinement trends, results from high temperature tokamaks such as TFTR have highlighted the need for better insight into the nonlinear properties of such instabilities in long-mean-free-path plasmas. In addressing this general issue, we report important new results including (i) the first fully toroidal 3D gyrokinetic simulation of ITG modes and (ii) realistic toroidal eigenmode calculations demonstrating the unique capability to deal with large scale kinetic behavior extending over many rational surfaces. The effects of ITG modes (iii) on the inward pinch of impurities in 3D slab geometry and (iv) on the existence of microtearing modes in 2D slab are also discussed. Finally, (v) sheared toroidal flow effects on trapped-particle modes are presented.
