Book excerpt: Several beam-solid interaction techniques have been developed that can either stand alone or be used in connection with others for materials processing, for fabrication of devices with enhanced electro-optical and mechanical properties, and with enhanced resistance to corrosion and erosion. For example, advances in focused ion beams (FIB) have brought out-of-reach ideas and applications to fruition. This book from MRS focuses on the developments in ion-beam-assisted processing of materials and reviews successful applications of the techniques. Topics include: fundamentals of ion-solid interactions; ion-beam mixing; radiation damage; insulators and wide bandgap materials; polymers; optical materials; plasma and ion-assisted techniques; metals and tribology; focused ion beams; fundamental semiconductor processing and compound semiconductors.

Book excerpt: Despite the vast knowledge accumulated on silicon, germanium, and their alloys, these materials still demand research, eminently in view of the improvement of knowledge on silicon–germanium alloys and the potentialities of silicon as a substrate for high-efficiency solar cells and for compound semiconductors and the ongoing development of nanodevices based on nanowires and nanodots. Silicon, Germanium, and Their Alloys: Growth, Defects, Impurities, and Nanocrystals covers the entire spectrum of R&D activities in silicon, germanium, and their alloys, presenting the latest achievements in the field of crystal growth, point defects, extended defects, and impurities of silicon and germanium nanocrystals. World-recognized experts are the authors of the book’s chapters, which span bulk, thin film, and nanostructured materials growth and characterization problems, theoretical modeling, crystal defects, diffusion, and issues of key applicative value, including chemical etching as a defect delineation technique, the spectroscopic analysis of impurities, and the use of devices as tools for the measurement of materials quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the behavior of two candidate materials (a-SiO2 and MgO) for applications in fusion (e.g., the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ITER) and Generation IV fission reactors. Both parts of the thesis – the development of the ionoluminescence technique and the study of the ion-irradiation effects on both materials – are highly relevant for the fields of the ion-beam analysis techniques and irradiation damage in materials. The research presented determines the microstructural changes at different length scales in these materials under ion irradiation. In particular, it studies the effect of the irradiation temperature using several advanced characterization techniques. It also provides much-needed insights into the use of these materials at elevated temperatures. Further, it discusses the development of the ion-beam-induced luminescence technique in different research facilities around the globe, a powerful in situ spectroscopic characterization method that until now was little known. Thanks to its relevance, rigorosity and quality, this thesis has received twoprestigious awards in Spain and France.

Book excerpt: The fabrication of Si- and compound semiconductor-based devices involves a number of steps ranging from material growth to pattern definition by lithography, and ultimately, pattern transfer by etching/deposition. The key to device manufacturing, however, is reproducibility, low cost and high yield. Diagnostic techniques allow correlation between processing and actual device performance to be established. Researchers from universities, industry and government come together in this book to examine the advances in diagnostic techniques that provide critical information on structural, optical and electrical properties of semiconductor devices, as well as monitoring techniques for equipment/processes for control and feedback. The overriding goal is for rapid, accurate materials characterization, both in situ and ex situ. Topics include: in situ diagnostics; proximal probe microscopies; optical probes of devices and device properties; spectroscopic ellipsometry/structural diagnostics; and material analysis - X-ray techniques, strain measurements and passivation.

Book excerpt: Electron microscopy techniques are among the most powerful methods for characterization of materials, with the ability to reveal both the atomic-scale structure and composition. This information may be used to elucidate macroscopic properties or to optimize materials synthesis and processing. Instrumentation and techniques for dynamic in situ experiments are undergoing rapid development and have recently been applied to a wide range of problems. This book focuses on time-resolved electron microscopy (including diffraction and spectroscopy), as well as novel instrumentation for temperature and pressure control. In addition to discussing the application of electron microscopy techniques to the in situ study of the kinetics, thermodynamics and mechanisms of reaction, the book also explores their utility as efficient methods of optimizing processing conditions. Imaging techniques featured include: scanning tunneling microscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, dark field transmission and reflection electron microscopy, Lorentz microscopy, electron holography, scanning and low-energy electron microscopy and photoemission electron microscopy

Lasers provide a controlled source of atomic and electronic excitations involving nonequilibrium phenomena that lend themselves to processing of novel materials and structures. The range of laser-solid interactions involving electronic excitation, melting and evaporation result in the formation of novel phases, selective gas excitations, surface modification and low-temperature thin-film deposition. This book from MRS focuses on the use of lasers in both the fundamental understanding and applied aspects of laser-solid and laser-gas interactions relevant to materials processing. Applications featured include thin-film transistors formed by laser-induced crystallization of amorphous silicon, diamond coatings and micromachining. Topics include: fundamentals of laser-solid interactions; fundamentals of pulsed laser ablation; pulsed laser deposition; novel applications of laser processing; laser-driven formation of nanocrystals; laser annealing; surface modification and etching; and laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition.
