Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical Chemistry, Volume 38: Ion Exchange in Analytical Chemistry provides a broad survey of the important role that ion exchange can and should play in chemical analysis. This book focuses on the plate-equilibrium theory of chromatography, which is less difficult theoretically than the mass-transfer theory. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the earliest recorded application of ion exchange. This text then examines how high temperature affects ion-exchange resins. Other chapters consider the exchange of ions between a solid ion-exchanging material and a solution, which is a typically reversible reaction. This book describes as well the relatively simple separations and other applications of ion exchange to analytical chemistry. The final chapter deals with the interesting nature of the metal complexes formed within the exchanger and describe the use of ion-exchange distribution studies to determine the stability and nature of complexes existing in the solution. This book is a valuable resource for analytical chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bewitched is an odd word with which to begin a chemical textbook. Yet that is a fair description of how I reacted on first leaming of ion exchange and imagining what might be done with it. That initial fascination has not left me these many years later, and it has provided much ofthe motivation for writing this book. The perceived need for a text on the fundamentals of ion chromatography provided the rest. Many readers will have a general idea of what ion chromatography is and what it does. Briefly, for those who do not, it is an umbrella term for a variety of chromatographie methods for the rapid and sensitive analysis of mixtures of ionic species. It has become highly developed in the last decade, and while it is now routinely used for the determination of organic as weH as inorganic ions, its initial impact was greatest in the area of inorganic analysis. In the past the determination of inorganic ions, particularly anions, meant laborious, time-con suming, and often not very sensitive "wet chemieal" methods. In the last ten years that has changed radically as ion chromatography has supplanted these older methods.

This work places major emphasis on modern high-resolution chromatography, and also includes the analysis of proteins and biological macromolecules. The easy-to-read text gives a general account of ion exchangers, their properties and how they are made, as well as a brief account of the physical chemistry of classical microporous ion-exchanging polymers. Organized by methods and techniques, this one-of-a-kind book describes each technique using illustrations by representative applications. This interesting review also compares ion-exchange methods with other methods of accomplishing the same analyses. It addresses many new areas in this field, including such exciting topics as pulsed amperometric detection of carbohydrates, amino acids, and peptides; chromatography of carbohydrates by anion exchange; and methods of polymer synthesis. Everyone who has an interest in analytical chemistry, chromatography, reactive polymers, and chromatographic science will want to add this reference to their collection of up-to-date resources.

Book excerpt: Ion-selective electrodes continue to be one of the more excIting developments in electro analytical chemistry in the last 10 years. This is evidenced in the large and continually growing literature in the field. It is important and necessary in such a rapidly growing area to be able to "take stock," i. e. , to present a well-rounded, up-to-date review of important developments. In this volume, reviews by many of the leading practitioners and pioneers in this field contribute to what we consider to be a generous coverage of both fundamental aspects of ion-selective electrodes and their applications to analytical chemistry. Although this volume is not intended to be exhaustive, we have attempted to produce a "stand alone" text dealing with all major current developments. Indeed, since some of the theoretical approaches are not yet universally agreed on, each of the first five chapters deals with theory and principles of the nature and behavior of ion-selective electrodes from the vantage point of the authors' own experience and understanding. In view of the rapid expansion of this field, plans for future volumes are now being formulated. Henry Freiser Tucson, Arizona vii Contents Chapter 1 Theory and Principles of Membrane Electrodes R.
